A Different Way to Learn: Neurodiversity and Self-Directed Education

Description:

About this item:

'If you are a parent worrying whether self-directed education will work for your child, because you have been told that they have special needs which can only be met in the school system - think again'

Neurodivergent children experience and interact with the world differently to many of their peers. Standard educational systems often fail to adapt to their unique strengths and ways of learning. School, and even the act of learning, can become a source of great anxiety and trauma. Self-directed education offers an alternative to traditional schools that can help neurodivergent children develop at their own pace and thrive.

Blending theory, practical advice and lived experience, clinical psychologist Naomi Fisher introduces the world of self-directed learning and tailoring the learning environment to your child.

This comprehensive overview of self-directed learning is packed with ideas on how to implement it at home and includes interviews from parents of neurodivergent children on how you can make learning differently work for you and your child

Review

With Changing Our Minds Naomi Fisher established herself as the voice of reason in a sea of misinformation about an education system in existential crisis. This new book cements her reputation as a champion of young people's rights by giving a voice to those who are most impacted and yet too often silenced. -- Artemis D. Bear, Head of Freedom to Learn & Director of The Garden

A really important book giving a platform to the many SEND families who have been largely unheard in the education debate. As always Naomi offers us a fresh perspective on intersection of neurodiversity, learning and environment.
A must read for anyone interested in education, psychology or the wonderful diversity of humanity. Highly recommended. -- Kezia Cantwell-Wright, BA Hons, Founder of East Kent Sudbury, Administrator at Sands School

In "A Different Way To Learn" Naomi Fisher builds on the scientific base of her earlier work "Changing Our Minds."
She illuminates routes to self-directed learning that are effective in eliminating the coercion and anxiety generated by much conventional 'schooling.' I wish that I had read this book before becoming a parent and a teacher! She is a passionate voice for all children not just those defined as neuro-diverse. -- Derry Hannam, retired Deputy Headteacher, Inspector, international campaigner/researcher for Student Voice - author of 'Another Way Is Possible: Becoming a Democratic Teacher in a State School

Everyone knows the mainstream education system doesn't work for everyone, but most people don't realise there is an alternative.
In this invaluable book, Naomi Fisher guides us through the world of self-directed education. It should be required reading for all educators, young people and their parents and carers - anyone who has ever wondered if another way is possible. Because it's not just possible. It's already happening... -- Dr James Mannion, Director, Rethinking Education and co-author of Fear is the Mind Killer with Kate McAllister

Thank you for writing this book. It has given me some ideas to try and also lots of reassurance I am doing the right things for my little boy and to take a step back and let him take the lead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally I know how to deal with my child's aversion to school

This book is amazing! After months of CAMHs, private therapists, psychiatrists, all manner of services, being very little help and shedding very little insight into what is eating my daughter and how to help her when she can't articulate what is going on for her, this book is a complete game changer. Where there was no road map of how to navigate this, Naomi Fisher has written this crucial book that reflects very clearly what is going wrong for so many children in our education system and how to help them. Thank you so very much Naomi.

So thankful for this brilliantly articulated book for when your child doesn’t ‘fit the system’ and a hopeful outlook for an alternative path.

I have a five year old who can't manage school and school can't manage him. This book is so fitting for us and being able to find some affirmation feels like a lifeline has been thrown out to us. I will still worry about the future though as school is the norm for me having two older children go through the schooling system. Home ed, self directed learning is new for us.

This book has solidified my home education journey decision. With its focus on neuro divergent children, the book challenges the whole education system when it comes to learning.I'm neurospicy as are my 5 children, 4 of which attended school & are now in their 30s.With my surprise child at 42 I embraced home schooling after her 3 yrs in school, where she repeatedly came home exhausted, complaining that her heart hurt. She was out when she finished yr2. As a mature mum, I'd done the schooling fights over my lad who has ADHD. The whole school experience messed him.up, I wasn't going to do this again!. Anyhow, this book has validated my child led approach, it really does work!

Enjoyed reading this book!

I got this book after seeing a review on one of my Facebook groups. I really enjoyed this book. Helps me understand the child lead learning path much more while I am on my journey of unschooling with my Neurodivergent kiddos.

Excellent resource

Very good book

This is a fantastic read. Naomi Fisher is a fantastic author and writes in such a thought provoking way. Her other book “changing our minds” is fab too.

Not for everyone (even in the family)

M. · 15 November 2023

This is a book of stories about how Moms (there is no mention of Dads at all) with a very lot of time and patience may be able to find pathways that works for their particular atypical child. It did help me understand many aspects about how my autistic granddaughter may best be understood and helped. However, the book offers little or no science about the effectiveness of the recommendations. Also, it offers no observations at all about the damage that could be done when other family members Jo - that would or could be successful at regular schools - are put into unschooled or self directed environments. This worries me fir the two siblings of my aforementioned grand daughter.

Brilliant!

Such a valuable read! It’s both realistic and reassuring. Great for homeschoolers, parents of ND individuals and teachers!
