5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing, tense mystery exploring contemporary issues
I've been looking forward to reading The Redeemer, which was given an honourable mention in the Capital Crime/DHH Literary Agency New Voice Awards 2019, for some time. It's the first book in the Shanna Regan series and what an excellent introduction it is.Shanna is a journalist but despite previously having a career which saw her travelling the world, she is now living in Hillsbury, a fictional small town in Hertfordshire, where she has recently started working for local magazine, Hillsbury Living. At the start of the book, she witnesses a distressing racist attack on a Jewish woman but despite her reporter's instinct for a story, the victim, Valerie, is clearly too afraid to take the incident any further. However, her visit to Valerie's house does at least give her some material for the piece she is writing about historical plaques for the magazine. She discovers that as well as the well-known blue plaques that are erected to commemorate notable local figures, there are others which bear a more malicious message. The mystery behind these plaques isn't the only source of danger in The Redeemer and this compulsively plotted novel radiates a menacing sense of tension. One of most important themes explored is the anti-Semitism experienced by the Jewish community; there are overt incidences here but also the more insidious examples of prejudice that may not be as immediately threatening but are ultimately as damaging. Victoria Goldman cleverly weaves information about the beliefs and customs of Jewish people into the plot allowing readers to learn alongside Shanna. I am drawn to fiction that teaches me something without detracting from the narrative and The Redeemer does exactly that.Hillsbury might not be a real place but it never feels anything less than entirely convincing. One of the most moving elements of the book for me is that although onlookers might point to an integrated community where small businesses such as bakeries and kosher butchers have thrived, Shanna realises the more sombre truth that any gathering of Jews is a potential target. This isn't a particularly violent novel but there are a few chilling scenes which expose the hatred that consumes some people. As with all the best mysteries, the complex storyline abounds with red herrings and potential leads, and the first-rate characterisation throughout ensured I was never short of people to suspect. Meanwhile, Shanna's personal life is equally as fascinating; she is a beautifully written character and the disclosures regarding both her recent past and her childhood add further layers of interest to proceedings. I'm delighted that this is to be a series because she is a character I am already keen to know more about. The nail-biting conclusion to this mystery kept me awake, turning the pages until the early hours and the twists and turns kept me guessing throughout; I was genuinely surprised by some of the revelations and thrilled by the ending which sets up the next instalment in the series, perfectly. The Redeemer is an intriguing, tense mystery exploring contemporary issues, it offers a fascinating, authentic insight into Jewish culture and is a gripping read. Crime fiction is ideally placed to examine contemporary issues – but to be truly authentic it needs diverse own voice thrillers such as this. I highly recommend it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfying read. Bring on book two.
The Redeemer was my very first Jewish mystery, and that alone made it worth picking up. As someone who has read a lot of thrillers, I'm always looking for stories that offer something different than the tried-and-tested storylines a lot of authors in the genre draw from (there's only so many gruesome serial murders and / or missing vulnerable people and / or evil killers with personal grudges against tormented detectives I can take before I need a break). The Redeemer's focus on a culture, religion and historical background that don't make it into mystery plots often fit the bill perfectly. At the same time, its close-knit Jewish community is based in the UK, so I could find many familiar elements too. It was a very easy book to warm up to and get drawn in by.There was a lot about the protagonist Shanna Regan that I could relate to personally. Most of all, her nomadic upbringing, her struggle to put down roots, and the curiosity that drives her to dig deeper into her new surroundings and the people around her. I quickly got invested in the relationships she built with some of the other characters, which makes me even happier a sequel is in the works, because it means I may get to find out how they develop. The twists are very well done and had me guessing until the end. While I did pick up some of the right clues about characters that could be involved in the crimes, and about Shanna's personal connection to the case, I couldn't connect every single dot, and had to wait until the very end for the full picture to be revealed. Even though I had my suspicions about the author of the crimes early on, each of the main characters is developed in a way that leaves enough room for doubt, and some of the theories I'd developed that I could swear I could back up with real plot points even ended up being wrong. I found it very satisfying. Bring on book two, I'm already looking forward to it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Well written and intriguing, with an unexpected twist at the end
Very enjoyable read from an author I had not encountered before. Interesting incorporation of the Jewish lifestyle that was new to me. The storyline was well constructed and kept moving , although the number of characters introduced meant that I had to do mental recaps in order to remember who was connected to who. Overall, very enjoyable read.
3.0 out of 5 stars A dark, twisty thriller with a contemporary edge
The Redeemer is a smart, exciting blend of crime mystery, revenge ethics and modern-day antisemitism. The story is compelling and the contemporary setting both convincing and unsettling, especially because its darker moments have been inspired by real-life events. An accomplished debut, driven by a tough, likeable heroine who you end up wanting to join on her future adventures. Congrats Victoria Goldman!
5.0 out of 5 stars excellent read
Great reading this engaging thriller. Well written and full of intriguing tales. Dipping into and out of Jewish life and traditions whilst investigating multiple murders. Very exciting and gets to a end without leaving you hanging on for the next book! Highly recommended

From the first word you had me hooked. A very enjoyable read set at just the right pace to get to know the characters. You will not want to put it down once you start reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and turns….most enjoyable
This is really a 4.5 star rating !Didn’t realise that the story would become so compelling.Read nearly 200 pages in one sitting and really didn’t want to leave it at that point.Interesting characterisation and an unusual plot line.Would never imagine it would end up where it did and I would read a follow up in a minute. As I live in the area on which the novel is based on and have fine for 40 years I had no idea that the village had such an exciting history !Well done Vicky, a most compelling read.
Fantastic Gripping Unique Thriller
The Redeemer is a gripping tale leading you down a tense rabbit hole towards a conclusion you will be desperate to figure out after just the first page. Goldman takes the classic journalist heroine and really makes her own stamp on this genre in two distinct ways: strong characters and a distinct setting.Shanna Regan is an easy to root for MC with multiple layers and a strong determination that is crucial for the rabbit hole she finds herself in! It’s Shanna, and others, whose progress and growth is just as much worth following as the mystery itself. I also really appreciate the distinct setting and depiction of the Jewish neighborhood. It grounded the entire story and gave it even more impressive layers. A must read for thriller lovers!
Gripping read
"The redeemer" makes a gripping read, I finished it during vacation in one day lying on a sunbed. I am not one to repeat the content and I don't want to spoiler. So all I say: it makes a fine crime story, and it tells a lot of normal day jewish life. The only thing Victoria Goldman left unanswered in the end, after all is revealed and the murderer unveiled: get the two "angelic boys" oft the side threadpunished for their bullying? I sincerely hope so!I recommend this book to crime readers who also like a bit of background, community, history or religious. And look forward to the next Shanna-Regan-Book.
The detail is amazing --
Liked this book a lot. Great detail, excellent plot with great historical relevance included. Supr twist at the end as well --I liked it enough to purchase the second book, The Associate.
Wonderful Read
Victoria Goldman deserves much acclaim for writing such an incredible book. The characters leapt from the pages and took on life in my imagination as I read. The heroine is a worthy star for a long series of books. Her supporting cast all played their roles perfectly. The villains are written perfectly for the roles they played.I enjoyed reading it all even as I flinched at the villains crimes I cheered for Shanna and was amazed at her courage though fictional it was still inspiring.I look forward to reading more books in this series.
The Redeemer
The Redeemer by Victoria Goldman is an excellent read.I learned quite a bit about Jewish culture. There were no cliches in the figurative language used by the author . I call it intelligent, skilled writing. Some great foreshadowing as well. I'm glad I read this book and I reading for Mrs Goldman's next bokk!
