Attachment across the Lifecourse: A Brief Introduction

Description:

About this item:

This thought-provoking and illuminating guide will be a helpful companion for students and professionals across the fields of psychology, counselling, social work, and health.

It explains the key concepts and describes how the main attachment types play out both in childhood and later life, and it identifies some of the intriguing questions being explored by research, such as: 'What part do individuals' attachment histories play in adult relationships?' and 'What scope is there for attachment styles established in infancy to change later in life?'

Part I introduces the reader to the key conceptual components of modern attachment theory. Part II then covers the four main attachment patterns (secure, avoidant, ambivalent, and disorganised) that have been identified by attachment researchers. Each pattern is explored and examined as it plays out across the life course. The mental health, physical health and relationship issues associated with each pattern are also considered. Part III takes a step back and acknowledges some of the unresolved questions and controversies that continue to stimulate the theory.

The second edition features a brand new chapter which considers the application of attachment theory across various settings, including forensic settings, child protection practice, and parenting interventions.

5.0 out of 5 stars easy to follow and most importantly

j.r.c. · 30 November 2015

This book, in my opinion, is well formatted. The headings and sub headings for each chapter make it a clear, indicative narrative, easy to follow and most importantly, digestible. The attachment strategies are explained in separate sections and are divided into the affects across the lifecourse. It makes it much clearer to see the potential development as life inevitably changes. The topic is a complex one and there are many facets to it, however, I feel that the author has managed to capture the essence of it succinctly and has managed to cover all the behavioural systems. I think its significant to note that more recent research has been included to analyse behavioural styles and back up the activation and de-activation of attachments in the most important relationships. Overall, the reader gets an unbiased view of the well-documented research. The author manages to make good summaries of each, without too much over complication. I would recommend this book to other counsellors/psychotherapists who want more of a general understanding of attachment theory and how it integrates into the different developmental stages of life. It offers an enjoyable read and allows the reader to be reflective of the self and others and the different behaviour strategies that are employed to attract or detract from caregiving or receiving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading if you would like to REALLY understand people.

Although this book was initially brought to assist in a course, after reading it I would suggest that it essential reading for everyone who would like to understand how a person's attachment type affects them in various areas throughout their life course. It is a well writtten easy to read book that covers a whole range of topics related to the effects of the attachment type. Not only this, but I have also learnt a great deal about myself and why I think the way I do as well as why I am automatically inclined toward particular actions and behaviour. Also after reading the book I am acutely aware of how important a loving secure family environment is in promoting the wellbeing and positive emotional development of children so that they become confident secure and capable adults. Conversely, the adverse effects of a poor environment have very negative consequences for the individual who likely becomes insecure attachment type. Such consequences are felt throughout their lives and are unlikely to be completely shaken off without being proactive.Yet despite the copious evidence as to the negative effects on the individual and on society, western governments seem to continue to do very little to promote good parenting and to encourage families to stay toghether in order to prevent broken homes and the consequential victims. I for one intend to pass the book around as I feel it can also assist individuals in understanding the possible implications of their choice of life partner, because the implications not only affect their immediate relationship with the individual, but they also impact ALL facets of family life. Although obviously you don't always consciously choose who you fall in love with, but at least this book would offer a greater understanding of the range of attachment personality types and how they are likely to think and function so that the most constructive responses can be made if your partner turns out to be an insecure attachment type.

I am writing as a trainee clinical psychologist who is very interested in attachment. This book is great for general interest but it also really helps increase your knowledge of attachment and how it relates to formulations. It is explained really well and is concise. It is the best book that I have read on attachment. It gives a thorough account of different attachment styles and what factors may contribute to these and how people may present in adulthood. It's great to dip in and out of for reference as well as reading cover to cover. If you like attachment you will love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable book for attachment theorists

H.S. · 8 March 2017

I purchased this book when I was learning about attachment theory on my level 3 CPCAB counselling course and had a theory essay to write o the subject. It's proved to be an invaluable book as it covers the theory and provides excellent examples for each attachment style. Although it says it's a brief introduction, I still found it to be detailed, thought provoking and very enlightening on the subject. I'd highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in attachment theory.

Possibly the best concise overview of attachment theory

T. · 22 December 2012

Attachment theory is a very large, complex, evolving area of research, extending from studies by Bowlby and Ainsworth in the 60's to ongoing research today. Although it has some very powerful therapeutic implications, it is not generally well integrated into psychiatric practice. A small number of practitioners coming from a psychodynamic perspective tend to view it as the explanation and means of treating all psychopathology, and it is generally omitted from much of mainstream practice, as well as not incorporated into the DSM manuals. I look forward to a volume that will cover topics such as neurobiological substrates of attachment, attachment in non-human species, the psychopharmacology of secure attachment, and a wider range of psychotherapeutic approaches, but this is not yet available. This is the best brief summary of this large and complex literature I have been able to find.

Great introduction!

S.W. · 1 February 2014

This book provided a great introduction to attachment theory. It showed the different ways that attachment theory applied through the lifespan. It looked at each of the four attachment types in infancy, toddlerhood, early childhood, late childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and late adulthood. It also discussed attachment in regards to people with disabilities. Overall, it was a great introduction to Bowlby and attachment theory. Well worth the read.
