5.0 out of 5 stars Triple AAA read for an 'Alien' obsessive...

S. · 1 October 2024

I was a little disappointed when I received this book, no artwork, no illustrations, no maps, but I was really missing the point about what is, in fact, a spectacularly good read for an alien obsessed, canon completist, such as myself. I will he buying 'The art of alien isolation' very soon after completing this excellent and informative read. Since this book was written, Alien Isolation has been incorporated into canon by the excellent Alien Romulus, and the nods to the game in set design are unmistakeable, especially the telephone 'save points' which appear before things go rapidly wrong for the hapless stars of the movie. I digress. Alien Isolation is quite simply one of the best video game experiences ever created, and for a world fan, like me, thought provoking manna from heaven. Best Sci-Fi game, best horror game, best survival game, best stealth game, tick, tick, tick, tick, and this book has it all, for those that want to know it all. The love of the author for his subject matter shines right through, from page one, to the excellent further reading, associated articles, and appendix. I really, really enjoyed reading this book, every word, and like the game, I know that I will be revisiting this work on a regular basis. Bravo Andy Kelly, in creating 'the perfect organism'. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great read and companion to a great game

Like the author, Mr. Kelly, I too am a huge fan of all things Alien, be it movie, book, comic or game. From cover to cover you can see he has carried out he research meticulously and even though I haven’t played the game since lockdown reading this book took me right back into the game as if I’d only played it last week.I really enjoyed reading about how some of the original movie sets were created and how the game creators used some archive props from the movie, as blueprints to recreate authentic sets and objects within the game. The book provides loads of insightful information and snippets from various interviews with the game creators over the years and delves into some of the background lore of this great franchise. There is a chapter on the many Alien games from the 80’s through the 90’s to the latest game from last year, and there were some real duffers. I know because I think I played almost every one of them too. There is a very long section devoted to each mission in the game which tells the story, mission by mission, almost like a novelisation of the game which is fab to read. But don’t read it if you haven’t played the game and it is on your “to play” list as it does contain some information better learned whilst plying the game. It is not a walkthrough of the game, it is telling the story rather than showing how to play.Overall a great read, especially for a fan like me. Well done Andy on a fantastic book. It’s a YES from me!

4.0 out of 5 stars A love letter by the author to a great game.

The writer who worked for a number of games publications, details his love for this particular game. He goes into a large amount of detail on how the game was made, including lots of Easter eggs to the source material that was the original film Alien (1979). It is a companion book to the game but avoids giving away too many spoilers, and the mission guide focuses on the story rather than provide hints and tips (you have to go online for those). He also includes sections on cut content, the DLC, and potential future life for the game.If you love the game as well the book gives you many interesting insights into how careful Creative Assembly were in creating an authentic entry into the Alien Universe.Sadly, I only gave it four stars as it is solely text, and there are no illustrations, screen grabs, photos etc to accompany the text which would have been nice given the price. A section on hints and tips would have also been great, although with the caveat that it might spoil a ten year old game that most fans would have played.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for Alien Isolation fans

Written by a true fan of one of the best horror video games ever made. Full of trivia and insights into the development of this modern day classic. Absolutely love this companion piece

5.0 out of 5 stars Alien Isolation

A great, insightful read into one of the greatest and tragically underappreciated videogames ever made. The writer's passion for the game and the universe shines through and as a fan it only took 2 sittings to finish it. Not only an interesting behind the scenes summary but also a nice runthrough of the game in the later chapters. A great purchase for any alien universe fan, and if you loved Alien Isolation, a definite must have.
