Description:

About this item:

Blast off into the unknown with this collection of ten classical works of science fiction and fantasy.

Long before we ventured into outer space or explored the most remote regions of the planet, writers have spun stories of what might lie in those unknown worlds, or what awaits humanity in the future.
Classic Tales of Science Fiction & Fantasy is a collection of ten novels and short stories that blazed the trail for the popular genre. Works by acclaimed authors such as Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jack London, and H. P. Lovecraft will transport the reader to distant places and times-and set the imagination ablaze!

About the Author

French writer Jules Verne (1828–1905) pioneered the science fiction literary genre. He published many plays, essays, short stories, and poems during his lifetime, but is best known for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days, and A Journey to the Center of the Earth. Today, he is one of the most translated authors in the world.

English author
H. G. Wells (1866–1946) is best known for his work in the science fiction genre. He was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics and social commentary, even writing text books and rules for war games.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American writer, best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter.

John Griffith "Jack" London (1876–1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and to amass a vast fortune from his fiction alone. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang.

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish physician and writer, most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major innovation in the field of crime fiction. He was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction.

It is difficult to find new, reasonably priced copies of the Canterbury Classics series. This is a used/acceptable copy of Classic Tales of Science Fiction and Fantasy including some of the best & iconic authors of the 19th & 20th Centuries. These are the authors who paved the way for the Science Fiction we have today. The book arrived within 2 days, well-packed in an Bolo shipping box. It is in good shape with only a couple of flaws: it had a handwritten dedication in the front cover, and the binding was separating a little from having been read. The dedication was a nice quote from Shakespeare which I am happy to leave there. And I simply took some binding tape and repaired that one loose area. The stories are indeed Classics that should be in every young person's library. There are no illustrations, so the book is more on a teenage to adult level. I would estimate the print to be about 8pt, so if you wear progressive eyeglasses, you might need a magnifier. Fortunately, this is a gift for a pre-teen boy, so his eyesight should be able to handle it.Since I ordered this book used, I was well aware that it would have flaws. That's why I went ahead and gave it 5 stars, since it is filled with great literature, arrived quickly with no problems, and it was in decent used condition as expected.

Fantastic book for a great price

One of the prettiest books from Canterbury Classics

This is another great looking leatherbound book from Canterbury Classics. In the introduction a summary is given of each of the ten stories in this book, together with information about the authors, which really adds to the value of this book. The pages are a pleasant cream white colour, and the font size is eazy to read. The ten stories this book contains are:-The Diamond Lens, by Fitz James O'Brien (1858)-A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, by Jules Verne (1864)-Looking Backward: 2000-1887, by Edward Bellamy (1888)-The War of the Worlds, by H. G. Wells (1897)-A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs (1912)-The Lost World, by Arthur Conan Doyle (1912)-The Scarlet Plague, by Jack London (1915)-Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1915)-Armageddon 2419 A.D., by Philip Francis Nowlan (1928)-The Dunwich Horror, by H. P. Lovecraft (1928)
