5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping read
Normally, I don’t read this genre, but it kept popping up on my fb so thought I would give it a try. Very happy that I did! Absolutely gripping! I honestly didn’t want it to end, and hoping the story can continue in a future book? The history is fascinating and I understand why the author was so intrigued with Alison’s story. Will definitely read more from this author.
4.0 out of 5 stars Authentic and atmospheric
The Book of Witching is another well-plotted dual timeline story from C.J. Cooke. In the current day in Glasgow, Clem's daughter Erin is found badly burned on a beach on Orkney. When Erin comes round she doesn’t always seem to be herself, personality changes coming and going as her recovery begins. In the other strand of the story, Alison Balfour is imprisoned, awaiting trial for witchcraft at a time when women were pursued, tortured and killed if they were believed to be witches. Linking both timelines is the Book of Witching, a mysterious and magical book. This book is gripping, alarming and moving. The plight and treatment of women like Alison, those who could heal and use concoctions and spells to do so, is well-documented and yet never fails to shock. I was appalled at the tactics used by cruel and powerful men to ensure a confession to witchcraft and I read with a hand over my mouth at times. The current day storyline is interwoven with Alison's narrative really well, as the reasons for Erin being on Orkney and why she has ended up in hospital gradually become clear. The author has clearly done a lot of research to make this story authentic. The settings were full of atmosphere and the characters jumped off the page, particularly Alison and her family. I was fascinated by the Book of Witching and the author's notes on where her inspiration had come from. I loved the clever ending too, which brought the story full circle. An excellent read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely AMAZING! Highly recommended!
The Book of the Witching is a captivating mix of historical and modern thrillers, with a hint of the supernatural. The narrative alternates between two timelines: the 16th century and the present. In the 16th century, Alison, a spaewife, is wrongly accused of using witchcraft to poison the Earl of Orkney. She undergoes horrific torture at the hands of the King's chamberlain, Father Colville, and is forced to confess to a crime she didn’t commit. In the present day, Erin has become involved with a cult fascinated by Orkney’s dark history and the lingering traces of magic. As she delves deeper into the cult’s twisted beliefs, eerie connections between her life and Alison’s begin to emerge, blurring the boundary between past and present. When Erin and her friends embark on what’s meant to be a hiking trip to explore her Orkney heritage, it ends in a devastating fire. This fire sets off a series of events that ties the two timelines together, uncovering long-hidden secrets.I cannot recommend this book highly enough, I finished it in just two days. I found the fact that the story is based on true events particularly fascinating. If you’re after a witchy read this spooky season, The Book of the Witching is a must-read. It's definitely one of my favourite books this year!
5.0 out of 5 stars So chilling and captivating! 5 stars read!
Fast-paced, captivating, enraging, it will surely keep you reading deep into the night. The story is split between the terrifying past in 1594 when Alison is unfairly accused of witchcraft and the mind-boggling present in 2024 when Erin is a victim of a burning accident while on a trip with friends. The chapters about the past are incredibly rage-inducing and the present is as horrifying as it is confusing… you cannot put the book down at all because these women’s stories are so addictive. One thing that ties both stories is The Book of Witching, a book made of darkness and fears. When I started this book I did not know it was inspired by real people and I enjoyed it very much as a piece of fiction, but finding out its origin brought a deeper meaning to the whole story.I recommend this book to anyone who likes books about historical witchcraft, thrillers, and stories about women.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great historical fiction with a hint of spookiness
This book ticks all the boxes for me. It is based on a real historical story although names and locations have been fictionalised. It is a little bit spooky, it involves cults and the supernatural. I loved this book, it alternates between Orkney in 1594 with the story of Alison Balfour being accused of witchcraft and the present, Glasgow in 2024 with the story of Clem who has a daughter in hospital with major burns after a fire on the Orkney isle of Gunn. These stories are interconnected through time via The Book of Witching. They both have visions of each other via the book and Nyx is the link.I learned so much about the Scottish Witch Trials and history through this book. It had me hooked throughout. I loved the characters and the descriptions of historical Orkney. This is the first book that I have read by C.J. Cooke but I will definitely seek out others as I love historical fiction. I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical stories, books about witches and the supernatural or even just general fiction. It is a gripping read and quite fast paced.
Perfect fall read! 5 stars
Historical suspense, but make it witchy! I loved everything about this read. To start off with, the author did an amazing amount of research for this book (which earns huge points from me). I was so much more intrigued & invested to know that the story of Alison Balfour is, in fact, based on a woman with the nearly the same name (factually spelled “Alyson”). Alyson was tried, convicted, and executed as a witch in 1594.There are dual timelines in this novel, both of which are dripping with suspense. One follows the historical story of Alison Balfour, while the other follows a modern-day woman named Clem whose daughter is discovered nearly dead under mysterious circumstances. When Clem’s daughter awakens from a coma, she insists she is someone named “Nyx,” and the question arises surrounding whether the tragic event was an accident or the result of something more nefarious. In books with dual timelines, I often find myself a lot more invested in one timeline over the other. That was not remotely the case in this novel! I needed to know what happens in both stories, which made this utterly unputdownable. The timelines are also excellently written, so I was never confused as to what was happening and in which plot line. The blend of mystery/suspense, historical fiction, and witchy themes makes this book addictive for a large variety of readers, and its release is perfectly timed for the beginning of fall. An easy 5 stars from me!Big thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for the gifted ARC!
Couldn't put it down
I love every book this author writes and this was no exception. It is a perfect read for October. Witches, magic, a mysterious book, they're all in this story, and it is also a story about mothers and children and love.
