The Oxford Companion to English Literature 7/e (Oxford Companions)

Description:

About this item:

The Oxford Companion to English Literature has long been established as the leading reference resource for students, teachers, scholars, and general readers of English literature. It provides unrivalled coverage of all aspects of English literature - from writers, their works, and the historical and cultural context in which they wrote, to critics, literary theory, and allusions.

For the seventh edition, the
Companion has been thoroughly revised and updated to meet the needs and concerns of today's students and general readers. Over 1,000 new entries have been added, ranging from new writers - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Patrick Marber, David Mitchell, Arundhati Roy - to increased coverage of writers and literary movements from around the world. Coverage of American literature has been substantially increased, with new entries on writers such as Cormac McCarthy and Amy Tan and on movements and publications.

Contextual and historical coverage has also been expanded, with new entries on European history and culture, post-colonial literature, as well as writers and literary movements from around the world that have influenced English literature.

The
Companion has always been a quick and dependable source of reference for students, and the new edition confirms its pre-eminent role as the go-to resource of first choice. All entries have been reviewed, and details of new works, biographies, and criticism have been brought right up to date. So also has coverage of the themes, approaches and concepts encountered by students today, from terms to articles on literary theory and theorists. There is increased coverage of writers from around the world, as well as from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and of contextual topics, including film and television, music, and art. Cross-referencing has been thoroughly updated, with stronger linking from writers to thematic and conceptual entries.

Meanwhile coverage of popular genres such as children's literature, science fiction, biography, reportage, crime fiction, fantasy or travel literature has been increased substantially, with new entries on writers from Philip Pullman to Anne Frank and from Anais Nin to Douglas Adams.

The seventh edition of this classic
Companion - now under the editorship of Dinah Birch, assisted by a team of 28 distinguished associate editors, and over 150 contributors - ensures that it retains its status as the most authoritative, informative, and accessible guide to literature available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding

Firstly, my review may be biased as I love the Oxford Companion series and have well thumbed hard copies of both the English Literature and English Language volumes. I've just bought the ereader Literature version for an astonishing £4.55. It's probably going to be one of my best under a fiver investments ever! This is bang up to date, with entries reflecting new authors and American literature. There are also sections on Black British authors, Children's Literature, Literary Prizes and prize winners as well as a full A to Z. All in all, an outstanding reference resource and great to while away the day just browsing. The hyperlinks make it almost as user friendly as a hard copy, but the convenience of having this tucked away on the kindle to dip into at any time is just amazing. I can't recommend this highly enough to anyone with a remote interest in reading and literature.

I've had a previous version of this excellent book for quite some time and have always found it most useful in all sorts of ways. I've now bought the latest edition for my grand-daughter who is presently studying an open university degree course and I am sure that she will find it useful too.

It is more than twenty years since I bought the CONCISE edition of this book, the binding has gone, and is long over due that I replaced that book with this new edition.

This is a very accessible and informative book for any student or reader of Eng. Lit. The perfect school prize!

4.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative

M. · 3 December 2012

I was more surprised by the omissions than the inclusions, some of the greatest genre writers are missing from this and it is heavy biased towards a male view of literary fictions

excellent vendor

It would be nice if it was color coded for fiction or none fiction

A must read..

There are so many people who recommended this book to me for my NET preparation. I finally got hold of it and it's definitely the best. It has everything, all the writers, works, terms and other important things. It's a must read for a literature student. Also the book was properly packed and timely delivered.👍👍

プリント作るのに非常に便利だが, コピーするとイタリック体が元にもどってしまう。検索が厳密で大文字小文字もこだわるので、もっと楽に検索できると良い。
