About this item:

Puffin Classics: the definitive collection of timeless stories, for every child.

On foggy mornings, Charlotte's web was truly a thing of beauty . Even Lurvy, who wasn't particularly interested in beauty, noticed the web when he came with the pig's breakfast. And then he took another look and he saw something that made him set his pail down. There, in the centre of the web, neatly woven in block letters, was a message. It said: SOME PIG!

This is the story of a little girl named Fern, who loves a little pig named Wilbur - and of Wilbur's dear friend, Charlotte, a beautiful large grey spider. When Fern's uncle decrees that Wilbur must become bacon, Fern, Charlotte, Templeton the rat and all Wilbur's farmyard friends come up with an ingenious plan to fool the humans, and save their very special pig.

Joyful, funny, and deeply moving,
Charlotte's Web is a story about the power of friendship, and celebrating what makes everyone special. It is rightly heralded as one of the greatest children's books ever written.

"E. B. White's writing is perfect... And Garth William's muted illustrations are entirely without fault. Whether read aloud or solo, this is a book well deserving of its 'classic' status." - The Children's Book Review

Review

An unusual and witty story which provides a gentle introduction to questions of mortality, Charlotte's Web is a modern classic. ― BookTrust

From grammar to the tenderness in which this story is delivered, E. B. White's writing is so perfect... And Garth William's muted illustrations are entirely without fault. Whether read aloud or solo, this is a book well deserving of it's 'classic' status. ―
The Children's Book Review

An extraordinary story, exquisitely written, with unforgettable passages of dialogue and description, that confronts the dilemma of our relationship with farm animals. Witty, and in places, desperately sad this is a book where animals talk yet remain who they are, themselves. A book to make you cry. -- Michael Morpurgo ― Lovereading4kids

I thought this to read to my little boy (aged 6). I haven’t read this since I was little and I loved reading it again. My little boy loved the story too. He also enjoyed answering the quiz questions at the back of the book. It’s such lovely story about friendship and I think it’s still a great story for kids today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Selfishness is... good?

C. · 11 August 2020

There are hundreds of reviews to read through, so I do not want or need to cover trampled ground. What I will say is that although I loved this story as a child, as an adult I don't find it to have the same charm. My issue lies with Wilbur. Throughout the text, he is primarily a selfish creature. On the surface, he doesn't seem to always be selfish: he does give compliments to Charlotte from time to time, and he does ultimately lead to the saving of Charlotte's egg sac. However, think about his motives. He clearly saves Charlotte's eggs not only out of love for Charlotte, but more as a means of having a new generation of friends once Charlotte is gone; this is evidenced by his negative reaction to Charlotte's children leaving once they have hatched. Anytime he interacts with Templeton, the supposedly self-centered character, it is because he, Wilbur, wants Templeton to satisfy some need of Wilbur's. Wilbur is a nag constantly demanding Charlotte tell stories, sing songs, save him, etc. In the end, through his selfishness, he survives and continues to have friends, even if not on the same level as the rather one-way friendship he had with Charlotte. So finally, is the point that he who is selfish ultimately gets what he wants? It seems so. And how many of us know people that are selfish and at the end of the day do get what they want? It is rather unpleasant, but this seems to be a reality of the world which E.B. White has captured and encapsulated in our rather ungreat protagonist, Wilbur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally selfless spider

A.C. · 25 February 2024

My 9 year old loved this book and I found it very sad. It’s about a totally selfless spider who gives her all to help a pig…. Helps him with every fibre of her being right up until her dying breath even though she knows she doesn’t have long left. But it’s not all gloom.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story

J.M. · 6 January 2012

Charlotte's Web is a wonderful story; but I should argue that having read it as a child and again as an adult, it is not simply for children. The friendship between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider is something rare and special. This is a story which will probably make you laugh and cry for a variety of reasons; but most of all, it will make you remember that life is not a bed of roses and that we succeed or fail in life as a result of how much we are willing to give to and receive from our friends. As a story it rolls along with a good pace and the illustrations are a delight to complement the text. The characters - both human and non-human provide a rich tapestry against which the fate of Wilbur the pig is played out. His special friends, Fern (a young girl who initially saves Wilbur) and Charlotte the spider are faced with many challenges along the way. This is story that has a mix of tension regarding the fate of Wilbur and a wide range of emotions and behavour expressed by the characters, ranging from selfishness to deep love that all seem very real. It is a great story for children, particularly since it blends a magical quality in the animals' ability to speak, but at the same time, it maintains a reality about the nature of life that is too often removed in other works, where the reader is sheltered from the realities of life.It is not surprising that this book is considered to be a gem by so many people.

Good for Reading Class
