Mein Kampf

Description:

About this item:

Mein Kampf was first published in two volumes in 1925-6 and sold between eight and nine million copies during Hitler's lifetime, as well as being widely translated. It is the most notorious political tract of the twentieth century, a mixture of unreliable autobiography and half-baked political philosophy, which brought tragedy to Germany and the world.

Mein Kampf is an evil book, but the Manheim translation remains necessary reading for those who seek to understand the Holocaust, for students of totalitarian psychology and for all who care to safeguard democracy.

This edition contains an introduction by D.C.Watt, who served as Professor of International History at the University of London from 1981 to 1993, which analyses Hitler's background, gives the origins and history of the book, and ends with a critical assessment both of Hitler's incoherent ideas and his ruthless understanding of political power.

All profits from the sale of this book are donated to an anti-discrimination charity.

Amazon Review

Mein Kampf is the angry diatribe of history’s most notorious anti-Semite, Adolph Hitler. It details Hitler's childhood, the "betrayal" of Germany in World War I, the desire for revenge against France, the need for lebensraum (living space) for the German people, the glorification of the “Aryan” race, and the means by which the Nazi party can gain power - which Hitler identified as the extermination of “international poisoners,” a thinly-veiled reference to Jews. It was largely ignored as the ranting of an obscure, small-party politician until Hitler became chancellor of the Third Reich in January 1933, when the book stood atop the German bestseller lists and the first concentration camp, Dachau, opened. As a bookseller, we think it is important to offer this infamous work because of its historical significance and educational role in the understanding and prevention of anti-Semitism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful & professionally Written

As source of the second world war one can't get much better...A book that should certainly be read as a product of education, 'Mein Kampf' is a rarity In that it's content is somewhat true and honest to the outlook of its cause. Well worth a read.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Take on Mein Kampf

P. · 5 December 2011

I chose the Ralph Manheim edition and it was not an easy read. The translation was very literal and long winded and of limited English expressions & idioms to make the text more understandable. To be honest a fair amount I didn't understand and I wonder if that was, rightly or wrongly, a deliberate act to discredit the author. As in other reviews on Mein Kampf there were many parallels with the strengths and weaknesses of to-days politicians and the importance of getting the propaganda right and the power of the spoken word as opposed to the written e.g. todays politicians clambering to appear on the radio and television to convey their respective manifestos. My very basic conclusion was that the German nation was tired of Marxism and those that controlled it. They were tired of crippling inflation that destroyed the middle classes and the crippling reparations resulting from World War 1. Germany sought to regain respect and that would not have been forthcoming from a weak, Marxist, bourgeois government. Hitler, the dictator, was put in to power to change all that. But sadly, like all power hungry politicians, they lose their way and turn into monsters. Perhaps if Hitler had turned towards England and not Russia (you never take on Russia, ask Napoleon) we would now all be driving top of the range Mercedes, Audis and Porches. Or perhaps not. You choose.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ramblings of a mad man...

K. · 11 July 2024

Having never read this in my younger years, I was intrigued when my son decided to purchase it. After my initial misgivings, I felt myself inclined to read this book. The ramblings of Adolf made for an incoherent book with a lack of a consistent narrative of even his own viewpoints, however it did offer some insight into a man with deep seated issues and burgeoning narcissism. It will forever be consigned to history as a manifesto of hatred and ill-conceived views on humanity, but nevertheless a book that still deserves to be read in order to provide an insight into the dangerous mind of someone who tried, but failed, to undermine the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening

As a mature student who is revisiting history, I found this book very useful. It becomes immediately apparent that it is going to take determination and perhaps an amount of cross referencing to fully understand the author and his convictions. My over riding feeling is that reading this was a rather destructive process. Things that I thought were clear in my mind have been scrambled. This is not what was sold to me all those years ago in the class room.Hitler was a tormented, anxious, barbaric visionary who had leadership qualities in abundance. This insight is worth a few pence of anyone's money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mein Kampf to not be a Pimmelkopf but failing!

