5.0 out of 5 stars Great investment for achieving a Grade 7/8/9
This revision guide is among some of the best revision guides out there for GCSE English Literature. If you are looking for a revision guide under £5 that could (if thoroughly studied) help you achieve a grade 7+, this is the one to buy.*PROS*-- Includes summary of the plot of the entire play (By Act and by Scene). This includes: Act 1 scenes 1-4, Act 1 scenes 5-7, Act 2 scenes 1-2, Act 2 scenes 3-4, Act 3 scenes 1-3, Act 3 scenes 4-6, Act 4 and Act 5. This helps a lot with condensing down the long play and filtering out the most significant events.-- Contains relevant context and background information about settings in the play. This includes 11th Century Scotland, James the 1st and Renaissance England, Tragedies and Stagecraft. This is an important feature as one of the AO's that are assessed within the exam, is context of the time the play was written and being able to relate that to the events in the play. This is joined with the places, events and attitudes within the time which help display a further understanding.-- Character profiles: This includes Macbeth (and his development), Lady Macbeth (and her development), Banquo, Macduff, The Witches, King Duncan and Malcom. This is very helpful as the students sitting the exam need to understand who the main characters are, how they are presented and how they change throughout the play.-- Themes: A major component of the exam is to do with themes. These include Power and Corruption, Religion and the Supernatural, Temptation and Manipulation, Duty and Betrayal, Guilt and Madness, Secrets and Lies. These ideas are explored and show the authors intentions as well as how they are put forward to the audience.-- Exam Tips: Provides some guidance on exam related problems some students may encounter and how to tackle them such as Tips and Assessment Objectives (AO's), Possible Character questions (and planning a response), Possible Theme questions (and planning a response) as well as Grade 5 and 7+ response examples to these questions to give you a perspective example of how responses are analysed.-- Highlights: There are special bubbles which have Summaries (of all important points covered within a topic), Sample Analysis (the kinds of analysis an examiner would be looking for), Quick Tests (just mini-tests to check if the student can remember all the main points from a topic), Exam practice (short writing tasks so that students can apply what they've learnt in a topic), a Glossary (a list of words with easy-to-understand definitions that students will likely come across when revising the play) and Answers. In terms of Cons, honestly there really isn't any major things that stand out, but if I had to be picky...*CONS*-- Doesn't include in depth analysis on Form, structure and language.-- Not enough exam style questions and in-depth answers to go with them.Overall, it's a solid book. Maybe accompanied with some past paper exam question practice and Mr Bruff Video's (on YouTube) would be a solid loadout to getting to a grade 7 or above.
