5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to planning a holiday
I really like using DK Eyewitness books when planning my holidays and I always use DK guides in the planning stages as I think that they point you in the right direction of what to see and do. This is a DK book about Florence and Tuscany. DK books are fantastic for holiday planning in any country. They are so useful and are packed with pictures, maps and information. This book is a great size to take away with you, packed with so much information, pictures and ideas. It is a good overall guide, which will point you in the right direction of places to visit. I usually use a guide like this to get ideas then research things on the internet. Great little guide perfect for planning your next holiday at a reasonable price. The front cover is a pull out map of the Florence and Tuscany area. This book is split into 3 sections, Discover, Explore and Need to Know. It provides information on the different areas of Florence and Tuscany and what to do, see and explore in each of them. It has information on the history of the area, where to eat, where to shop, everything you can think of. In the back there is another fold out map of the area, which can be removed and put in a bag or pocket. This book is a great size to take away with you, packed with so much information, pictures and ideas. It is a good overall guide, which will point you in the right direction of places to visit. I usually use a guide like this to get ideas then research things on the internet. A great guide perfect for planning your next holiday at a reasonable price. Currently priced at £11.95.
5.0 out of 5 stars One of the better DK guides I've seen but please check to see if it provides what you want!!!
I'm often not a fan of DK guides but have tended to like the more recent Eyewitness series. I think the issue for me is I find the small guides too brief and glossy and the big guides too detailed without being inspiring but at first glance this one seems to have hit the spot.It covers Florence and Tuscany (Florence being the main city in Tuscany) but this is where there is a catch - if you want to plan a few days in Florence the book is great; if you want to spend a few days in Florence and then some time seeing a bit of Tuscany also great. However, I do feel some parts of Tuscany are covered too briefly, notably Siena - a city I've never been to but have always been inspired to go.. this book dampens that quite a bit as it gives the impression there's not so much to see (it gets 7 pages, as does Pisa, compared to 75 pages for Florence)Overall I do like this guide and will definitely use it when I get the chance to visit Tuscany - the shape of the book is also good as it easily goes into a rucksack and isn't too thick... there is also a good map at the back.My only real moan is this is very much a Tuscany guide with a focus on Florence rather than a more general Tuscany guide - perhaps that's fine though.
2.0 out of 5 stars Not the most useful
I didn’t find this book particularly helpful, possibly because I brought the kindle version which was just a pain to use because of the reference links which move you around and it’s easy to lose your place in the book. There is nothing wrong with the content if you want a how to guide for the area but I don’t think it worked and it’s much easier just to use the internet and plan your own routes and trips when there. Also the book (and if I am wrong about this I will edit) didn’t mention anything helpful about certain idiosyncrasies of Italy that we would have needed e.g.- Driving tips (we drove around Tuscany and then had to navigate the no drive zones in towns, advice on this would be great)- Town tips - parking in castle towns etc, payment to these towns- More food guidance - Tuscany is meat eaters paradise but vegetarians can struggle, so mixing it up would be great. It’s my first time buying a guide like this and I won’t do it again. I would recommend the Boboli gardens in Florence and visiting some of the little walled towns like Monteriggioni, they are lovely!
Powerful for a small book
Planning our trip to Italy, and this book gave a lot of ideas we had not thought about. The map is great too. Full of information and ideas you'll need if heading out to Italy for the first time. Heavy duty outer cover. Be careful when opening the map from the back of the book. It's a great map but the unfolding process was a wee bit difficult for old fingers. In future when I buy this type of book, I'll make sure to remove the map from the gooey stuff before opening.
not as good as most eyewitness books
I am a huge eyewitness guidebook fan, and usually find them to be among the best, so bought this sight unseen in a hurry. It ended up being disappointing. I found it frustrating that it didn't give admission prices (even if they've gone up, it's helpful to get an idea) and it really wasn't very comprehensive, especially for places outside Florence, like Lucca and Pisa. Also the main Lucca page was misprinted and blurry to the point of being almost unreadable. It also didn't have good maps for places other than Florence (usually why I love Eyewitness). I had an older Frommer guide to all Italy that actually provided better information on Tuscany than this. Lesson to me to preview before I buy.
Perfect guide book for Florence
I used this only for Florence. It was perfect. It had all the important places to go and see with great explanations. We did not explore any other parts of Tuscany during this visit, so this book was great for our needs. We left it with our daughter who is studying abroad in Florence and it was useful for the first month until she was familiar with the area. The guide has translation in the back and a small removable map in the back. The size is great for putting in your carryon and reading on the plane.
Really good for your first Florence visit.
Has current valuable information, especially if it’s your first time in Florence.
Not as much info on Florence
This is a disappointment in comparison to other DK travel guides. Not as much info on Florence as I had hoped, but not entirely useless.
