The Flower Boat Girl: A novel based on a true story of the woman who became the most powerful pirate in history

Description:

About this item:

Her father traded away her youth.
Sea bandits stole her freedom.
She has one way to get them back:
Become the most powerful pirate in the world.

South China coast, 1801. Sold as a child to a floating brothel, 26-year-old Yang has finally bought her freedom, only to be kidnapped by a brutal pirate gang and forced to marry their leader.

Dragged through stormy seas and lawless bandit havens, Yang must stay scrappy to survive. She embeds herself in the dark business of piracy, carving out her role against the resistance of powerful pirate leaders and Cheung Po Tsai, her husband's flamboyant male concubine.

As she is caught between bitter rivals fighting for mastery over the pirates—and for her heart—Yang faces a choice between two things she never dreamed might be hers: power or love.

Based on a true story that has never been fully told until now, The Flower Boat Girl is the tale of a woman who, against all odds, shaped history on her own terms.

Review

"A breathtaking saga of a real life heroine, so richly alive that the pages seem to breathe."

Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author(Pictures of You, Cruel Beautiful World)

"A vivid and often compelling adventure with a sweeping, cinematic feel."

Kirkus

"A simply riveting read from first page to last."

Midwest Book Review

"Fast-paced plotting, evocative prose and attention to detail ... Will satisfy lovers of thoughtful historical fiction."

BookLife from Publisher's Weekly

"One cannot mention historical fiction set in the early 19th-century South China Sea without bringing to mind James Clavell's Tai-Pan. Feign's work bears comparison both in its historical and geographical sweep, as well as in its readability and attention to regional historical detail."

Susan Blumberg-Kason, Asian Review of Books

"The Flower Boat Girl is historical fiction at its best. Once picked up, this novel will be hard to put down."

Dian Murray, historian and author of Pirates of the South China Coast

"Convincingly renders Cheng's stranger-than-fiction trajectory to pirate royalty, punctuated by ripe Cantonese profanity."

South China Morning Post

"I can't think of a novel I've enjoyed reading more than I enjoyed this one."

Mary Helen Stefaniak, award-winning author(The Turk and My Mother; The Cailiffs of Baghdad, Georgia)

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars — An epic and fascinating read; beautifully written

K.P.I. · 13 August 2022

An epic and fascinating read - and extremely well written. Immerses the reader in the pirate world of the South China seas in the early 1800s, offering an intriguing plot alongside a wealth of cultural and geographical detail. The writer has clearly done his research! Some of the names are hard to keep up with — and some of the raids and journeys merged with one another — but I let that wash over me eventually and just absorbed the moment. (Reading it in stages due to other commitments probably didn't help!) Excellent if you like historical fiction / epic saga. The fact that it's based on a true story makes it all the more intriguing. I could picture this as a movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it. A well told tale.

This is a great read. Vividly brings to life a little known piece of South China coast history, told from the point of view of the "bad guys", of a time before Hong Kong was Hong Kong and when its outlying islands were the lair of pirate fleets. I loved it. A well told tale with an unforgettable heroine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Piracy in the South (China) Sea

S.E.H. · 10 July 2021

A brilliant, uncompromising story of a life of piracy, with no Sea Hawk glamour - hunger, shipwreck and treachery are perpetual threats. The Flower Boat Girl (a cheap prostitute) has to navigate her way through a life controlled by men who are less intelligent and less ambitious than she is; Feign sympathetically shows her growth, as she learns to want something better - and to get it. Thorough research underlies a fine adventure story and creates a convincing world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Story of a long forgotten and amazing powerful woman

S.L.C. · 7 December 2023

I first heard about this Chinese pirate who started out life as a prostitute flower boat girl on a Radio 4 documentary. Having never heard of her before I read the recommended book which was apparently based on facts and fascinating. Every bit as powerful as Gengis Khan or Napoleon and yet, as a woman, her story was buried in history. Testament how, despite lip service to the contrary, we still live in a misogynist world!!

A fascinating story that reveals the influence of the South China Sea Pirates

R.G. · 2 April 2024

I was drawn to this book because of my career experiences in Asia and my interest in history. Many of the places described were places that I had visited, and during those visits heard and saw snippets about the pirates. The story line is also a precursor to the Opium Wars that set Asia on a collision course with the West, and I wanted to try to fill in some of the blanks in my knowledge of the times.Even though the book is a fictional novel, it is heavily influenced by people and events that did exist. This story did not disappoint!! The descriptions and story line are captivating and lead to one's imagination in grand scope of how everything looked and felt. Some have mentioned in other reviews that many of these events are too detailed or violent, but I disagree profoundly as the tenor of the story is dependent upon detailed (and sometimes beautiful and sensuous) descriptions. If you are expecting a Disney fantasy, don't buy this book- it is gritty, honest and as far as I know from my knowledge of the times and the area, an accurate portrayal.I anxiously away the sequel to learn how the Pirate Queen manages her newly acquired fleet. If the book is like The Flower Boat Girl, I will have difficulty putting it down until the read is complete. To summarize, this is a fantastic story, well-written and I highly recommend it!!
