5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book to keep
Bought this for my daughter of the same name. Finally got her reading a good, long and classic book. It's beautifully made - she loved the pink & the built in bookmark ribbon. Staff at school liked it and it survived every day to/from school in her bag until she was finished. Would make a lovely gift.

E.B. White was an American author, born in New York in 1899. He was the author of several highly popular books for children. Charlotte's Web is one of his better known titles, and was first published in 1952. In 2012, a survey of School Library Journal readers for the best children's novels saw Charlotte's Web top the poll. White's other awards a special Pulitzer Prize and Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal. He died in 1985.As Charlotte's Web opens, a litter of pigs has just been born on the Arable farm. Mr Arable is planning to kill one of them, a runt, believing him to be too small and weak to survive. His daughter, Fern, is desperately upset and pleads with her father to spare him. Unable to refuse his daughter, he relents - but insists she takes reponsibility for the young piglet. Fern throws herself into the task, raising Wilbur - as she has christened him - by hand in the house. After six weeks, her mother insists Fern sells Wilbur to her uncle, who lives just a little down the road. It's a state of affairs that pleases Fern to begin with - she's six dollars better off, and she can visit Wilbur as often as she likes. However, Wilbur's not out of the woods yet. Fern's uncle isn't raising Wilbur out of love - he's planning to serve the young pig up on the dinner table. Luckily, help is at hand. Charlotte, a spider who lives in the doorway of Wilbur's bar, has taken a shine to him and promises to save him. This is a wonderful book - I read it first as a nine year old, and have adored it ever since. It opens a door on life, death, loss, change and taking responsibilty. (That's something that I may not have been consciously aware of, back then, but it's a little more obvious to me know). Absolutely one of the great children's books and totally recommended - both for kids and nostalgiac adults.
