5.0 out of 5 stars Heart warming

This book is just lovely. It is well written, humorous and a real page-turner. I bought a copy for my son but ended up reading it myself, I couldn't help it! If you enjoyed Enid Blyton books you would like this. If you didn't like Enid Blyton books you would like this, as would your daughter, son, niece, nephew, friend, neighbour, cousin, did I mention grandchildren? Good for ages 9 and up but can be enjoyed by adults too, especially if you went to boarding school or ever wondered what it could be like. And hey, I'm not the author (honest), I just really loved the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting boarding school story

W.M. · 26 June 2024

My daughter (8) recognises familiar experiences like playing Red Rover Red Rover - Ride Over Ride Over in Nigeria - and is fascinated by the different foods mentioned in the story and the different experiences of boarding school compared to her day school. I love the recognisable phrases like ‘in hot soup’, ‘Johnny just come’ and ‘I smell a bush rat’. Story is good - mentions in passing but doesn’t explain periods, which my daughter doesn’t know about yet, so that has sparked a conversation.

Fun school story with a message

B.D. · 5 December 2022

Jummy at the River School is a delightful story about Jumoke Afolabi (Jummy) who leaves primary school to attend the somewhat prestigious River Boarding School for Girls. Here Jummy is put in a dorm in her ‘house’ - Nile House - with mixed ages. She meets a cast of exuberant characters with whom she becomes a loyal friend. She also makes an enemy: the spoilt, rich, freeloading Bolaji. Bolaji and Jummy come head to head over Jummy’s childhood friend, Caro who, despite academic aptitude, cannot afford to attend the school. Jummy distinguishes herself from Bolaji by helping Caro, learning to work hard, and even participate in the school sports day. More than a fun school story, Jummy at the River School is a story about giving fair access to education.
