Meaningful Journeys: Autoethnographies of Quest and Identity Transformation

Description:

About this item:

Meaningful Journeys is an edited collection of autoethnographies underpinned by the conceptual, philosophical, and etymological origins of ‘journeying,’ ‘questing,’ and traditional and modern understandings of ‘pilgrimage.’

The volume contains chapters on the ways in which all these concepts intersect with identity and identity transformation. These range across narratives of sport; adventure; preferred identity; curative religion; revered location; nostalgia; grief resolution; ‘out of suitcase’ travels; and pilgrimage journeys understood in more traditional senses. The collection showcases and promotes the identity transformational quest as an important conceptual nuance of narrative autoethnography. Readers will engage with the ways in which contributing authors craft their emerging selves into preferred identities, which showcase personal and relational change in action.

This book is essential reading for students and practitioners of autoethnography and qualitative research internationally and others interested in identity transformation in narrative inquiry.

Review

"This an intriguing book. Apart from being scholarly, it is of huge interest. I found myself transfixed by many of the journeys described. The book can be read at several levels. Two were more apparent to me. First, there are the individual journeys and stories. In themselves these are fascinating. I wanted to know more about the authors than was present in even these more authentic autoethnographic accounts. Second, there are the implications for the reader and their own life journeys. Bono intoned, ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.’ I wondered, have these authors found it? As readers we are indebted to Professor Grant and Dr Lloyd-Parkes for such a thoughtful collection of ‘travel’ accounts." -- Jerome Carson, PhD, Professor of Psychology, University of Bolton, UK

"I view this work as a foundational piece for those aspiring to write, offering insights into the creation of meaningful narratives. These narratives span a spectrum from sports and adventure to personal identity, healing through faith, cherished places, nostalgia, overcoming sorrow, nomadic experiences, and spiritual quests...I recommend this book as a foundational text for readers from traditional and practice-based disciplines undertaking qualitative research methods, subscribing to autoethnographic inquiry, and exploring their meaningful journeys of quest and identity transformation. Finally, I also find this book beneficial for crafting my meaningful journeys of quest and identity transformation in the scholarship." -- Niroj Dahal, Kathmandu University, Nepal

Meaningful Journeys: Autoethnographies of Quest and Identity Transformation is a thought-provoking anthology edited by two prominent autoethnographers, and contributed to by a group of scholars with diverse backgrounds. This work offers a unique lens through which to examine the ways in which journeys, both literal and metaphorical, shape and redefine the self. The editors (Grant and Lloyd-Parkes) have done an excellent job of curating a collection that is both diverse in its perspectives and cohesive in its overarching themes. Each chapter serves as a case study in identity transformation, with the authors using their personal narratives to explore broader cultural and psychological concepts. Whether it's a journey to a foreign country, an exploration of one's heritage, or an internal quest for meaning, the contributors highlight how these experiences challenge and expand their understanding of themselves and their place in the world. The text exposes the idea that travel is not just about physical movement but also about an internal journey, a quest for meaning, understanding, and self-discovery. The autoethnographic approach allows for a deeply personal exploration of how quest can lead to significant shifts in identity, beliefs, and worldview. One of the strengths is the book’s emphasis on the multiplicity of identity. The contributors reveal how their journeys often demonstrate that identity is not fixed but fluid, shaped by encounters with different cultures, people, and experiences. This theme resonates particularly well in an increasingly globalised world where cross-cultural interactions are more common than ever. The book deals with the notion of pilgrimage, not always in a religious sense, but as a metaphor for personal growth. Some chapters reflect hardships, challenges, and epiphanies encountered, offering valuable insights into the nature of personal transformation. It will appeal to readers interested in the intersections of travel, culture, and personal identity, and students of autoethnography. The book is a valuable addition to the fields of autoethnography, cultural studies, psychology, and travel literature. For those open to exploring the complexities of identity through the eyes of others, this book offers both inspiration and profound insights into the human experience. The reader is left with a thirst for more chapters exploring these deeply personal quests and experiences.

As stand alone stories, there are plenty of interesting tales to pull you in. Jason’s motorbike journey around Iceland for example is a well written account of a great adventure. However as a collection of journeys, I found it fascinating that each brought you back to the central theme of identify transformation, and how the journey itself contributed to this.Great read.
