Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos

Description:

About this item:

A supernatural sci-fi graphic novel written and illustrated by S. Craig Zahler, the award-winning film director of Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete.

An alien spacecraft the size of a city materializes over the Pacific Ocean and the nations of the world jointly engage this enigmatic and incommunicative visitor with force. This battle results in large-scale destruction on both sides, but does not answer any of the questions that will haunt humanity: What are these utterly inhuman creatures? Where did they come from? Why did they choose to visit our planet? And . . . most importantly. . . . are more forces on the way? For the bereaved billionaire Carlton Land, renowned biologist Aimee O'Donnell, and the brilliant, but blunt USAAF Chief Scientist Kenneth Yamazaki, these questions must be answered in order to safeguard the future of the human race.

Collects the original graphic novel published as an oversized hardcover with black and white art; this story is a haunting odyssey that you will not want to miss.

Review

"Like all of Zahler's work, Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos goes from the maddeningly random To an unsettling meditation on how randomness might not exist--in a personal or galactic sense. What a fantastic read!"--Patton Oswalt

About the Author

S. Craig Zahler is an award-winning screenwriter, director, novelist, cinematographer, and musician. He wrote, directed, and co-composed the score for the 2015 film BONE TOMAHAWK, an Independent Spirit Award nominated picture (Best Screenplay; Best Supporting Actor) starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins. The film garnered praise from critics and fans alike, including the New York Times, who called BONE TOMAHAWK, "[a] witty fusion of western, horror and comedy that gallops to its own beat". Zahler more recently wrote and directed BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99, a New York Times Critic's Pick, starring Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, and Don Johnson, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and also went on to critical acclaim. Both movies were added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 2017. Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, and Tory Kittles star in Zahler's new crime drama DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE.

Zahler's debut western novel,
A Congregation of Jackals, was nominated for the Peacemaker and the Spur awards, and his 2014 novels Mean Business on North Ganson Streetand Corpus Chrome, Inc. both received starred reviews for excellence in Booklist. His newest book is Hug Chickenpenny: The Panegyric of an Anomalous Child, a gothic tale that he will bring to the silver screen with the help of his new creative partners, The Jim Henson Company. After reading this strange story, Clive Baker declared, "S. Craig Zahler is certain to become one of the great imaginers of our time."

In addition to writing and directing, Zahler has founded and played in several bands, including the doomy epic metal outfit Realmbuilder, whose albums have been released by I Hate Records of Sweden. With longtime friend and songwriting partner Jeff Herriott, S. Craig Zahler co-composed the orchestral score for BONE TOMAHAWK, and the soul music for BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 and DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE as well as the jazz compositions for the latter. Zahler and Herriott also make music as Binary Reptile, a synthesizer project that provided the music for the ear movie, THE NARROW CAVES.

I absolutely loved this comic! The billionaire had a good character arc. There is enough comedy to make you smile and there are some genuinely touching moments in a comic!? The story is out there and inventive. He condensed many years into a short story and while I feel the ending was either a bit rushed or at least leaves things open for mor I couldn't put the book down and now that I've read it I just want more! Blimey must of taken some effort to have single handedly made this!Read in it's entirety 10/01/2024 while I wait for my wife in a A& E at the hospital, Cambridge, England

5.0 out of 5 stars Armageddon time.

I loved how the artist blended big budget action thrills with his usual exellent character work. A truly unique take on the genre. This one was epic but also small and personal at the same time. I know Zahler likes to do things in threes so hopefully we at least have one more to look forward to.

Zahler is a creative powerhouse

I've been a fan of Zahler since Bone Tomahawk and consumed everything he produced, including Wraiths of the Broken Land, an awesome western novel.I bought this graphic novel to read on the plane ride to Florida for a cruise... and was not disappointed. The book reads like a screenplay storyboard and I could see this being a big budget blockbuster.Lots of fun with a Zahler ending that will please fans and newcomers alike.

Zahler's skills as a sequential artist marry well to his storytelling.

Zahler's artwork has improved significantly since his first graphic novel. Not so much in technical illustration quality (though that has improved as well) but in the page layouts. Zahler's clever use of larger panels and sparring yet expertly chosen splash pages each lend this sci-fi tale a grand scope. Also serving the storytelling well are the the simple pen-and-ink illustrations. These provide the comic with a clarity more complex and technically proficient cartoonists often lack, opting for the Frank Quietly and Doug Mahnke school of illustration, which can easily become cluttered. In terms of pure writing, Zahler is in top form. Instead of retreating well-worn alien invasion conventions, the plot is unpredictable. Zahler also implements just enough real-world science to place this with the likes of Asimov but without becoming inscrutable or dull to to the layman. Yet the heart of any Zahler tale is in its characters, and here, he delivers one of the most layered, deeply human ensemble casts he has yet. While this tale eventually grows into a space-faring epic, the first two thirds are set on Earth, developing a variety of people under different yet cleverly intertwined circumstances. The characters are deeply flawed yet sympathetic and compelling, to the point that even without the sci-fi elements, this story would serve as a Grade A drama.Zahler's dialogue has also improved, especially compared to his features. At times, the highly stylized dialogue in Zahler's films sounds like something one would read in a Donald Duck comic, the bank teller in Dragged Across Concrete being the most obvious example. This has the benefit of giving each character a distinct voice, yet often takes one out of a story that is meant to remain grounded. Despite actually being a comic book, the dialogue in Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos is far less exaggerated while still giving each character a unique way of speaking. This benefits the story, as while it falls into the science fiction category, this is meticulously researched hard science fiction, not Star Wars-style science fantasy. Thus, the often cartoony dialogue of Zahler's films would not be appropriate.Overall, Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos marks a quantum leap forward from Zahler's first graphic novel (which in its own right, is an excellent horror tale), and is highly recommended. If not for some confusing visual storytelling early on (the fact a character is injured remains unclear until it is stated in dialogue), this would have been a 5-star book.

Zahler is the real deal

Not content to wait for some hollywood chuckenut to fund his kickass scripts, Zahler has instead given us the graphic novel equivalent of a storyboard for a f***ed-up Roland Emmerich movie, sans estranged dads and environmental conspiracy theories. While I personally did not love the look of the human characters, it still contains Zahler's bittersweet characters and precisely honed skills in [realm]building.A short, thoroughly enjoyable read.
