Dry: Neal Shusterman

Description:

About this item:

When the California drought escalates to catastrophic proportions, one teen is forced to make life and death decisions in this harrowing story of survival from New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman.

The drought – or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it – has been going on for a while now. Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers.

Until the taps run dry.

Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbours and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life – and the life of her brother – is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Review

No one does doom like Neal Shusterman (Thunderhead, 2018, etc.)―the breathtakingly jagged brink of apocalypse is only overshadowed by the sense that his dystopias lie just below the surface of readers’ fragile reality, a few thoughtless actions away ... Mouths have never run so dry at the idea of thirst. ― Kirkus Reviews

... the palpable desperation that pervades the plot as it thunders toward the ending feels true, giving it a chilling air of inevitability. ―

“A pacy, gripping read which combines snarky teenage dialogue and concerns about friendship, family and the future with the heightened emotion of facing the apparent end of your world.” ―
Press Association Syndicated Review

“I thoroughly, thoroughly, thoroughly, enjoyed this book. It was captivating, it was honestly terrifying. […] I loved this book so much, it was dark & shocking at times, it made me think deeply about our society’s values and the current state of our world and I love that Neal is highlighting these issues in his books. He is slowly becoming one of my absolute favourite authors.” ―

How would we all behave and what would we be capable of doing facing a total water deficiency? An intriguing and scary story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A near apocalyptic mess

K.C. · 6 July 2024

You've got the prepper, the headcase, the girl, her little brother and surprisingly when the water dries up, one way or the other the parents disapear, the crisis deepens and yet the rest of the USA look on and do nothing. A good stab at the subject

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but scary

A scary look at what could happen in the future, Shusterman is a master at this sort of story

5.0 out of 5 stars Throat-scratchingly realistic dystopic vision of an all-too-possible 'what if'...

K.J.K. · 21 October 2018

I kept a water bottle to hand when reading this, and took more swigs from it than I needed, just to reassure myself I could. This latest 'what if' apocalypse vision shows what happens on a fairly small scale when one state in America one day turns their taps on and nothing comes out... It's a read-it-fast book, with multiple characters and a story you get caught up in instantly. After all, who wouldn't be affected by water running out?In their suburban home, Alyssa's family don't feel panic straightaway when the water stops flowing. They'll pick some up at the store later... but of course, when things start to feel more serious, and her parents go out for supplies but fail to return, she and her younger brother must step up and face the situation. Next door, part of a survivalist family, Kelton knows they are equipped to outmanoeuvre the 'sheep', though his feelings for Alyssa bring conflicting feelings about his loyalties. As the crisis deepens, we watch the world descend into chaos and anarchy, with the resulting brutalities and inhumanities slowly creeping in. It feels insidious and genuinely frightening, as of course - we would all be put in similar moral quandaries if this happened in our neighbourhoods. While sometimes the characters do behave in ways you can't quite believe, the story itself, the psychological aspects of the crisis, the building tension and drama, it makes for an absorbing YA novel.I do love Shusterman, his Scythe and Unwind series both some of my recent favourites, and this standalone a testament to the power of a good idea. I read in mounting horror, though I knew just how people were likely to behave, at the mounting atrocities. It almost feels like a 'survival guide' at times, with case studies of how not to cope and strategies for getting through a water shortage - I just hope I never need to refer back to it!A very interesting selection of protagonists, with some developed character arcs that I felt were believable. A good exciting denouement, and a proper conclusion where you find out what happens - a nice change from cliffhangers and sequel-teasers.A lot of violence and emotional wrangling, so I'd recommend this to age 14+, and hope adults take a peep too. With thanks to Walker Books for providing a sample reading copy.

Enjoyed this. It keeps you hooked and doesn't flinch away from the darker side of human nature and our desperation to survive. It doesn't leave you hopeless either though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his other works

Ohh I did not think I'd be saying this about a Neal Shusterman book but I did not like this book. I absolutely adored the Scythe series and Unwind, but this one felt like a completely different author and didn't seem to have the same heart or grit that the other books had. What could have been a really interesting look at humanity, and how they cope in the face of abject horror and little hope. fell flat due to the awful awful characters. I hated every main character in this book (and there were a lot) and they all felt so one-note and annoying. I could not see any character development throughout this book and instead they stayed the same daft characters that we started with. They just very much seemed to be stereotypical characters who didn't leave their box. I always find it hard to enjoy a book if I don't love the characters and this is where this book fell down for me.In terms of the plot, I will admit that some bits were interesting; the different reactions of people to the tap-out were intriguing and I felt vaguely realistic. Events can make good people do bad things and then you have to live with it. BUT this book had too many moments of the characters surviving and getting out of things that they just shouldn't have. There was never any worry about any character because you knew they were never in danger;***SPOILER***the fact that both parents survived and both happened to be in facilities that had water was ridiculous, and then Jacqui ending up being alive at the end like... okay we get it, no one is dead . The ending was just a bit odd and felt entirely rushed. I just really did not enjoy this one.

Ok

A great book. I could not put it down. As a non-native speaker, I had no problems understanding the words. I highly recommend it and I also recommend keeping a water bottle nearby because you will be thirsty as hell. This book also could be a great addition to the EFL classroom☺️

Nice

Encuentro que la trama engancha desde el principio, no se hace pesada y al mismo tiempo te hace reflexionar. Que más se puede pedir?

WOW - A MUST READ

C. · 15 February 2020

This book was so good…WOW. It made me laugh, cheer on and scream at the characters all at the same time. Neil's and Jarrod's writing style is so beautiful and unique, and the story captivated me from the very start all through to the end. The topic is so relevant yet so uncommon and Alyssa's, Garret's, Kelton's, Jacqui's and Henry's interesting and different personalities tie it all together very nicely. Apparently the authors are adapting it for a FILM. I can't wait!!!!! Amazing work and a must read. Why are you still reading my review?Go download the book!
