______________________________________________________________
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova.

He landed his first leading role, in
The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies - The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon - that were not just successes, but landmarks in the history of film.

In reality, Pacino was in his mid-thirties by then, and had already lived several lives.
Growing up in New York City’s South Bronx and raised by a loving but mentally unwell mother, Pacino worked odd jobs to support himself. But, in good times and bad, in poverty and in wealth and in poverty again, through pain and joy, acting was his lifeline, its community his tribe.

Exploring his iconic roles, essential collaborations, and important relationships, as well as the ever-present struggle between creativity and commerce,
Sonny Boy is the revelatory account of an incredible life.

This is the memoir of a man who has nothing left to fear and nothing left to hide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modest account of the life an absolute legend

J. · 17 October 2024

Very modest account of the life and work of Al Pacino. He had a hard upbringing but theatre and literature were always his escape. It took him till his forties to make it as a well known actor, and he very much underestimated the brilliance of some of his work. He was also a little misunderstood as being aloof, when in reality he just cared about the acting more than the fame and fortune. He looks back on his childhood fondly and is quite humble about his own achievement. His career more than proved what an icon he is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first autobiography I’ve ever read

I received this in the post this afternoon and am already halfway through reading it as I’m enjoying it so much.I particularly like the segments throughout the book with photographs of various stages and important events in Pacino’s life as some of these were photos I had never seen before. The book feels intimate and provides a wonderful insight into his private life.Pacino is a great storyteller (as evidenced by his acting) and I can tell I am going to enjoy the rest of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant

I've always preferred since it became a thing to use Audio for autobiography's because listening to someone reading their own personal is very moving. Al Pacino is one actor who I believed would never write his but he has and it's brilliant. He has lived a life and some. How is he still alive? Who knows but he is and at 84 he's as sharp as if he was 20. Long may he act and just being Al Pacino.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and eccentric, written in that unique Pacino voice.

I never buy celebrity memoirs, it's really not my thing, but I had to make an exception for this one.I'd read a long extract a few days ago (about how he nearly didn't get the part in The Godfather) and was so impressed with the writing I just had to get this book. It's bleak (especially his childhood), it's mesmerising, it's funny and also often (something I wasn't quite expecting) self-deprecating.The word "legend" is thrown around far too often, but I believe this is a man who truly deserves to be called just that.
