'We spend our whole lives in one body and yet most of us have practically no idea how it works and what goes on inside it. The idea of the book is simply to try to understand the extraordinary contraption that is us.'

Bill Bryson sets off to explore the human body, how it functions and its remarkable ability to heal itself. Full of extraordinary facts, astonishing stories and now fully illustrated for the first time,
The Body: A Guide for Occupants is a brilliant, often very funny attempt to understand the miracle of our physical and neurological make up.

A wonderful successor to

'What I learned is that we are infinitely more complex and wondrous, and often more mysterious, than I had ever suspected. There really is no story more amazing than the story of us.' Bill Bryson

Review

'Classic, wry, gleeful Bryson... richly interesting... an entertaining and absolutely fact-rammed book. If it sells hundreds of thousands of copies, like the last one, it will be no bad thing.' ― Sunday Times

A directory of wonders. Extraordinary stories about the heart, lungs, genitals ... plus some anger and life advice - all delivered in the inimitable Bryson style -- Gavin Francis ―
Guardian

SCIENCE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2019: 'so packed with arresting facts (you eat 60 tons of food in a lifetime) and unlikely anecdotes (such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel's six weeks with a half-sovereign lodged in his throat) that you barely notice the sheer volume of anatomical knowledge you're digesting ... makes complex subjects simple and eminently entertaining.' ―
The Sunday Times

Bryson feeds the pith, pulp and bitter pips of a subject into his brain and produces a sweet, zingy quantity of juice - this book is a delight. ―
The Spectator

Remarkable ... Every page is dense with scientific facts written as vividly as a thriller, as well as answers to conundrums such as why we don't fall out of bed when we are asleep ... It is woven through with the kind of human stories that Bryson has made his trademark. ―
Mail on Sunday

5.0 out of 5 stars Fact filled book

Very interesting book full of some incredible facts about the human body, written in Bill Bryson's easy reading style. It'll make you think about what is going on inside you and appreciate how amazing the body, and what makes it tick, is.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is really interesting, very readable and you can start anywhere in it!

So interesting - all the bits that might be incoherent to those without medical knowledge are all so simply explained. And as for those people who made medical discoveries along the way, Bill Bryson tells you all about their personalities and idiosynchrasies as well as their work. And the politics and stuff as well. Brilliant photographs. The only downside is actually the weight of the book - it's not exactly light reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Bill Bryson. You'll know it's likely to be good.

Bill Bryson has that knack of imparting lots of information, some of it mind-blowing, in a style that's easily accessible and fun to read

What a great book. I enjoy Bill Bryson's books, but having one like The Body illustrated is really good. I have enjoyed rereading it and having it illustrated makes it even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining and informative

I really like Bill Bryson. He spins a great yarn based wonderfully researched facts from the most humble starting points. All his books are a joy to read. This is no exception. I am in the medical field and found this fascinating. So much colour is added to the ‘wow’ facts by hearing the history behind the discoveries about the human body.I would say be a great purchase and read !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best edition of this masterpiece

g. · 12 January 2023

This illustrated edition of the Body by Bill Bryson is the best edition of this book I have read. It is all in large text, is easy to understand, and vividly illustrated with cartoons, scientists, and at the front and the back of the book with diagrams of the human body. This is the version that should have originally been published in 2019, as many people complained that the original book had no illustrations in it at all. This is certainly better than the original edition. Overall 5 stars.

I am over 50, but still found a huge amount of new information about myself in this book. Also good illustrations, many photographs to visualize the narrative. Very interesting reading.

Fantastic!

Everything positive you've read about this is true and then some. Outstandingly well written (Bryson still has it!), and the illustrations are a wonderful addition. Warning: this book is bloody HEAVY. Can double as a handweight.

The book is an easy to read, enjoyable addition to my personal library.
