"Dramaturgy: The Basics is a profoundly engaging, accessible guide for dramaturgs. It’s packed on every page with useful suggestions and brilliant points of guidance on what to look for and how to research, sift, prepare and present information: in short, how to serve a production with depth, range and flexibility. This book should be on every list of essential texts in Theater Studies. And, for the theater-lover sitting in the stalls, it also provides a deeply absorbing look ‘behind the scenes.’" ― Dr Philippa Kelly, Resident Dramaturg, California Shakespeare Theater, USA

A look at one of the most recent additions to storytelling's cast of characters: the dramaturg.

E.C. · 7 March 2023

As a playwright I got exactly what I expected from this book: how the third eye of the dramaturg can enrich and deepen the writer's writing, resulting in more thoughtful and impactful storytelling. What I didn't expect was how this role can be deployed to all aspects of theatrical production: from play selection to direction, to scenic design, to community outreach, to the lobby display! The authors have explored every aspect of contemporary dramaturgy, and this book should be on every theatremaker's shelf. Eric Conger, playwright.
