This visual reference book starts with the question "what is an animal?" and takes you through the animal kingdom - mammals, reptiles, birds, and sea creatures. It uses a unique head to toe approach that showcases in spectacular detail special features such as the flight feathers of a parrot, the antenna of a moth, or the tentacles of coral.

This visual encyclopedia is filled with clear and fascinating information on everything about the social lives of animals. Read exciting stories, like how animals communicate, defend their territories, and attract mates.

Learn how evolution has helped wildlife to adapt to their unique environments, whether it is the ability to live in difficult habitats, adjust to specific diets or how they work physically.

Humans have drawn and painted animals for thousands of years.
The Science of Animals has included some of these, such as early rock art that depicts our awe of the animal kingdom, or natural history artworks such as the ones commissioned by the Mughal Courts in the 1600s.

With spectacular, studio-quality photography and clear explanations, this book reveals the incredible anatomy, behaviour, and beauty of every type of creature, from hair to scale and whisker to tail.

This elegant introduction to zoology offers interesting views, angles, and close-ups that show you animals in surprising detail. The unique nose-to-tail approach, with chapters on different body parts, allows you to focus in on the beauty of the antenna of a moth, the flight feathers of a parrot, or the feeding tentacles of a jellyfish. It explains how form relates to function - how each feature is an evolutionary answer to the challenges of environment and lifestyle.

Features on key animals combine photography from the field with rounded descriptions of star species. These species are glowing examples of hunting, speed, camouflage, or any topic in question. The Science of Animals also explores how we have depicted animals in art, from zoological drawings that recorded new discoveries to great paintings inspired by a deep connection to the natural world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning, informative book...

The media could not be loaded. This book is beautiful and perfect for anyone who loves nature/wildlife and is interested in how animals evolved and the function of their attributes. It is made in typical DK style with lots of stunning photographs with accompanying information. There are not large amounts of text, but enough to be interesting and informative. There are also some sections on animal art throughout history and a glossary at the back.It is suitable for any age really, although younger children may find some of the scientific language difficult to read.It a large book (approx 31cm x 26cm) and quite weighty. It has 336 pages.Would make a lovely gift for any animal lover (or yourself!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, but beware…

This is a great book, but I was in the process of looking at another currently advertised on Bolo, entitled “Zoology”, produced by the Smithsonian, is exactly the same apart from the americanised spelling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with an engaging structure

L. · 20 January 2024

I was drawn into getting this book for my boys (5 and 7) by the beautiful photos and amazing imagery. What we have enjoyed most however is the way the book is structured. It is not a encyclopaedia of animals from A to Z, instead it is structured around the elements and features which animals have in common or that make them unique. This makes for a far more engaging and informative read. Just flicking through the amazing images is also good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book

O.W. · 23 March 2020

I study Zoology at university and bought this book to support my studies and it did not disappoint. The detailed information written and the excellent species examples given were brilliant, informative and it makes for an excellent read. Some of the jargon is a bit complex, so younger audiences may not fully understand what is written, but for myself it was perfect. Bought it second hand for significantly cheaper than the original retail price and it arrived with only a few chips in the spine, thoroughly impressed!

Gorgeous book!

I like books that make me smile, or silent. This edition is exactly one of those. Breathtaking fine photography, eye-catching close-ups, and indeed curious details about animals. I just like the way it is designed, all the material collected in it, and the size is perfect. Absolutely adore this book. It's great in every way and just makes me happy.
