'If you venture into those woods you’re still sure of a big surprise’ The Times

Some said it was tragic, what happened to the Van Laars.

Some said the family deserved it. That they never even thanked the searchers who stayed out for five nights in the freezing forest trying to help find their missing son.

Some said there was a reason it took the family so long to call for help. That they knew what happened to the boy.

Now, fifteen years later, the Van Laars' teenage daughter has gone missing in the same wilderness as her brother. Some say the two disappearances aren’t connected.

Some say they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling

Wonderful characters and with a perfectly described setting, you can get lost in the story - two timelines, two mysteries, perfectly paced with both sadness and hope. Read it, it’s worth your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tension-building

W. · 1 September 2024

To a degree this is slow burning, and there’s nothing groundbreaking or world-shattering - but it is a goooood read and there’s not many of those around frankly. But immediate intrigue (caused by small exposures of the different characters and events, piece by piece and swinging between past & present) genuinely cranked up the tension at a tantalising and satisfying pace.I wasn’t convinced I’d enjoy this but in the end I wanted it to both draw-out the suspense as long as possible and also satisfy my need to know immediately! The character building and era vibe/tone is written excellently - portrayed precisely and incredibly detailed without deviating your attention - not even the lowliest of characters was forgettable. This is the first book I’ve read from this author but now I’m dying to explore the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Families and Time

T.L. · 2 September 2024

This was a perfect read while in the mountains of Montenegro. It gripped me from the first page to the last. I liked its use of time and the different portraits of highly dysfunctional families. It brought back memories of my own time at camp in Pennsylvania, while the twists and turns of the plot kept me turning the pages. The parallel and sequence plots twist and turn throughout while the ending was both unexpected and comforting at the same time. Just what I needed on holiday and highly recommended.

Not sure this book ‘wowed’ me. I enjoyed the build up to the ending but the ending left me underwhelmed. Good summer read though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Long read

Good book but very Long

5.0 out of 5 stars great wilderness read

d. · 21 September 2024

Loved the portrayal of the outdoor life in the Adirondack Mountains in a camp for children attached to the Van Laars large isolated mansion which they use in the summer. Being a keen hillwalker in the UK and used to enjoying walking in remote areas I felt that I really got an understanding of life there and enjoyed learning about nature in this area.Basically this a story of a missing girl Barbara van Laar in 1975 and the search for her which starts to overlap with the disappearance of her brother over a decade before.I liked the focus on the Judy the young Investigator who has recently transferred from being a state trooper and is trying to be accepted in a very male dominated work force and be taken seriously by the wealthy people that she is investigating.A lot of the characters have a deprived background of poverty and emotional neglect which really contrasts with the extreme wealth and privilege of the Van Laars of which they are very protective. The plot is told from different timelines and different perspectives and is very well constructed. The very end of the book is a good way to finish the tale and left me wishfully thinking of life in simpler times. This is the first Liz Moore book that I have read and definitely want to read more. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant read

Truly a great book. Couldn't recommend it more.

A really good read!

D.L. · 6 August 2024

Interesting and engaging plot; moves right along.

long and involved

K.F. · 28 September 2024

In the end it resolves into a good storyline. But bogs down in detail in the middle, I wasn’t sure I could stick with it, it turns out the detail all matters but I wonder if it could have been presented without the reader being left feeling a little exhausted by the back and forth in time.

Decent Summer Read

S.u.N. · 13 September 2024

The plot is not that interesting, but it's a decent thriller to read in summer.

THE book of the summer

C.B.C. · 8 October 2024

This book has been touted as THE book of the summer, and honestly? It lives up to the hype. An easy five stars.Set at a stunning lake estate and summer camp in the Adirondacks, the atmosphere is perfect for an immersive mystery. The setting alone is rich with potential, but Liz Moore’s writing takes full advantage, pulling you in with every turn. What makes God of the Woods stand out is the layers. It’s a slow-burn mystery where the plot unravels bit by bit, but somehow the pacing still feels fast. There are multiple characters, multiple scenarios, and plenty of suspects to keep you on your toes. I couldn’t guess where it was going—always a win in my book. This is no run-of-the-mill whodunit; it’s a literary mystery that’s smart, well-written, and full of surprises. If you’re into a good brain workout with a side of suspense, this one’s a must-read.
