5.0 out of 5 stars Good but patience
If you go to a barber a proper shave takes a bit if time. The look and feel of the razor is very robust.Tbh I was very disappointed with my first shave, there was stubble left over. But ivd kind of learned how to do it pretty good.I use Gillette fusion gel which feels good and makes it easier to shave.I do 3 shaves. The first one I do a quick shave all over to get the worst of the stubble down on the face and up on the neck. This is where the real shave begins. I thinly reapply the gel and shave up on my face and left to right on my neck. I then do one last one I go across on my face and at a 45 degree angle on my neck. You can hear the hairs being cut. You have to get used to how your stubble grows as I'm sure everyone is different. It takes practice but worth it. After my face feels very smooth with no rash at all and I'd say it's quite difficult to cut yourself, i havent once yet.I have sensitive skin and no rash at all, my stubble isnt very course just average I'd say.I then rinse my face and dry and then use simple moisturiser from tescos to finish off it's good stuff and spreads well.I also use feather bladesFeel good after.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy and great start to DE shaving
Update: firstly i am 19 and listen to alot of urban music, old skool hip hop and rock just to show that the stereo type of only older men using this type of razor is not true and there's a good reasion for this. Now ive had my first DE shave without any nicks as well which i am pretty proud of de shaving wins in every aspect of Cartridge vs DE Shaving some may say Cartridge will provide a faster shave maybe by a few minute or so but is it worth it for ingrown hairs which take longer to get rid of than the time saved and razor burn and a not as close a shave and expensive blades that is a rhetorical question. On to the razor itself i paired this with some turkish Derby extra blades (100 pack for £7.25 bargain)which worked a treat to take of a 1 & 1/2 weeks worth of scraggy beard growth honestly i looked like a hobo for the past week or so i am glad it was at my house 4 days earlier than expected and in time for new years. The merkur is a very well made razor and when you pick it up you will know that for £26.80 you have made a good investment as over the years and by years i mean many it will serve you with a baby smooth shave you do get a merkur blade but i didnt use this as i will be using my derbys over the next year anyway. if your thinking about a great first DE Razor then i can say the merkur 34c or a edwin Jagger de89 (very good so ive been told) would be a perfect start with derby extra blades, Osma alum bloc, and a nice badger hair brush with some taylor of old bond street Sandal wood shaving cream is a great start and the first cost of all this may sound pricey for just a shave but in the long run you will save alot of money the 100 pack of derby blades will last a year even if you shave every day as i know i could get 3-4 shave out of each without losing that baby smooth shave.Hope this helps anyone looking to save money and gain a better and closer shaving experience.
5.0 out of 5 stars Small, Heavy, Well Designed and Well Made
I'm new to DE shaving and have been using this for two weeks. Before I've been using whatever the latest and greatest is from Gillette, and was getting annoyed by the seemingly relentless increase in the cost of the cartridges. This razor is a very high-quality product indeed. I was surprised at how small and heavy it is compared with say a G Fusion. The handle is about half the length and the razor weighs two or three times as much. Both the size and weight are desirable characteristics. They seem to encourage you to avoid applying too much pressure to your skin that will lead to nicks when you are learning how to use it.If you want to dabble with DE shaving then be prepared to invest some time before you get results anywhere near a modern cartridge razor. I've had to watch a lot of YouTube videos and read quite a lot before being able to replicate the smoothness of my normal shave without feeling like my face was on fire afterwards. For me, the keys to success are making sure your beard is really soft before you start, the right creams, a nice soft brush, the correct technique, patience and, most important of all, finding which blade suits your razor and face best. For me, Feather razor blades (not available on Bolo at the time of writing) simply transformed my experience. Everything you read tells you that what works for one person might not be so good for another. The point I'm trying to make is that you will probably need to experiment, so don't be sucked into buying 100 blades of a particular brand.Back to the razor. You can't see it from the pictures, but the top piece has a long post that the base and handle screw on to. What Merkur refer to as a long screw mounting. There are pictures in the Merkur brochure that is available on-line. I like this because I was a bit nervous about handling DE razor blades knowing how sharp they are. The long post allows you to just drop one onto the top of the razor and gravity seems to get it into the right place automatically. So, provided you have an appetite for experimentation, some patience and are prepared to invest a bit in some kit then you won't be disappointed with DE shaving. I can't imagine going back to the cartridges again now. This razor is great and I'm pleased I bought it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Well made piece of kit
Definitely precision made. I'm using feather blades with this. On first use I was petrified of cutting myself, but after 6 goes, no nicks or cuts, and I'm pretty brutal with it. It's quite a change from using Gillette (who I wanted to leave due to plastics and being told what a terrible person I am for being born a man). I did find the Gillette easier, as could do in shower without soap or foam. It's a bit more hard work with this, but with a decent soap and blades I'm getting there, and saving the planet bit by bit.
5.0 out of 5 stars Quite good
Feel much more premium than other brands
This is the best starter DE razor
It’s taken awhile to buy a DE razor. Looking for a close shave. Also was recently concerned about the waste involved with disposable razors. I started with switching to soap and brush some time ago which was a great improvement. I also researched an unhealthy number of different razor brands. My usual method is to try a cheap model, then buy the better one later if I liked it. Two reasons I chose not to follow that process this time: First, if I bought a cheap one and cut up my face, I may not consider a quality upgrade. Second, after reading and watching tons of reviews, many of them would say “it’s almost as good as the 34C”. To save my face and to avoid buying a throwaway DE razor, I thought it best to buy the real thing.First Shave Impressions: Based on recommendations, I bought a sample pack of assorted razors which included a blade that was reviewed as a good starter blade. This way I can try a few brands without having 99 blades leftover. I also bought an Alum Block just in case I cut myself as well as a metal blade bank for blade disposal /recycling. Following my normal wet shave process, I noticed that the razor handle itself is much heavier and shorter than I’m used to. I’ve been told the shave angle makes a difference, so I’ll have to work on that. For today, I didn’t have to use the Alum Block! Shave was close. Happy with the first shave. I think I made a good decision. I’ll post an update after a few more blades are tested.