F.F. · 27 August 2013

I read this to see if I could understand why dear, old Adolf was quite so raving barkerooney and while I can understand his intense dislike of the government and the Austro-Hungarian Empire; his bitterness in defeat in the Great War and his general "I could do better" attitude, I cannot understand why he has this inexplicable hatred of the Jewish people when, in his earlier rants (Boy! Does he waffle on),, he states that he had no problem with Jews and was disgusted by certain German newspapers' anti-semitism but , obviously, later decides that the Jews are the scourge of the Earth and until they're eradicated from, at least, Germany, they will continue to spread weakness, greed, corruption until they destroy or convert mankind. I didn't really get to the reasons behind these opinions because I had some paint on a wall that i wanted to watch drying. Unless you are a mad BNP supporter or neo-Nazi IMHO do not read this book because, above everything (racism, anti-semitism, xenophobia, evil etc) it's very long and very dull.

Haven't read it as of yet, I would be interested in getting a copy from the time in the original German.

2.0 out of 5 stars My struggle was finishing such a flawed, boring book.

D.M.G. · 26 January 2018

What is the reader to make of this yard-thick work of propaganda so many years later? Some of it is interesting, some if it is just so blatantly flawed and puffed up you wonder how this man ever made it to be leader of the third Reich. In one breath, Hitler is criticising his enemies for their lack of sound reasoning or intellectual rigour.... the next, one of the main reasons he gives for his distrust of the Jews is the way they smell (yes, really).Hitler's true genius is clear: understanding how public opinion is manipulated and how political power and propaganda work. Here's the oddest thing though- for such a master of propaganda, this is a dull book in large tracts. Adolf is such an annoyingly jumped up ego, but he is no philosopher. So many ideas are just plain dated or wrong (that only a racially pure society can work, or his assertion that Britain will never relinquish India- which history proved wrong soon after WW 2). Perhaps most alarmingly on some levels he shows occasional sense and even (shudder) compassion for the plight of the common man (well the pretence of it anyway). But elsewhere he is just fundamentally guided by his own inflated ego, which is so much stronger than his intellect. For this reason alone we should allow anyone seduced by fascist ideas to read this book, because anyone with half a brain ought to cringe not just in disgust, but at what a cynical and limited mind this is.Personally, I found it occasionally interesting but hard work; I had no idea fascism could be this boring.

