Lawyers from the Past
This book takes place in the late 1800's in New York. It's the story of two lawyers and the famousclients that they had and served in Court. It also shows that they were not 100℅ true to their business code. It is a very interesting book!
Interesting 19th Century Expose' of NYC Crime and Criminals
This book is written by one William F. Howe of the late-19th century New York City law firm of Howe and Hummels which, apparently, derived most of their business from defending the criminals of that period in NYC history. The stories told here are similar to the Herbert Asbury "Gangs of New York" as the criminals described here are much the same. The difference is that where Asbury merely described the criminals and their acts, Howe was the lawyer who defended them, the "mouthpiece" to use an early 20th century euphemism. Asbury described the gang activity of the time but Howe gets to different topics after chapter 1 where he speaks of the gangs. Most of the other chapters are devoted to topics that all seem to be related to illicit sex (HORRORS!) and described in that 18th century way where nothing explicit is said, but much is implied. It's an entertaining read, and Howe's text reminds me of reading Conan Doyle and tales of the late 19th century Sherlock Holmes and, though this may not be everyone's favorite, I do find it entertaining and, in its own way, sort of charming in that it recalls an earlier time in an earlier patois. If you, as a reader, enjoy Conan Doyle, Asbury, or even Caleb Carr's "The Alienist," then you should also enjoy this one.4 stars, a really good read.
