About this item:
'The synoptic organization of this second edition illuminatingly represents the systematic structure of Kant’s philosophical ideas. … Guyer’s discussion is careful and thorough, situating detailed consideration of elements and arguments in the context of Kant’s thought as a whole, as well as its intellectual background. … [N]o text will provide a better or more helpful survey of Kant's achievement for advanced students or academic professionals. Summing Up: Highly recommended.' - Roman P. Bonzon, CHOICE
Praise for the first edition:
'This is the clearest, most comprehensive book on Kant’s "critical philosophy" written in English… Guyer’s book is clearly written and keeps enough distance from Kant’s texts to be helpful to nonspecialists; it also stays close enough to be nuanced and valuable even for Kant specialists.' - A.N. Bunch, CHOICE
'Kant is an absolutely first-rate general introduction to Kant's Critical Philosophy. Paul Guyer's interpretations are extremely well-supported, carefully and crisply argued, and highly insightful.' - Robert Hanna, University of Colorado, USA
'An impressive overview of the various strands of Kant’s philosophy. With great skill Guyer manages to compress Kant’s critical thought into a few hundred pages. This book will provide an excellent introduction to Kant’s thought.' - Philip Stratton-Lake, University of Reading, UK
'That Guyer is able to cover this much material, clearly and without oversimplification, in a single, reasonably sized volume represents a unique accomplishment, which should prove to be extremely useful to a broad audience.' - Eric Watkins, University of California, San Diego, USA
Paul Guyer is Jonathan Nelson Professor of Humanities and Philosophy at Brown University, USA. He is the author of nine books on Kant, including Kant and the Claims of Taste (1979), Kant and the Claims of Knowledge (1987), Kant's Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals (2007), and Knowledge, Reason, and Taste: Kant's Response to Hume (2008), as well as a translator and the editor of numerous anthologies of work on Kant. He is also the author of A History of Modern Aesthetics in three volumes (2014).

Kant is a very difficult philosopher to understand and I was taking a short course where the lecturer spoke very quickly and this book did enable me to have some understanding of the topics he was dealing with
Difficult but a must.
Even reading a guide of a specialist like Guyer’s, Kant persists to be difficult. But when someone interested in history, like me, understands Kant, even in the general sense, all the subjects of the 18 and 19 centuries will become much interesting.
a great book
a great book with lots of questions! One may get confused through reading. But when one keep reading and thinking, the book will help a lot!
Getting to know Kant
Kant's philosophy is difficult at best of times. Paul Guyer's book goes a long way towards a deeper understanding of Kant's philosophy. I bought the book in the hope of a better understanding of Kant's epistemology and also of his moral philosophy. I was not disappointed. I recommend the book to second or third year undergraduate student as well as to post-graduate students who are interested in Kant. Nevertheless, I believe that even the professional philosopher, not yet acquainted with Kant, will profit from Guyer's book as well. As a matter of fact, I recommend it to undergraduates as well as postgraduates especially of the biological sciences. Kant's epistemology should prove of great interest in these sciences. One just has to look at the writings of the scientist Konrad Lorenz who was thoroughly acquainted with Kant, to understand my last remark. I recommend this book wholeheartedly!
The two editions are the same.
Was the same as the second edition that I already have.
