The 4910 Tip Tinner is a lead-free mixture used for quickly cleaning, repairing, and maintaining solder iron tips. It is composed of SAC305 powder mixed with some thermally stable, oxide-reducing compounds that form a convenient tinning block. The re-tinning compound is suitable for both leaded and lead free applications.
During use, a soldering iron tip can lose its protective layer of tin leading to oxidization. Oxidized tips exhibit poor heat transfer characteristics and lose their ability to accept solder. This leads to bad joint formation and prematurely damages the soldering iron tip. To extend the soldering tip lifespan and decrease solder joint failures, any de-tinned tip should be re-tinned as needed. The 4910 Tip Tinner re-tins better than standard rosin-cored wires and results in a more robust, oxide protective tin layer.
The 4910 Tip Tinner also offers better cleaning than pads or wet sponges. Carbonized resin can be removed by simply wiping the soldering tip against the re-tinning compound without requiring heavy pressure or mechanical scrubbing.
To open the container: Remove the plastic wrap around the container. Use a small, pointed object like a screw driver to gently lift the lid straight up without using excess amount of force.

1. Bring the soldering iron to its standard operating temperature.
2. Roll or wipe the tip on the surface of the tip tinner. This should produce local melting.
3. Wipe tip on a wet sponge to remove potential post-tinning residues."

This works well - it very quickly resurrected a tip that refused to hold solder. Comes complete with 'Can You Open Me?' game - lol. I needed to use two mole grips to carefully open the tin, as a prize you get to tin your tips ;)

I was really prepared for battle reading the reviews stating people using a vice and mole grips to open the pot.Admittedly it was not possible with my bare hands but I ran my nail around the seam to find the biggest gap and then used a 2.5mm flat head screwdriver against the seam and pushed in and up. The lid popped right off and made a lovely noise too.The formula contains 96.5% tin 3% silver and 0.5% copper which I find to be preferable.

Really good stuff. If you are rubbish at soldering, have a crappy soldering iron, with an old tip: get this and a flux pen and you will be golden.

Did the job. Only three stars as it took about 30 minutes and some special tools to safely open the tin. It had been jammed shut and then sealed with clear tape. Managed it in the end without impaling my hand with the tools.

This does a perfect job of tinning the tip. Very easy and quick tin, just roll the tip over the surface as the iron reaches temperature, until you get a good tin. Easy and it lasts too.
