The Book of Herbal Wisdom: Using Plants as Medicines

Description:

About this item:

Hailed as a "classic" by leading herbalist Rosemary Gladstar, this botanical compendium provides a wide-ranging history of herbalism and useful guidance for healing with herbs

Matthew Wood is one of the United States' most renowned herbalists and the author of Seven Herbs: Plants as Healers, a watershed book in teaching herbal healing as a part of total wellness. With The Book of Herbal Wisdom, he continues and expands this study, creating a must-read guide for anyone who works in the natural health field or is interested in self-healing with herbs.

Wood creates a vast and sweeping history of herbalism, drawing on Western botanical knowledge, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese medicine, and Native American shamanic botany. Detailing the history and use of more than forty plants, he shows how each tradition views a plant, as well as its use in cases drawn from his own herbal and homeopathic practice. An initial section describes signatures, similar, and patterns in these traditions, and elements, temperaments, and constitutions. Wood has two objectives: to demonstrate how herbal medicines are agents of healing and wisdom, and to give the reader a useful catalog of plants for medicinal uses. His clinical observations of his patients bear the wry wisdom of the country doctor; his love of plants is evident in lush botanical descriptions, which show the connection between remedies--whether homeopathic, Chinese, or Native American--and the plants from which they are derived.

An introduction to centuries of lore about healing from indigenous traditions, The Book of Herbal Wisdom integrates and describes North American Indian medicine, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western herbalism like no other contemporary botanical compendium.

Review

"There are many fine herb books written by our country's great herbalists gracing the shelves these days. But only once in a while does a classic arise. The Book of Herbal Wisdom is surely that. Written with grace, intelligence, and warmth, this book is richly infused with the gift of wisdom and earns its title at every turn."- Rosemary Gladstar

I have studied herbs and their uses for many years. This book is easy to read and gives an interesting and unusual overview of 41 very useful herbs. I am enjoying it and learning new things from it. I recommend the book; it is well worth the money. "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine your food" - Hippocrates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb herbal from a true Master Herbalist

This has quickly become my go to herbal. It doesn't tell you how to make herbal remedies - that info is easily available elsewhere. What it does give you is Matthew's depth of personal knowledge of the herbs as remedies from a lifetime's professional use plus his extensive researched knowledge. He shares all of this from a profound communication with the plants through knowing them as a herb grower and user while honouring their true gifts. It will change your prespective profoundly. If I could it would get 10 stars

Have read many many herbals, this might be the best one ever released. Along with a repertory by Matthew Wood, this book is brimming with useful info that works in practice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Erudite but so accessible, excellent writing; always full of the life, shape and signature of the plants.

Gave this book to my family doctor and a Reiki healer, who both read and pondered it and mentioned to me how much they got from reading it. Unlike old herbal books, this one is alive with the plants' vibrations.

I am very pleased with this book. Lots of practical information and deep wisdom from the plants. I like the way that Matthew Wood teaches and how he works with plants himself. Lots more information about plants and their attributes than other herbals

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read

I love Matthew Wood's gentle approach to working with herbs. His insights are very helpful. His style is one of openess and encouragement, he is not didactic. Just reading his words helped me to connect to the plants themselves. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good, because of the stories

c. · 8 May 2014

The writer, tells a lot about his personal experiences, also about some failures. He is a good story teller. I really feel that, we as humans, because of differences in personality, constitution and circumstances , react and need different healers/herbs etc. This book is more about intuition then, what seems logic at first glance. a bit like:nature against the machine

Enjoying

So far so good. You have to understand what your getting here, its not a list of plants with some simple line art, it's more to do with traditional historal plant information from the natives, shamans, and a lot of underlining metaphysical witchy aspects. It's what I was looking for but I can understand the confusion for some people looking for a direct list of medicinal herbs and physical uses.
