'A memoir to stand alongside the classics . . . compelling and joyous' Sunday Times

Tara Westover grew up preparing for the end of the world. She was never put in school, never taken to the doctor. She did not even have a birth certificate until she was nine years old.

At sixteen, to escape her father's radicalism and a violent older brother, Tara left home. What followed was a struggle for self-invention, a journey that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one's life through new eyes, and the will to change it.

'It will make your heart soar' Guardian
'Jaw-dropping and inspiring, everyone should read this book' Stylist
'Absolutely superb . . . so gripping I could hardly breathe' Sophie Hannah

Review

A memoir to stand alongside classics by the likes of Jeanette Winterson and Lorna Sage . . . a compelling and ultimately joyous account of self-determination ― Sunday Times[A] fascinating, jaw-dropping memoir -- Nina Stibbe ― Observer

[A] superb memoir… Westover’s journey from a remote corner of the American west to one of the world’s grandest seats of learning is extraordinary . . . Her story, of fighting to be herself, is as old as the hills she came from, but Westover gives us such a fresh, absorbing take that it deserves to bring her own private Idaho into the bestseller lists, book groups and, eventually, cinemas. ―
The TimesHeartbreaking in its honesty...[an] intelligent and powerful memoir ― Literary Review

An amazing story, and truly inspiring. The kind of book everyone will enjoy. IT’S EVEN BETTER THAN YOU’VE HEARD.

-- Bill GatesBrilliantly recounts her journey towards knowledge and enlightenment -- Blake Morrison ― Guardian

Her story is remarkable, as each extreme anecdote described in tidy prose attests. That someone who grew up in her circumstances could achieve as much as she has is astonishing . . . The central tension she wrestles with throughout her book is how to be true to herself without alienating her family. Her upbringing was extraordinary, but that struggle is not. ―
The EconomistThis memoir [is] one of the wisest accounts of family love and betrayal that I’ve read ― Mail on Sunday[An] astonishing autobiography -- Antony Beevor

An astonishing and uplifting story about the transformative power of education ―
Mail on Sunday, 2018 Cultural HighlightsEducated is quite simply one of the best books I have ever read. What a writer, what a thinker and what a gift for the rest of us to be able to read her story. Unbelievably moving and profoundly thought-provoking. -- Elizabeth Day

Educated is an unflinching account of love and brutality, of the strength of blood ties and the power of imagination, and of a young woman whose intellect, self-knowledge and courage illuminate every page. There are passages so painfully vivid that they sear themselves into the memory, yet Westover is never prurient or punitive: even when writing from the depths, she does so with compassion and grace. Both the book and its writer are remarkable in every respect -- Sarah Perry, bestselling author of THE ESSEX SERPENTWestover has a story to tell that shouldn't be ignored ― The Guardian

This fiercely intelligent memoir is a fascinating and compassionate view of another world and the author’s struggle to both escape from and understand it as she heads out into the world ―
The Pool, Ones to Watch in 2018A shocking and powerfully moving memoir ― Daily Express

What comes through is Tara’s grit, determination and instinctive sense that somewhere within education lies her redemption ... There is pain and adversity in this heart-wrenching memoir but ultimately what Tara leaves us with is hope ―
Sunday ExpressMarvellous. There is no feeling like discovering a young writer who is springing up fully armed with so much talent -- Stephen Fry

Tara Westover's beautifully written memoir shines a light on a part of our country that we too often overlook. Her powerful tale―of trying to find a place for herself in the world, without losing her connection to her family or her beloved home―deserves to be widely read. My Mamaw would have been rooting for Tara. -- J.D. Vance, author of Hillbilly ElegyAbsolutely superb . . . the last 100 pages were so gripping I could hardly breathe -- Sophie Hannah

Educated, in showing us the unstoppable power of a young woman determined to make her own decisions and find her own way, is an inspiring and important tale for our times. I am still cheering her on -- Rebecca Stott, award winning author of THE DAYS OF RAIN

