How to Be an Outstanding Primary School Teacher

Review

David Dunn has written a highly challenging and yet supportive text for primary school professionals. His book surveys all the essential elements of high quality professional practice and explores, in a practical and purposeful way, strategies to help move teachers to the highest levels of professional practice. This book will be a powerful resource for personal reflection and planning, as a support for performance management and as the basis of shared professional learning and development. --John West-Burnham, Professor of Educational Leadership at St Mary s University College, Twickenham, UK

This book contains many excellent, practical, and often fun ideas to stimulate pupils learning and it is written in an encouraging and cheerful style which carries the reader along. Over many years in the classroom, David Dunn has experimented with many teaching tactics and ideas and shares his successes, and failures, with his audience. It will be a very useful reference book for all teachers, particularly those who are new to the profession. --Claire Gillies, Observer on Teachers TV 'Good to Outstanding'

This book has all the ingredients you need to deliver an outstanding lesson in the context of twenty first century education. Read it carefully, use it with rigour and then add your own passion personality and flair. The outcome will be outstanding teachers and outstanding learners --Will Ryan, Primary Education Consultant

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick fix!

This give you a broad overview of how to clench the deal teaching a high quality, impacting lesson with all the best tools of the trade. However you still have to deliver with confidence but at least you have the main ingredients to get started! Personally you can't fail with this book but its not enough for the long term use as in 'this is teaching in a nutshell,' you still need to gather goose fat from observing others, developing your pedagogy, knowledge and skills from experienced peers. This book also provides some good further reading links and dare I say, common sense talk in a non-patronising manner. If you are an NQT struggling ideas as it cuts to the main especially when you are bogged down with assignments and essays; if you are an experienced teacher and your confidence is low - great tick list. Easy reading too and rammed with ideas. The bits you do is research your subject base and of course start up and teach! Good luck it helped me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book

I bought this book as I am currently a primary PGCE student. Having had a look at the preview pages I liked the authors style of writing, and particularly liked the fact that this book includes tips for things you can do on a variety of different time scales (by this time tomorrow, by this time next month, by this time next term). The book is divided into sections so that you could either read it as a whole, or dip in to certain sections according to your particular interest (e.g. Assessment for Learning, Planning, etc). The way the book is written is very encouraging and it is clear that small changes can often make a big impact on your teaching. I would really recommend this book to any student teachers, or teachers in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid advice

J.H. · 26 April 2013

This book brought together many of the ideas that I had used in the past, that had got lost, in the rash of new initiatives from the government! It made me think about what I do, how I do it and why I do it. It has certainly got me back on my game. Very readable, great for dipping in to a section or two before planning for my class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - I recommend this book

I've been feeling very disillusioned with the teaching profession as I haven't been able to secure a contract since qualifying. I bought this book as 'revision' and inspiration for interviews and found it to be very good. It's written in a very easy-to-read style. The first time I read it from cover to cover and since then I've dipped in and out of it. It's excellent whichever way you decide to use it. It's fired up my enthusiasm for teaching again. I already use several ideas in the book so it's helped me to realise that I'm actually a good teacher with the potential to be outstanding. I can't wait to get a post so that I can put the rest of the ideas into practice. In the meantime, I'll use what I can when teaching on supply.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding book- not just for teachers but HLTA's too.

T. · 26 March 2013

I bought the book as a HLTA who teaches whole classes on a regular basis, the aim being to be a outstanding HLTA. Ok- so many of the strategies in the book are common sense and sound in the way of advice, but there are still lots of thought provoking tips and lot's of advice that you might not have come across.it's a quick easy read- and could be read from cover to cover, or could be dipped in and out of as the book is split into clearly labelled sections.I read the entire book in little over a day and picked up lots of ideas that i can't wait to go try.Well worth the money- i'm sure i'll use the book over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read!

D. · 22 August 2013

I am an experienced primary teacher of twelve years, and found this book a huge incentive to give my current practice a shake and examination. It is well worth a read for old, New, young, old alike!! It is focused on ofsted, which is not completely relevant as I teach in Wales, but estyn look for similar things! An ideal book if you want to make a difference and step out of your comfort zone and do the best for your pupils.

This is an amazing book! Fantastic ideas, and background in every chapter and written in a very whimsical way which makes the book very interesting and easy to get into. There are no airs and graces to this book, it is just down-to-earth advice which makes it easy to pick up and hard to put down!I can't wait to try out the ideas in the classroom! Recommended highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book

H. · 16 June 2012

I had this book on my Bolo recommendations, read the preview and was quite impressed so bought it as an impulse buy. I have not been disappointed - there were fabulous ideas, and having just had a lesson observation rated outstanding feel it was well worth the money! It is very realistic about the demands of teaching, but just changes your teaching enough to make a huge impact on the quality of learning & teaching.

Outstanding book
