5.0 out of 5 stars Bird by bird - taking things one step at a time
Bird by Bird is not just a book on writing, it’s a delightful journey into the heart and soul of the craft. Anne Lamott, with her wit and wisdom, creates an atmosphere that is both instructive and profoundly entertaining. At its core, the book is a psychological guide for aspiring writers. Lamott encourages authenticity, urging writers to pen down their true thoughts and feelings. She emphasizes the importance of being grounded, dismissing the illusion that writing is a quick path to success or riches. Writing, as she points out, is a means of self-expression, a way to connect with readers on a deeply personal level. Whether portraying the beauty or the ugliness of the world, Lamott suggests that being a genuine writer is a rare and fortunate vocation. The title - Bird by Bird reflects Lamott’s approach to writing and life: taking things one step at a time, facing challenges gradually, and persevering through the process. This metaphorical advice is not only applicable to writing but also serves as a life lesson for tackling any daunting task or goal.
5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and insightful
This is such a gem of a book. I am half way through and enjoying every page. She writes beautifully and with so much self awareness but not piously, it’s a joy to read. It is also ‘about’ writing, and will give you top tips on that too.
4.0 out of 5 stars Notes on Writing and Life
This book was flagged up in two other books I had recently read, so I decided to give it a go. Although it is mainly about how to write, it also includes nuggets of the author’s wisdom on all sorts of topics.Anne Lamont has an easy, fluid and often humorous style of writing that carries you along. She doesn’t mind what she says; some of her revelations don’t paint her in the best light. However, you know she’s genuine. She also has some good tips for getting into writing. Two key points: just keep writing something every day, whether it’s good quality or not, and break your writing down into chunks, so that you’re not overwhelmed. An entertaining, at times irreverent, but interesting book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I came across a recommendation for this book while searching for help with my own avoidance of writing. If you're a writer who won't write, if you've tried every productivity trick and nothing works, maybe this is the book for you.I understand now that I'm part of a select club, a group of people compelled to produce things they will never be happy with, a people who are miserable when writing and even more so when not.Anne has shown me that there isn't anything about me that needs to be fixed. And when I feel myself forgetting this I will come back and read it again.
5.0 out of 5 stars Profound wisdom cleverly wrapped up in humour
Anne has done so much deep thinking on this topic, and shared every last detail with generosity and humour.Really enjoyed this book. It really does tell you everything you will find useful to know about the process of writing, including why we do it in the first place. It's so funny that you can easily overlook the fact that while you've been enjoying the read, you've also been swallowing great chunks of wisdom about writing and even life in general. The book is also unusual in that it also discusses what happens when you finally achieve that Golden Grail of being published. What does that change, and what doesn't it change, and how should we prepare for those highs and lows?I'm so glad I read this.

Great insight in the creative process
5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerising
A practical guide to writing, but so wonderfully written you'll be unable to put it down. Funny, thought provoking, intense but enthralling. Can't think of enough adjectives to describe how great this book is. Just read it, it will make you want to write.
4.0 out of 5 stars Honest. Funny. Helpful
This seems to be a very open and honest account of the author's writing life. It is, at times, laugh-out-loud hilarious (intentionally). It also gives some good, realistic, advice about writing.
Best advice this writer ever got!
If only I head read it sooner. Annie's wit and candid approach is refreshing. Head smacking, fun read, fun as audio as well.
Excellent description of the writing process. For writers and wannabe's
Anne Lamott is an excellent writer and story teller.
Different approach
This books showed me a somehow different attitude towards writing. It was not only about the techniques but mostly about how to approach writing. I loved it a lot! I am now reading it for the second time :)
un excelente libro
Lo leí y marqué algunos pasajes, y vuelvo a releerlos porque resumen muy bien dudas existenciales que trascienden culturas. Muy recomendable.
Will make you want to write!
