About the Author

Jeremy Butterfield is an OUP author, language expert, writer, and lexicographer. For many years he worked in senior editorial positions in Collins English and Bilingual Dictionaries. He is also the author of the popular book on the English language, Damp Squid: The English Language Laid Bare (2009), as well as the Oxford A-Z of English Usage (2013).

this is the shorter version or pocket book so gives shorter examples of descriptions. The original book gives funny examples which make remembering easier, these seem to be lost in the consise version. Ok for 10 gbp

The language has moved on since publication of the original Fowler's guide, and in common with modern dictionaries, this edition has moved along the scale from prescription towards description, but with a degree of authoritative gentle persuasion. An absolute delight for browsing, consulting and dipping-into.

Robert Allen (2008): Pocket Fowler's Modern English Usageの改訂版。古くなった項目が削除され、hashtag, selfie, unfriend, などの新項目が約200追加され、語法の最新情報をよく伝えている。The Oxford English Corpus, OED3版(オンライン版)をベースに、編纂しているので語法記述は概ね記述主義的で、「…というべき」「…というべきでない」といった規範的,断定的な記述は比較的少ない。最近10年間あまりの語法変化は複雑でかつ急速なので断定的な判断を容易に下す事ができないという実態を反映していると考えてよいだろう。本書は単独で使用してもよいが、上記の旧版Pocket Fowler’s と比較してみるのも有益である。また、本書の編者Jeremy Butterfield は親版Fowler’s Dictionary of Modern English Usage (2015)の編者でもあるのでこれらの語法辞典を比較参照することによってここ数年の英語の語法の実相をより深く把握することが可能だろう。