Libro histórico. Larguísimo y poco sorprendente

J.M. · 25 March 2020

Second time reading it

Putin is brilliant. He is unable to beat the USA and NATO in battle

v.c. · 5 June 2017

Mein Kampf, by Adolf Hitler, should be read by everyone in the world who are interested in a world of peace, social responsibility, and worldwide cooperation. This evil book presents a dark vision of how to go about creating tyranny in a democratic society so that one, similar to Russia, is created.A reader may be lead to believe by the text that it is not just the bible for white supremacists, alt+right groups, etc., nationally and internationally, but it is also Putin's blueprint for the "deconstruction" of democracies worldwide.Putin is brilliant. He is unable to beat the USA and NATO in battle, but he can destroy our democracies--from within. We see this idea at work in Eastern Europe, France, Germany, Brexit, and now, America.Reading this book, you realize that, in such a society, there is one rule: "Profit over People" (Noam Chomsky), meaning corporate greed, along with the creation of need. Then, add religion to the mix.Hitler spoke at length about the education of youth in a society or rather the miseducation of youth. Under the administration, American education is currently being undermined in just the ways that Hitler and Putin agree. In Hitler's compelling narrative, his ideas on science are morbid but necessary to the blueprint. Essentially, in Hitler's society and in today's America, we see the death of "truth" and history being rewritten. However, American journalists and reporters will not allow truth to die or history to be rewritten. It will be over their dead bodies and many patriotic citizens who affirm an American free press and free speech guaranteed by the Constitution.President Donald Trump said, during the 2016 campaign: "I am a Russian asset." However, he is not the only one in his administration. Bannon is the brains of the network. It will be proven that they are all involved in this particular Russian network--if an independent commission is permitted to form and investigate fairly.Mein Kampf, looking through the lens of our country, at least since the Reagan administration, shows that Putin was and is working through once-secret American organizations like ALEC, alt+right, KKK, Citizens United, Exxon, some Republicans, mega churches, etc.Scapegoats, such as Jews, peoples of color, non-white and non-Christian immigrants, are required for the blueprint to work efficiently. War is another prime ingredient in Hitler's and Putin's blueprint. Currently, in the USA, more troops are being transported to the Middle East, but the numbers are not being announced to the public. Trump-Bannon-Pence desire a return of the draft. In America's future, we are in preparation for a large-scale war. It is a requirement in Hitler's blueprint.Decades of Putin's work has born fruit. The Trump-Bannon-Pence administration is the product of a Russian network that extends into Congress down through the grassroots level in our society, and it branches out into most sectors of our society that are considered important, i.e., banking.Bannon controls the black bloc; Hitler controlled the Storm Troopers. Their purpose is and was to break skulls by inflicting violence on peaceful protesters. The Trump administration is generally press-free. In fact, there is openly expressed hatred of the "free press" as an "enemy" of America by the Trump administration. American institutions, hundreds of years old, must be denigrated and trashed by the Russian network that controls the White House.President Trump has bragged that he has forces that will perform his will, although he did not call them by name. We saw them in operation when a peaceful march in Washington, D.C., turned violent before his inauguration, and again, at Berkley (California) when a peaceful student protest turned violent by men with baseball bats and large sticks wearing black masks to hide their faces.Hitler is specific about the tools to use to destroy a social democracy: Naturally, the use of propaganda, gerrymandering to create a rigged voting system, legal and illegal voter suppression, suspension of civil rights and liberties, the creation of media empires that tell lies over and over again, the isolation of a country, "fake news," fake ads," etc. Most importantly, to Hitler, the free press is the "enemy" of an authoritarian society; therefore, it must be crushed and sent into hiding--if it cannot be completely destroyed. However, according to Hitler, to create an authoritarian society similar to Russia's, secret groups, at first, begin with hate and use it to create fear. About hate in a society, Hitler says well: "Here again it is not seldom a question of overcoming prejudices which are not based on reason, but, for the most part unconsciously, are supported only by sentiment. To overcome this barrier of instinctive aversion, of emotional hatred of prejudiced rejection, is a thousand times harder than to correct a faulty or erroneous scientific opinion. False concepts and poor knowledge can be eliminated by instruction, the resistance of the emotions NEVER."Hitler's discussion of propaganda is equally a brilliant and a specific observation of general humanity: " The victory of an idea will be possible the sooner, the more comprehensively propaganda has PREPARED people as a whole and the more exclusive, rigid, and firm the organization which carries out the fight in practice." An American Example: The Birthism Movement, created by President Trump about former President Barack Obama, was to sow hate and prejudice, thereby causing the disruption of Obama's ability to perform his job fully as "the leader of the free world." Today, some American citizens still believe that Obama was born in Kenya.Hitler was not a madman as portrayed by much of literature and in movies and on television. He was a genius--although an evil one. When you start reading this book, you will be unable to put it down as you slowly realize that Putin, NOW the most powerful man in the world, may be using this particular book as a blueprint for creating Russia satellite nations by smashing social democracies around the world; this includes American democracy. The parallels between what is occurring in America, since Reagan, are frightening. You will read all 667 pages--non-stop since this book, no longer expresses German ideology for a specific historic time period, but it is American, and even, world ideology in today's world. Also, Hitler is an excellent writer; he is not a rambling madman writing disconnected ideas and expressing a confusing methodology. His text is easy reading, and it is a world classic that is a must read.If Putin is now the most powerful man in the world, then President Trump, Steve Bannon, Trump's brain, as well as Vice President Pence, a Christian Evangelical Catholic, are the most dangerous men in the world.
