Harold Shipman - The True Story of Britain's Most Notorious Serial Killer

The man on the cover of this book looks like he could be anyone's grandfather. It's easy to imagine him doting on his little grandkids, reading them stories from his lap and letting them play with his big, bushy beard. If you were told he was a doctor, I bet you'd imagine he was a good, kind and gentle one, with an easy, affable manner and deep care for his patients.

Harold Frederick Shipman certainly projected all those qualities, but only so that he could hide the evil that lurked deep inside. Shipman abused his trust and used his position to kill –
no less than 218 of his patients found their end at his hand, making him the United Kingdom's most prolific serial killer by a long shot.

This book tells Shipman's story, from his childhood under a domineering mother to his pathetic death in a prison cell. It will put you in the perspective of those who lived and worked in proximity to him, showing you the considerate but sometimes haughty doctor he presented himself as before taking you through the process of wrenching off that mask and uncovering the full extent of the evil festering within.

We will make a study of the man's possible motives and close with a look at the systemic failures that allowed him to kill and steps taken to make sure nothing like his murderous spree ever happens again.

A shocking concise account of one of the UK's notorious serial killers. It's appalling to think that this situation went undetected for as long as it did.

I thought that the information was presented in a concise fashion. Allowed one to understand or not understand his modus operadi. it is strange how we can be duped by someone for so long. Same old story, no one thought it could happen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise and easy to read

A.L.H. · 6 January 2017

This is a concise and easy to read account of one of the UK's most notorious killers. There isn't any truly in-depth information here but there is enough to make it a compelling read and a good starting point for anyone interested in this case.

Very disappointed in the price for this book! I got a book for £4 that’s got nearly 400 pages, this is not worth £11.99 maybe £1.99 at a push, took me less than an hour to read

What a tragedy that he went on killing for as long as he did. I enjoyed reading this book even though the subject matter was grim. This must never happen again.

Hooked on true crime books after reading this......

a. · 2 January 2017

This was my 1st time reading a book about a serial killer and it begin a true story. I found that after the 1st couple pages I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Thankfully I was off of work cuz I would read it till my eyes were watering. I Really enjoyed the way Ryan Green writes. It's so easy to follow is like he's having a conversation with you and your not reading a book. The story itself was fascinating and left me knowing I had found a new genre of books I will be reading more of! I would suggest this book to anybody looking for a great true story with a serial killer that never thought he could get caught and how they final did caught him!

One Scary Dude!

D.K. · 1 October 2016

"He could hide the evil that lurked deep inside..." Simply unfathomable how this monster with a God-complex got away with so many murders for so long a time. So many tell-tale signs and people having turned a blind eye allowed this demon to run free, I'm not surprised it was greed that finally became his undoing and only wished it would have come much, much sooner. I guess we'll never know what truly went thru his mind, tho at least there are finally more stringent safeguards being put into place to prevent medical professionals from taking things into their own hands. A good, informative read for the kickoff of October and Halloween season.

it was informative and steady but too dry and boring for my taste

S.G. · 28 February 2016

This was an interesting story, but told in a very dry manner. There was nothing that really grabbed me and made me want to finish this book in one reading; it was informative and steady but too dry and boring for my taste. I am an avid Ann Rule reader and I guess I wanted this book to be more like her books; and it isn't.

Not Green's best

C.M. · 5 June 2020

I've been buying up Ryan Green true crime accounts for awhile now; even tho they're available on Kindle Unlimited, I have been so impressed with this young man's writing that I wish to support him by purchasing his works instead of just reading them. Not so impressed with the tale of Harold Shipman. Altho Green gives a decent account of the story, his signature style of telling a story from the killer's perspective is notably absent. As a result, this book offers no more than that of what most of today's true crime authors serve up: a rehash of published facts from media and court filings. It's obvious that many (most) of these true crime "books" are simply a gathering and retelling of reorganized information. Ryan Green brought us a fresh and unique take on many of these horrific crimes by allowing us a view thru the killer's eyes (see review of "Killer Cop"). Sadly, that was not how he chose to write about the Harold Shipman case.Still glad I purchased it, tho, as supporting authors feels like the right thing for me to do.
