A critical and cultural theory reader

Description:

About this item:

Praise for the first edition
“The selection is judicious and valuably supplemented by thorough commentaries that contextualise and clarify the debates and issues and the importance of each excerpt. Though today there may be many readers in and around cultural and media studies, Easthope and McGowan’s remains vital…”
Times Higher Educational Supplement

This Reader introduces the key readings in critical and cultural theory. Basic Textbook-esque book; At Times Useful

G.G. · 20 January 2015

This is your basic textbook or small collection giving a smattering of literary criticism--or at least that is what my school used it for. It is divided into these sections: Semiology, Ideology, Subjectivity, Difference, Gender and Race, and Postmodernism. With the English majors at my school, the book is notorious for being dense and at times confusing, but it served its purpose helping us learn a few theories of literary criticism. Our teacher basically had us read some of the essays, which are selections from larger works. But it was better reading the introduction to each section or hearing the teacher lecture. These are selections from a larger work, for example,Ferdinand de Saussure from the book "Course in General Linguistics," Karl Marx, Louis Althusser from the book "Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses'," Edward Said from "Orientalism," and Simone de Beauvoir from "The Second Sex." Because I couldn't sell the book back for a decent price, I kept it, and it came in handy at least once when I needed to pick what my teacher(s) called a "theoretical lens" to drive a paper. Hence, it can help you pick a theory and then you'll know what book or author to look into more. Some content can be on the objectionable-side (i.e., Freud and so forth).
