If you're relatively new to finance and accounting this book is a real eye opener. It explains a great deal about what the numbers mean and how they affect you. I was especially blown away by the revelation that these number aren't as precise as most people would have you believe. This book gives you a more realistic perspective of the financial statements, it explains the role of accountants and how financial statements can be manipulated to 'look' more attractive depending on whose looking at them (bank managers, investors, owners etc).It even goes into some detail about how various companies took these adjustments to extreme levels and abused some of the tools when creating financial statements to make the company look better off (and the eventual demise of these companies through these questionable practices). But most of the book is about how to better understand and manage your financial figures more intelligently. It teaches you how to interpret your own financial statements of your business and how to better understand your business's financial position (as well as applying these tools to other companies).Surprisingly this book isn't just pages of numbers and accounting case studies, it's more of a guidebook for the average person. There are a few bits of jargon in this book that may make some readers stumble a little. However, the book does do a fantastic job at explaining all the important facets of an otherwise over-complicated subject in easy to understand terms. If you've studied basic accounting before but still struggle with a financial statements and their implications, this book will definitely help. This book is also essential reading for anyone who wants to run their own business someday but are a little in the dark when it comes to financial and accounting matters.Overall, a great book, well written, insightful, and a rare yet essential text for those interested in the subject. My only irk is that this book alone won't answer all your financial questions, but it is still essential reading and a good addition to your knowledge-base on the subject.

Excellent book. Great format In terms of breaking down financial statements. The right blend of layman's terms with technical terms and concepts explained throughout. Exercises at the back of the book theory applicable to real financial statements. The aim of the author was to remove the 'mystery' from accounting, an aim which they 100% met.

it's easy to digest

T.M. · 19 October 2017

I stumbled across this (or, really, algorithm recommendation) this summer, sadly after I finished my first grad degree. Now on my second grad degree, one of my professors assigned us this book. If you're not a business analytics, accountant, or hard core MBA but need to understand the "basics plus" of finance, then you should read this book. It's written for us normal people, it's easy to digest, and even has exercises in the back you can work through. Paired with some online classes like Lynda.com (I'm not paid, I just like to round out my learning with some "lectures" vice only reading) you should be able to understand what finance people are talking about as it relates to your business.

Must read

We often take financial principles for granted, and assume that everyone working in an organization would be well aware of these. However, it really often is not the case. This book lays out the fundamental principles of reading financial statements and understanding the basics. The message of the book is clear: finance isn't a science, but an art; and knowing every assumption behind the numbers will make you realize what is actually going on

The best book that I've found on finance for business. Highly digestible and not dry in the least.

R.S.W. · 27 August 2016

I expected this book to put me to sleep. However, I found that the information was incredibly easy to digest. The authors do an absolutely amazing job turning what could easily be one of the dryest subjects into a pleasant read packed with vital information for any business owner. Highly recommended.

Slightly disappointing

D.F. · 7 August 2016

I am not a "finance guy", however was still left a bit disappointed by the little insights I gained from this book.I was missing more practical "hacks" and tricks on how to set up finance in a startup in the real world.
