At times, I forgot I was reading a SK book. It just feels so different to a lot of his other work. This feels more like a book about friendship, certainly not horror or even sci fi.Loved it, a great read.

最近になってやっと映画を見たので、久し振りに読み返してみた。「リコリス・リコイル」OPの「シリ・キック」がスタンドバイミー・オマージュなのは知らなかったが、何より、原作に結構忠実なのに驚いた。200ページ前後の中編というのも、映画で原作をほぼほぼカバーするのに丁度良い分量だったのかも知れない。とは言え、クライマックスにおいて重大な原作改変がある。最期の対決シーンで銃を持つのがクリスからゴーディに変わっているのだ。映画ではゴーディを主軸として扱ったための改変で、原作者のスティーブン・キングをして「何で、自分もそうしなかったんだろう？」と言わしめたほどの良改変とされている。しかし、それによって、原作において最重要と言ってもよいセリフが削除されることになる。ナイフを持った、自分より遥かに年上で、人数も勝っている不良たちに、銃一丁で対峙するクリス達4人の少年。緊張に耐え兼ね、逃げ出すバーンとテディ。以前、バーンやテディ、それに自分は育ちが悪すぎるので、いつまでも一緒にいることは出来ない、と突き放すようなことをゴーディに言っていた、拳銃を構えたクリスの口から、震える声で、ついに本音が零れ落ちる。「Stick with me, Gordie, Stick with me, man.」「I’m right here.」応えるゴーディ。この事件の後、テディとバーンとは疎遠になるが、高校時代を通じてクリスとゴーディは「女の子の入り込む余地もないほど」、クリスのセリフ通りに、べったりと過ごすことになるので、いかに決定的なシーンだったのかが分かる。そんな重要な意味を持つクリスの一言を省いちゃっていいんですか？って？いいんです。なぜなら、エンド・ロールでベン・E・キングがしつこいくらいに言ってくれてるじゃないですか、「Stand by me. Oh Stand by me. Oh Stand, Stand by me」って。-----------------------------------------------------------ちなみに原書はよっぽどのスティーブン・キング・ファン以外にはオススメしません。何と言うか、ワード・セットが独特で、普段それなりに読めていても、聞いたことのない様な単語や表現が多すぎる。もちろん、ググっても用例が他に出てこない。イチイチ調べてると時間がかかり過ぎる。話の流れに差し支えなければ、割り切って飛ばした方が正解かも知れない。1960年前後のカルチャーへの言及もかなり多い。こちらは、好きな人にはむしろオススメかも知れないが…

Some bits of the book weren't in the movie for a reason (looking at you Chico), but overall quality book which lead to a quality movie.
