4.0 out of 5 stars A good read

A good read, I was able to work out who it was quite early on but that didn't distract from the story as there was a lot going on in the background

5.0 out of 5 stars As described

Arrived next day, quality of the book as stated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicely written

Sadly this didn't grip me as much as I hoped/expected but it is worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining whodunnit

A.C. · 9 April 2024

The Murder Game is a classic whodunnit locked room murder mystery. In a small town on the Exmoor coast, a group of people have gathered in a remote hotel for an evening of fine dining and fun. But before their game has begun one of their number is murdered, and focus switches from unmasking a pretend murderer to identifying a real one - and staying alive until help arrives. The couples all booked the evening individually, but in such a small community there are many things that link them, not least two tragic incidents from the past. And almost all have a potential motive for this night's murder.Unusually for me I figured out who the murderer was fairly early on, but it isn't so easy to work out why they were driven to such desperate measures. Disappointingly, part of the plot does depend on the rather lazy device of a corrupt town hall planner who allows the planning permission for a site to be stolen from a community project. A modicum of research would have revealed that this is simply not a thing - it would have made more sense for a property purchase to have been gazumped. A minor niggle, but it jarred a little. That aside, it's a cleverly plotted story, with many twists and turns and a satisfying conclusion. The Murder Game is an entertaining mystery with a colourful cast of characters and plenty of intrigue that is slowly revealed as the plot unwinds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agatha Christie eat your heart out!

Exceptionally well written, well paced, good old fashioned whodunnit murder mystery. I highly recommend to any fans of Agatha Christie or Midsommer Murders.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty readable, but not much depth…

H.H. · 20 February 2023

Impressive cover design, adorned with glowing quotes, prominent in many a bookshop window, this ticks a lot of boxes for lovers of the ‘golden age’ of crime fiction, and unsurprisingly has been compared to Agatha Christie. Such hyperbole always strikes me as a bit desperate - if a book is so good it should be able to stand on its own feet as it were. And this is quite good, it rolls along in a very page- turning way, with a helpful list of characters cleverly set out before the action properly begins. What’s not to like? I’d say the main thing is the lack of depth and development of any of the characters…we get The Ambitious One, The Cad, The Disturbed One, The Social Climber etc (these headings can be applied to more than one character) but not there’s not much in the way of probing their more complex thoughts and emotions; what you see is what you get….at no point does the author confide much more to the reader. As a result it’s more like watching a play than reading a book. While 4 stars would too generous, 3 stars seems a little bit mean….it’s more like 3.5, and it does sail along albeit on rather shallow waters. If you want a page turner without much in the way of meaningful social commentary, tortured philosophising, or political posturing spoiling the fun, it will probably do nicely. I certainly don’t regret getting it, but would approach his next effort cautiously.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow in the begining

C. · 30 September 2024

It was slow to begin ,but it did perk up half way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I’ve ever read

B. · 23 October 2023

I would have never picked this book up if it wasn’t for it being chosen as the book of the month for my works book club, but oh my I couldn’t put this book down. It’s just fantastic. Every page is a new & clever spanner in the works just to make sure you have no idea who is the murderer until the final reveal. I would 100% recommend this book to ANYONE and it was a pleasure to read. I’ve already put a fatal crossing on my Xmas list and will be pre ordering a murder on lake Garda. New fave author⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All the things will be cleared in the last 20% pages. Good to read but you need to keep your full attention in the first 80% part of this book. And then everything is coming up in front of you.
