Review

It will come as no surprise that social media and the inclination to compare our lives' to others is having a malign effect on humans. But it might be slightly more alarming to discover that it's not just bringing us down but rewiring our behavioural patterns. Read this book and then carve out some for room yourself and your brain.

A insightful book confronting and discussing some very real issues with the social state of the world and what these advances in social media have bought to the world and homes. Also written by a humble, beautifully down to earth woman (from what I see on Instagram)

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't let Social Media win! Bring back verbal communication!

The explanation of what Social Media is doing, particularly to children, teenagers and young adults, and how it works was most disturbing and a sad indictment of how far we have travelled towards being ruled by mass media and machines. A fascinating book.

Not too bad but more relevant to people who are obsessed with social media or need to use it regularly as part of their job. Will not be so beneficial to people who use social media in moderation

4.0 out of 5 stars Oi! Put yer phone down!

On finishing this survey of the digital state we are in, I felt chilled to the bone. I almost felt like I had read a sci-fi dystopia, except, this is a description of where we are now.Something, it seems, has happened to our brains and our reason. We are now needy, addcited creatures, unable to put our phones down even if our jobs or sanity depends on it. We scroll and scroll looking for the next instant dopamine hit that a 'like' validation gives us, or are sent into a tailspin if somehow, our social media platform gives us a dissaproving signal. The writer is a journalist and 'social media influencer' in her own right and is a regular panellist on shows like Good Morning and Women's Hour. So she knows her digital onions. In a substantial introduction she lays out her stall. Social media is a tool for good things but it has been warped into something that is harmful and we are cultivating harmful habits, worrying excessively after seeing endless photos of ideal physiques on Instagram etc and idealised happy families having wonderful holidays on the beach. Why aren't our lives like that? Ms Ormerod patiently outlines how these images are carefully curated and sometimes literally airbrushed. All the messy stuff of life is being filtered out. Our choices, in all areas of life, are being hopelessly distorted, or have the potential to be unless we change our scrolling ways. This is not a book about deleting social media accounts as in Jason Larnier's "10 reasons why you must delete your social media accounts right now," its not about taking that all or nothing approach. Rather it is about managing our social media use and intake. This is also a very heavily gendered viewpoint, as the introduction makes clear. "It's a woman's world," as one sub-heading tells us. And case studies and life experiences described are nearly exclusively female. Fair enough, but it would have been helpful if the book had been more clearly marketed? The title and blurb make it sound more generic than it is.The writer then covers how social media ruins Identity, Body Image, Health, relationships, Motherhood, Career and Money, and Politics. There are some excellent points made, and the writer seems eminently sensible and 'sorted' in her approach. Occasionally it veers into clueless millennials first world problems territory:"I sent that cute guy on Tinder a risqué photo of me! I don't know him, but nevertheless I am appalled when he shares it without my permission!" An Epilogue gives some scary thoughts about how things are going: social messaging bots that send automatic, nuanced replies to individual messages, immersive VR social media platforms; as if we weren't ignoring 'the real' enough already.Recommended, and much needed but please heed my point about the gendered perspective and misleading marketing.

21st Century MUST-Read

One of my favorite journalists recommended this book via her Instagram (ironic), so I automatically when onto Bolo to purchase. I am not able to put Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life down since I got it. I will be the first to admit I am addicted to my phone and social media. This book has really left me in shock of how damaging platforms like Instagram really are. I have become so much more mindful of how I am using my phone now and how I develop my relationship -- with myself and with others. Not only is this book incredibly important because of its message, but it is also well written. Ormerod has an incredible talent and ability to use a fun, relevant voice to discuss something that is diminishing our quality of life. This is a must-read for anyone who feels like their online presence has taken over their life. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Interesting reading

I don’t think I’m the primary target of this book. Although there are some interesting insights and research, I think this book is paramount for the ones who work with social media - specifically influencers. I agree with everything said in this book. Social media can ruin your life, not to even mention that according to statistics, we spend in average 7 years on our phones during our whole life. That’s a lot. I’m a “victim” of the effects social media can have in your life but understand and breaking the addictive behavior is a first good step. Found utterly interesting how social media can shape our thoughts and life - especially women - due the amount of vitriol installed in these platforms. The comparison we unconsciously or consciously do when we scroll down our feeds is toxic and that’s why I believe we should limit our time on social media as much as we can.

The Preview Was Short but Amazing!
