5.0 out of 5 stars A Small but Mighty Workhorse: How Mandolin Slicer Simplified My Home Cooking for Years
As someone who loves to cook and experiment with new recipes at home, this Japanese Mandolin has quickly become one of my favourite kitchen tools.I particularly enjoy using it to slice cabbage for coleslaw, as it produces consistently thin slices that make for a an amazing texture. The compact size of the slicer also makes it easy to store in my already-crowded kitchen drawers. What really stands out to me about the Benriner BN-1 is how sharp and precise the blades are. Even after many years of use, the slicer still slices through vegetables with ease, making food prep a breeze. And when it comes to cleaning, it's as simple as running it under water and wiping it down.Aside from vegetable prep, I've also used this slicer to make thinly sliced potatoes for homemade chips, which turned out perfectly every time.Overall, the this Mandolin Slicer is a versatile and reliable tool that has made my time in the kitchen more efficient and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality mandolin slicer that is easy to use and clean.Oh, and I almost forgot to mention about fermenting cabbage! As someone who enjoys making my own sauerkraut at home, this slicer has been a game-changer.The even and consistent slices that it can produces make it much easier to pack the cabbage tightly into a jar, which is essential for creating the right conditions for fermentation. And because the blades are so sharp, it takes far less effort to slice through the cabbage than it would with a knife, which is a real time-saver. Must-have tool for anyone looking to make their own sauerkraut, kimchi, or other fermented vegetables at home. Overall, I can't recommend this Mandolin Slicer enough. It's a compact, versatile, and high-quality tool that has made my time in the kitchen more enjoyable and efficient. From coleslaw to fermenting cabbage, this slicer does it all, and it's held up remarkably well over the years.
5.0 out of 5 stars Professional equipment at bargain cost
If you've ever Googled mandolins in anticipation of buying one, the Berlinger will almost always be mentioned. What they don't mention is the cost differential related to other products reviewed. The Berlinger is Japanese made and has been around for quite a while. No fancy bits, just pure functionality. If you watch many cooking shows, you will notice that the professional chefs are using the Berlinger more than almost any other brand. The beauty is that it is pure simplicity and function. The most appealing design feature to me was the ability to resharpen the blade which is held in place by a couple of screws to the plastic platform. Adjustment is simple with a single thumb screw determining platform height and slice thickness. Granted there are no "scales" to measure thickness, but one slice and a slight adjustment is all that is necessary. Included are 3 supplemental blades for further subdividing food into sticks, julienne cuts, etc. They are easily positioned and held in place with thumb screws. After my first use of this product, my "V" slicer went immediately into the trash. The food holder is of marginal value, but a slice resistant glove or simply paying attention to detail makes it almost vestigial. Probably one of the best kitchen purchases I have made in several years.
5.0 out of 5 stars If you are going to buy just one thing for your kitchen, buy this.
I bought this because I just wanted an easier way of slicing vegetables easily and evenly. Now I use it for everything - jobs that used to take ten-fifteen minutes are done, quite literally, in two. It is, in my opinion, probably THE most useful item that I've ever bought for the kitchen, after knives and pans.Take, for example, making a curry base with five finely chopped onions - that would take me fifteen minutes to peel the onions, chop lengthways, rotate and then chop sideways, and even then the results would not be even. It now takes me longer to peel an onion than it does to slice it into fine, even pieces with the mandolin. What I particularly like about the Benriner is that it is so easy to wash and keep in good condition. Sure, you can buy more complex and probably safer mandolins, but would you ever actually USE them knowing what a faff it is going to be to take it apart and clean it? Probably not.- the simplicity of the Benriner design means that there is very little that requires cleaning, and washing takes a minute at most. I have to admit, I was initially sceptical of the use of a polymer body compared to stainless steel, but it's an excellent quality and grade of polymer and perfect for the job - I wouldn't bother to pay extra for stainless now.In terms of safety, the safety 'handle' is probably too small for some people (my wife doesn't like it), so I don't tend to use it very much. I sliced my finger tip once as a result, but have now got the hang of it, and can gauge slicing things so that I now do it safely. If necessary, I still use the handle, but not that often.I've had this for a few months now, and the blade is as sharp as ever. I'm sure it will need sharpening or replacing at some point, but I can't see that being necessary for quite a while.
Sharp
I wonder how I did without this gadget for so long. It is great for slicing anything quickly and efficiently. It is very very sharp and of good quality with extra blades for different vegetable effects while slicing. This mandolin is used often for salad prep and meat slicing for sandwiches. If you are comfortable around a mandolin this is the one you want. I did the research and this one kept coming up.
Spectacular!
This is my third mandoline, the MOST REASONABLY PRICED and totally the best. Sharp, easy to use and cuts potatoes paper thin!

Sharp and Fast Cutting
Super sharp and fast cutting. Be very careful. Use the attachment to fix the vegetables, especially towards the end. You will need to look up a few videos on YouTube to learn to use it properly.
