    Chewy goodness!

The flavor of this black licorice is heaven! I love eraser textured chewiness and this hits the spot! I have purchased two cases of this since I discovered it and you can't get a better deal than they have here on Bolo. You honestly get triple the amount for the price. I gave it four stars instead of five because the first time I ordered it was during the heat of the summer and it was a little bit too soft and the last time I bought it it was strangely a little more rubbery then I like. All in all, I like the texture both times but would have preferred a more happy medium between the two. I will definitely be buying it again but I am scared to have it in my house because I can't put it down!

    Real Black Licorice

This is real black licorice, not like what is made in America anymore. Panda is also another good brand, and some others made outside the USA. As the American manufacturers improved their product it became clear to me that ment they improved the profit margin at the expense of their product. Even Triscuit original crackers were improved. After I bought some of the improved ones I quit buying them too. KFC is another that I stay away from most of the time because the chicken doesn't taste the same to me as it did before being sold back in the 60's or early 70's. Of course this, is only my opinion. I have read that KFC was tested and only salt, pepper, and MSG was in the chicken, along with the oil of course. I don't know if that is the truth, but to me it doesn't taste like it did. I've talked to others who remember how it tasted before being sold. Our cars went the same way until most people started buying foreign cars. Darrell's black licorice is a quality product and would have been great even when some of America's licorice makers were a lot better. If what I read about KFC's chicken not having the 11 herbs and spices as the Original Recipe, (at least in detectable amounts) they should not be aloud to claim it is the original recipe, and forfeit the the rights back to the family who developed it. Because if true, they have cheated the public for over 40 years. As I said before, these statements are only my opinion and what I judged to be going on.

Not as reliably good as before company made changes

I ordered this once before in Nov. '14, and was thrilled with this liquorice. I just received my 2nd order a few days ago and am very disappointed! Like other reviewers, mine sticks together in a stubborn lump and is sticky to the touch. It doesn't have as deep and rich a flavor as before AND I may be wrong but it doesn't look as black; more of a dark brown. My main complaint is that it is so soft that I can't actually chew it. It just sticks to my teeth and then flattens out in my mouth, sticking to the roof where I then just let it dissolve on its own. This is very different than before where it had more of a soft gumdrop texture which was perfect..I notice that some other reviewers think it's changed as well (and not in a good way).I've written the company to ask if it's changed in the last year, and will update this review with their response once I hear back. Until then, I remain puzzled because it's not a subtle difference.UPDATE: I contacted the company and w/re to changes, they said: "There was no change in the recipe but the process was slightly modified to make a better eating product over the whole shelf life as it was getting hard towards the end."They also asked me for the production codes on the batch I had, and sent a few replacement bags. The replacements are good! Just as I remembered. So the batch I reviewed above is definitely defective. (See photos.) I gave them that feedback and they assured me they are "closely looking into this matter".So ... Given it's defective, I'm doing an exchange with Bolo. Will update again when I get the replacement batch. Fingers crossed!FINAL UPDATE: (I updated once already but edited review has not shown up. Arg. So this will be shorter.) I received my replacement from Bolo and its quality is somewhere between the defective and the good that the company had sent me. My conclusion is that the quality is not as good as it used to be before the company made changes. I also don't know that I can rely on getting a good batch if/when I order again. Upgrading from 3 to 4 stars because this is better than the defective batch, but not as good as it used to be. (Hope this edit makes it in!)

A raving review, with a disclaimer.....

Okay, I`m addicted, so take that into count! I just finished my third order of this delicious liquorice. I was a bit disappointed in this last batch. The flavor was the same, but the liquorice was very slimy and messy. Perhaps it was a fresher batch. I did come up with a solution. Cut the liquorice into 1/4" pieces and leave the bag open for a day or so.I just learned from my R.N. sister that liquorice can deplete your potassium. To remedy that, limit your consumption and take a few days off. Do a search and you will the maximum daily amount that you should eat. One of these bags surpasses that amount. Not that I eat a bag a day......clearing throat. But, I have taken vitamins for decades and it includes potassium.A disclaimer: This part may be gross and it probably is. I have been disabled since 1994, thanks to a drunk driver. Even worse, I loved my job. Anyway, I suffer from daily severe to excruitiating pain. The medicines I take will cause me not to poop. There, I said it. When I eat this liquorice, I have normal B.M.s. And no medication, for constipation, ever did the job. So, this treat can't be all bad!
