The First LadiesBy Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher MurrayThese two authors did an excellent job with The Personal Librarian, I remember calling it ‘historical fiction at its finest’ in my review. I dare say that they have done an even better job with The First Ladies. With themes of race, lynching, politics, passing, diversity hires, Boston marriages, allyship, friendships and family the authors tell this amazing story about the unlikely friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune.Mrs Bethune, a powerful, resourceful and confident woman, the daughter of formerly enslaved parents, refuses to back down as white supremacists attempt to thwart her work as an activist and educator.Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of a powerful politician with a controlling mother in law who is very ambitious for her son should be more confident and self assured than Ms Bethune but finds herself admiring her strength. These two women form a friendship that can be described in biblical terms as ‘iron sharpening iron’ while making a great impact on their communities and the country as a whole. As historical fiction goes, this beautifully written book is easy to read yet full of well researched facts about the United States of America from 1927 to 1945.All the characters are well fleshed out on the pages and the imagery formed while reading the words are vivid. Each chapter is written from the perspective of these ladies so we get their thoughts and motivations as we read the words. This is an amazing book and I think everyone should read.
Enjoyable book from history
The book was in excellent condition although used and well priced.
Uma leitura muito gostosa e fluida.
Estou no inicio mas já amando!Ao começar, realmente não da vontade de parar. A história dessas mulheres é inspiradora!
Beautiful story
Im a Canadian so alot of US politics and lesser known historical US history i am unaware of such as the friendship of Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary Bethune. Eleanor being white and Mary being African American. Back in those days. It was not easy back then for them to have a friendship but they did.I have been to Daytona Beach many times and have drove past Bethune-Cookman College and not knowing the history of it but now that i know. I will definitely appreciate that school more so when i pass by it.I love reading historical fiction so that I can hear untold stories about inspirational women and the stories of the past. Two strong women that will make you love their friendship and their own contributions too society I recommend The First Ladies for fans who love Historical Fiction.Content Considerations: racism and prejudice, reference to lynchings
One of THE best book ever read!
It turns out Elanor Roosevelt was a very important person in our political history - why did it take me, at age 66, to find out about it? Also Mary`s story…..her untiring desire to help the negro population. I was shocked to read that Anti-lynching was ONLY put into law under Pres. Biden in 2022 …..It makes me sad after knowing how hard these two women worked for this all those years ago. A MUST read!
