5.0 out of 5 stars A mesmerising dive into maritime history
For anyone fascinated by shipwrecks, war relics, and rich tales of cultural heritage hidden beneath the sea, this book is a must-read. Bound’s skill as an underwater archaeologist shines through, bringing life to hauntingly beautiful shipwrecks and the tragic stories attached to them. His vivid storytelling immerses readers in his discoveries, from historical artifacts to insights into human ingenuity, acts of courage and resilience. His knowledge and passion for maritime history is infectious. This book is a deep-sea treasure in itself!
4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating collection of underwater finds!
Written as a series of short pieces on underwater wrecks and finds from across the centuries, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into a world of high risk and potential reward for those who dive and of real risk from bounty hunters and others uninterested in the history revealed. And apparently only 1% or so of wrecks have been discovered. The “short piece” style of the writing makes it easy to pick up and put down and there are some great stories here from a long career in underwater archeology. As well as a very stark reminder at the end of what we have done to our beautiful oceans. Recommended!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating record
This is a well-written account of seabed wreckage over centuries, in chapters that can be dipped into on an ad hoc basis. It is written by someone who is an expert in the subject and without hyperbole and sensationalism. Great!
5.0 out of 5 stars superb - a fascinating, beautiful book
Mensun Bound is a leading marine archaeologist, who amongst other things, found the wreck of Shackleton's Endurance in the antarctic. In this beautiful book Bound tells the story of the discovery of sunken ships from ancient Egypt to the present day. Each story is beautifully illustrated with colour photographs on the high quality paper that is used throughout the book. The writing made for an entertaining as well as informative narrative. There must be something extraordinary about the process of locating a wreck and then being the first person to see something no one else has seen for years, centuries and even millennia. The author brings that to life here as well as filling in the context of the wrecks and their history.Simply superb