This was one of those books that had to sit and rest for a few days until I was ready to write a few words about it. It caused quite a turmoil inside me because of its powerful and courageous underlying message. There is no doubt that the author is an extremely intelligent and resilient person and that she risked her overall health in order to carve herself a life of her own, free of guilt and remorse. It's a stunning and often times harrowing account about what it takes to be truly authentic, how difficult it is to escape the spiral of abuse, both physical and emotional. At the end of the story, I realized that we need more awareness, more eyes and ears in our communities to actually detect and spot these underhanded abuses going on. This is not only valid for a community that is cut off from the mainstream society like the one described in the book, but it can be applied in any situation or circumstance. For that to happen, we need knowledge. Education plays a big role in spreading this awareness. We need the freedom to question, whether it is our parents' opinions or their behaviour, the allowance to question the very idea of a family and not see it as an untouchable taboo, and we need to address the false concepts of liberalism whether it is allowing belief systems or world views to run freely without boundaries nor any fundamental checks. The right to a basic education is a basic human right and can prevent people from being brainwashed. We need to develop better ways and measures to help, support and protect the victims and help validate their painful memories. The author had to leave home, leave a restrictive way of living in order to find an open and secure place where she was allowed to thrive mentally and emotionally and tell her story. There is no pill, nor fake misguided belief that can alleviate the pain of an abuse victim. Predators exist everywhere and sometimes the wounded bleed invisibly and never get to find their voice. I applaud the author for speaking up and for not sugar coating any aspect of her life nor the disturbing sense of betrayal by family members.“You can love someone and still choose to say goodbye to them,” she says now. “You can miss a person every day, and still be glad that they are no longer in your life.” These two quotes sum up perfectly what it takes to chose self-worth and independence over pretense and denial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life turning to the world rather than away from it

I'd had this book sitting on my shelf for a while - it had been recommended in many articles so I had high expectations. The book was first published in 2018, it has 377 pages and 40 chapters. First impression is good as there are some top quality quotes of praise at the start.I hadn't appreciated that so much of the book would be about the author's childhood. Her education at home was very limited and she describes the varying levels of work she had to do to survive. The writing is engaging and the reader is encouraged to care about Tara. The narrative is first person so is very personal - you can't help but feel her experiences with her.Alongside the straightforward narrative. the reader has to look behind the writing as the motives and emotions are a huge part of this story. Tara rarely judges and simply accepts most of her life - it's the reader who is given the space to analyse and has time to stand back to get the full picture.Tara's life is hard to comprehend - she tells us about it sensitivity yet managing to retain a disconnect that appears to be her coping mechanism. She thought that everything was normal and that there were no options. Its inspiring to read about her small moments of realisation when she starts to acknowledge what is happening, accepts them as wrong and starts to consider alternatives. I was surprised there wasn't one big moment of rebellion away from her world but just small movements and tiny mind shifts until one day she found she had gone far enough mentally not to have to go back. This multitude of tiny steps are almost imperceptible until she learns to believe in herself - this creates a wave of emotion for the reader and it can be seen how life changing the process was for Tara.Brilliant account of a life turning towards the world rather than running away from it.This is all well written as a retrospective account and it is as I would normally expect a memoir to be - evenly paced and with a consistent tone. This book seems to do so much more though - at the start the narrative is naïve and basic, as the author grows the phrasing becomes more confident and articulate. This development is cleverly written.

A beautiful, loyal soul born in to a family with a paranoid father who reigns over them with the strength and faith of a higher power. His hatred for society's rule makers is overwhelming; coupled with his unwavering belief in Mormonism, creates a perfect storm for the innocent caught in the cross fire! With beautifully written descriptions of her treacherous journey from a brainwashed child at risk mentally and physically to her true destiny. A truly fascinating read!

Probably the best book I’ve read all year. Hits you hard in the gut sometimes, but also very wonderful. Gave me a new perspective on many things which I’m very grateful for. Impossible to describe, just a high high recommendation from Norway

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly amazing story, if it was fiction or a film, you would say it was unbelievable.

An incredible life story of a young girl brought up in poverty by very strict Mormon parents. Abused physically by her brother, unprotected by her Mother and forced to work in the dangerous environment of her father's scrapyard. Little or no schooling yet Tara overcomes a world that is against her and goes far. I cannot recommend this book enough . When I first started reading it I thought it was a novel and was totally shocked when I realised it was a true story.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating read

Sensível e forte

R. · 20 February 2024

A must read

L.F. · 21 January 2024

As a teacher , this is a must read to try to understand there are so many parts of our students lives we know nothing about. Tara survived what not many of us could. God bless you.

Traumatic truths

K.C. · 2 September 2024

Written with clarity you feel so strongly for Tara. If only she could have escaped sooner. It must have been painstaking to unpick the traumas she endured to be able to live a something near-normal life. And to become a professor through all that adversity in her life and lack of schooling is truly remarkable. Chapeaux I believe is the way to congratulate the author. Thank you for sharing your life story with me.
