5.0 out of 5 stars Read in one go - unputdownable!
(function(){ P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function'){ A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })() Fast paced, with twists and turns galore. Strong female characters in dire situations give the whole ‘what happens next?’ feel as each chapter sequels into the next with cliff-hanger endings. And the last few pages…I’m mind blown. Waiting for the movie, there has to be one!
4.0 out of 5 stars Plot seems implausible but it kept me hooked
I can't remember what was the trigger to buy this book but it seems to review well (and has sold huge numbers). I think I may have confused it with The Maid but I liked the sound of this book so decided to give it a go. By the look of the cover it's going to be great.I'd not heard of the author but was interested in her combination of medical and psychological thriller writing as careers. I was also impressed with her long list of novels. This book has 328 pages split into 61 chapters and was first published in 2022.From the start it is clear that something awful has happened. We are then taken back a few months to find out what. There are plenty of secrets and some very weird events. The readers senses are heightened and there is a lot of suggestion. The narrative starts looking from Millie's perspective - she is very cautious of her environment although is not an innocent party which adds plenty of layers. The concept of the plot is tight with a small cast of characters making it an unchallenging book to read but there are enough twists to keep the attention all the way through.Gradually the story moves along, all the time keeping enough tension to make you think it is all going to go wrong at any moment. The prologue has introduced the idea of a body in the attic but there is a lot to be discovered before the book gets to that.Complexity is added and, whilst it all seems implausible, I did get hooked in and I loved the ending. It seemed unlikely that this book is going to be developed into a series but that is what has happened and I'm definitely going to get the next one.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very bingeable
Oh my goodness this book blew me away! Not even kidding. It was so bingeable. I could not put it down. The plot was so good and I absolutely loved the twist! The characters were all great. I felt sorry for Millie for how Nina treated her. CeCe was a mega brat. Nina was a bit neurotic but understandable. Andrew was a different kettle of fish altogether. I'm saying nothing about this suave, handsome and charming man. The characters all worked perfectly together in the story. The story itself was so well written. There were no plot holes or any unanswered questions by the time the read was over. It honestly made my day. I love a thriller and I definitely think Freida is the queen of them! I love a plot twist that's unexpected because I can't work it out and this book delivered!I highly recommend this if you love thrillers. Also if you've never read a thriller or want to read more then please make this your first port of call!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Just Wow.
Before reading this I had really high expectations because of all the hype around this book and around the author. I normally read indie self published authors who I think are brilliant and are worth giving a chance over some of the traditionally published orders. So I went into this book expecting a lot from it and determined not to like it. Wow. Just Wow. My opinion of the book quickly changed. While the first half is a bit of a slow burner it quickly changes gears and ratchets up the thrills and suspense and I loved it. I just heard that there is going to be a movie made. I can definitely see Sydney Sweeney playing Millie but I’m not sure about Amanda Seyfried playing the character of Nina. While reading it and how the book describes her I was picturing someone more like Christina Hendricks.
3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5⭐
My little intro to Freida McFadden. I read this for my book club so I want to write a more in-depth review in order to remember how I felt about this book when we have our meeting (and it's currently 4am, so gimme a second while I gather my thoughts).Alright. So... while I will not be revealing spoilers in this review, I personally feel like thrillers should be gone into absolutely blind, so if you are of that same opinion do not read past this point. Also, I am not a thriller girlie so take whatever I say with a grain of salt.I was feeling kinda disappointed for the beginning up to the middle of this book. I felt like it was so painfully "thriller-formula" and I wasn't appreciating all the conveniently ominous signs strewn all over the place. I know they're designed to rope you in but it just made me roll my eyes and sigh. From the middle onwards towards the end I did appreciate the direction the story took, away from obviously ominous and heading into clever territory, and I do like a clever spin to a story. The last chapter had me sighing a bit again, though. The convenience of these specific characters, each with their own unlikely story, somehow ending up entangled in the same place by chance is a tad too coincidental for me (one of them felt to be there purely for plot progression and fan service which I just find kinda bleh).Freida did a good job making me hate Nina, though, especially considering the direction she went in with that character. I probably appreciate that the most from the entire book.Did not like the epilogue. The epilogue feels like a silver platter serving up "death to eeriness" by not letting you wonder why some people can get as twisted as they do. The presence of all the answers ended up boring me a bit, unfortunately.I would like to write more, but it's nearly 5am and I'm also writing this review via that popup you get in the kindle app and I don't have access to activate the spoiler button, so I'll leave it at this.
Espectacular.

An Absolute Page-Turner!
Freida McFadden has crafted a psychological thriller that grabs you from the very first page and doesn't let go until the jaw-dropping finale. The Housemaid is filled with unexpected twists, a perfectly unreliable narrator, and an intense, eerie atmosphere that had me reading late into the night. The protagonist, Millie, is both relatable and mysterious, which makes her journey incredibly compelling. I loved the way McFadden slowly unraveled layers of the characters, keeping me guessing about everyone's motives. Just when I thought I had figured out what was happening, another twist would leave me completely stunned. This book is the perfect mix of suspense, intrigue, and dark secrets. If you're a fan of thrillers that leave you gasping, The Housemaid is a must-read. I can't recommend it enough!— A truly unforgettable read!
wow
Great pace and narrative. Hard to stop reading and the surprises are all over all the time. Can’t miss it.
simplesmente sensacional
Aguardo o filme!!! Sensacional a reviravolta final da história, vale a pena a leitura.
