About this item:
Instead of a "how" book, I've written a "why" book. It's not a "why do we knit book," but a "why do we knit the way we do" book. Once we understand the WHY we can figure the HOW to do it better!
For over a decade, I've been traveling around the country teaching knitting tricks and preaching the gospel of focusing on the why - not the how. Over the years, knitters have frequently asked me to put all the tricks in one book. (I'll try, but most likely by the time this goes to press, more tricks will have been discovered.)
I suggest that you read the book in order the first time through, from start to finish. Certain ideas build one upon the other and this will allow you to get the most from each trick. After that, I hope you'll keep it in your knitting bag and grab it anytime you want a quick refresher. Or you can flip through it in a spare moment, turning to the sections that appeal to you. How ever you use the book, I hope that it helps you knit better.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is for expert knitters too
When I discovered this book I thought it would be a good book to have in my vast knitting library, however, when I went to order it I wondered if it might be a bit basic for me, HOW WRONG WAS I? This is one of the most amazing knitting books I have ever come across, it has NUMEROUS tips in it and they are definitely for ALL knitters, I would rename it as "knitting bag of magic tricks", I cannot recommend this highly enough, if in doubt, BUY IT, and you will soon realise that it is worth every penny, I am an expert knitter and it has opened my eyes to all those little things that we put up with, that this book shows you there are better ways, it really is a revelation, one of the most important knitting books to be published.
5.0 out of 5 stars Who Knew about Knitting?
This great book is packed with things no-one taught us when we first started to knit - did we ever actually have proper knitting lessons? This book is full of tips to improve our skills. Good clear illustrations as well. And - added bonus - it lies flat when open!!
5.0 out of 5 stars A compact goldmine of knitting gems
I bought this book on a whim, on the back of the other reviews - and I have to say that it is probably the best impulse purchase I have ever made. The book compiles the author’s lifetime of knitting and teaching experience in a very portable format. It is absolutely packed with knitting wisdom, richly illustrated with crystal clear images and photos (where you can actually decipher how stitches are constructed), and peppered with hilarious quotes and anecdotes. The fact that this is not a basic knitting manual - information that is repeated in pretty much every standard book on knitting - means that the space can be dedicated to truly valuable nuggets, teaching you how to fix all those annoying little imperfections, and dramatically elevate the quality of your knits. The author’s philosophy is to give the “why” as well as the “how”, arguing that “when we understand, we remember - whereas when we simply memorise, we can forget”.I can’t believe the wealth of information that the author has managed to pack into a relatively small volume. I honestly can’t recommend this book highly enough❣️
5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful and amusing
I really enjoy this book. Patty has an amusing way of describing knitting! I’ve been knitting for well over 60 years and have taught a class on finishing techniques, but I’m learning some useful tips from this great book.
5.0 out of 5 stars SO SO helpful
This book is so so useful for any and all knitters - I have not only purchased this for myself but for friends as well who are delighted with the simple easy to follow guidelines and explanations. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced knitter this book is a great thing to have in your possession
4.0 out of 5 stars Practical

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone who knits needs this book!
I’ve flicked through the book and thoroughly read 2 chapters and I already know this book is going to be invaluable. I have followed Patty Lyon’s for a few years, discovering her from the Modern Daily Knitting site, and I love to read her How To advice columns. Sometimes I have experienced the same problem, but a lot of the time it’s something I’ve never experienced or even heard of in knitting, but I love to get my needles out and give Patty’s advice a go, so that I gain new skills and improve my knitting. This is exactly what this book is too, and I know I’m going to reach for it whenever I get stuck on a project or if I’m between projects and want to do some swatches and learn new ways to decrease etc. It’s made me think about the fabric I’m creating when I knit, and how the stitches work together, something I’ve not really thought of before. I recommend this book to every knitter, of all skill levels, I really think it will take pride of place on anyones book shelf, and become one of their most invaluable tools. Also, the binding is supposed to look like that! It’s a special sewn stay flat binding which means you can put it down and it will stay open on the same page so you can knit and follow along!
5.0 out of 5 stars This book really lives up to its title
I have been knitting for many years and we often follow practices without questioning as we learned to knit. This book combines knowledge, humour and alternative ideas and techniques to challenge what we think we know and find new skills. Recommend this book and its companion work book
A really useful little book.
If you're self taught, like I am, this is incredibly useful. You may not need to know ALL of it, but there is definitely some stuff in here that only and experienced knitter would know. I also love the way it's set up in the way we learn to knit. I'd buy it again and give it as a gift.
Fabulous resource for knitters of any skill level!
I've been knitting for years, but I still learned lots from this book! Patty Lyons is a great teacher and her tips and tricks are so easy to follow. The technical illustrations are very clear, and I love the Franklin Habit drawings. Whether you're a new knitter or a life-long knitter, buy this book! Get the companion workbook, too!
