The characters we have come to know and love from the first 3 books continue to develop in this story so it should definitely not be read as a standalone book. The children and their cases are new and we also meet new officers in the course of the investigation.I think the descriptions of Sabre's work are interesting, and the detailed investigations are fascinating. I love the way Teresa tantalises us with new information about the characters - no spoiler alert required - read it for yourself!

Sabre is a lawyer who specializes in children's advocacy. She carries out her work with expertise and with passionate determination on behalf of those who may have no other defenders. But when her duty to a client conflicts with her attempt to insure that her best friend isn't tried for murder, she is faced with a dilemma.I found the scenes involving the legal advocacy the most convincing - even without looking at the author information, it was obvious that she is experienced in this field and the her hero shares her views on the wrongs done to children. The lawyers were believable, as were the dysfunctional familes. JP the investigator was amusing. But the policeman was a cardboard figures. We kept reading what a good investigator he was, yet he was putting together a case based on tenuous circumstantial . . . well, evidence is too strong a word.Still it was an entertaining read that kept me guessing right to the end. I'd certainly consider reading more by Teresa Burrell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another triumph

Another fabulous and unpredictable story from Teresa Burrell. Keeps you wondering right to the very end. The way the author writes, you can't help but get immersed in the story, feel like you know the main characters, and feel empathy for them. Real life scenarios (sadly) have you rooting for the good guys and loathing the bad, but leaves you unsure which side certain characters belong to, which kept me hooked! Only my second Teresa Burrell novel but certainly not my last :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another captivating book in the series.

The book is very well written as previous books in the Advocate series. The storyline flows from chapter to chapter and keeps you captivated from the beginning to the end.

Wonderful twists

I apparently got this book several years ago and it got lost in my Kindle list until I read another book in the series and got sucked in. I apologize to the author that my review is so late. The author is very skilled at writing in a way that small details that cinch the case are presented somewhat early on so casually they don't stand out. Out of the 5 books I've read in this series, I'm running a 50% rate of having it solved before the midpoint. I'm a retired RN and edit time to time now, so I'm quite detailed. And even if I figure out who, I'm not always catching the how or why until it's explained at the end. I really like that. :-) It keeps me engaged. So the story itself may need a bit of a trigger warning in this day and age. The main minor clients that Sabre represents go thru some very traumatic things. First, molestation. Second, attempted suicide. If you're sensitive to those themes, read this on a strong day or hold it until you have support. The themes are well crafted, compassionate, and justice prevails.Once again, I love the characters. They are well fleshed out in present and with their background stories. Mannerisms I noted in previous books were explained by a shared back story in this book. I like the author's ability to portray those characteristics without explaining them too soon. It's more realistic and believable.JPisms make me smile. I love Bob's sarcasm. I'm impressed with Sabre's ability to care for her client's well being after finding out they did something terrible. The plot and subplots and carried plot points from previous books in the series are balanced and expertly woven together to create a very intriguing escape from any mundane existence. Just be prepared to see the dark side, it's not fluffed and coated in sugar for the Advocate, but that doesn't stop it from going down easy.I definitely recommend this series for mature enough audiences (high school to adult in my opinion due to the themes I highlighted above).

Great read.

This is the fourth in The Advocate series, and is a really great installment to the story of lawyer, Sabre Brown. Her relationships with her best friend Bob, and her investigator, JP, are engaging and fun to watch, and the twist at the end was really a surprise. I highly recommend this book.

THE ADVOCATE'S DILEMMA

J.W. · 29 August 2016

I really am enjoying the Advocate Series. Teresa Burrell is such a great writer. Saber Brown represents children who find themselves needing car and protection, often from their own parents. Drugs, thieving and all manner of bad happenings are everyday occurrences. Sabre is placed in an emotional situation. Minor client confidentiality means she cannot divulge information to help clear a colleague's name when he is arrested for murder. Very clever story lines. This book does not disappoint.
