5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a Great toy. Great for art & crafts too. But can be tricky to use.
Bought the ‘Original’ Spirograph set for a child. Had so much fun I bought myself this Deluxe set and I’m not disappointed.I’m using it not as a toy but as a serious piece of art equipment to create designs and greetings cards. It’s particular effective when you colour your patterns in.The Deluxe edition comes with quite a few more rings and wheels to create hundreds more pattern combinations. It also has the addition of 4 shaped wheels. These give a totally different variety of geometric shapes. It’s worth it for that alone. The box it comes in is a fairly sturdy carry case and the pens supplied are OK, but I’ll be using a whole range of coloured gel pens that I bought separately. They work particularly well.Only 2 things to be aware of.The putty they supply to hold the rings in place is not good. I prefer to use the old method of pinning it to the paper. The rings still have the holes for that. All the pieces work together beautifully, but when picking a pattern with tight bends, it does take some dexterity to keep the pen moving smoothly and not jerking across your drawing. Particularly with the shaped wheels. All in all, brilliant!! And though some younger children may struggle with some of the patterns, it doesn’t matter. It’s fun anyway.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great present
Hours of fun for my grandson if he can get a look in as his mother also loves it!
4.0 out of 5 stars Nice set with good case.
This is great. Unlike some other reviewers I see no problem with the case that comes with this set -- the wheels all fit perfectly in mine with no warping at all, so this issue may have been addressed by the company. The case is designed to act as a kind of drawing pad, but I find this really cumbersome so don't make use of it. There is a very thorough guide with the set as well. My only issue with it is that the wheels keep slipping out as they're being used, but I'm sure this is down to technique rather than a product fault!
5.0 out of 5 stars tried and tested retro toy, a great set in a handy storage case
I loved this as a child and just bought it this year for my 5-year-old daughters Christmas. It is way more complex than I remembered, but a lot of fun. She is getting the hang of it slowly (as am I) I hope this will be a toy that keeps entertaining for many years. It is a great set, some sheets of good quality paper and 3 excellent pens are also included. the pens red, green and blue are just the right shape for the wheels (standard ball points are too large) and leave a sharp clear line with no bleeding or skipping. There is a good range of shapes and wheels in his set (some more challenging to use than other) and a guide book with deceptively simple instructions to very complex designs. It is blue tack now to hold the wheels in place instead of pins - I find you need use only a small amount or the wheel will not sit flush with the paper. The case is great. I was concerned at first because many reviews on here mention that the storage holes are too small for the wheels and lead to warping, but it appears that the manufacturer has now resolved this. all the parts fit well and would fall out of place if it were not for the plastic covers. there is storage for the pens and paper too and the velcro closure is secure and easy to use.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely item
Kids loved making patterns and really enjoyed it
3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original.
I bought a Spirograph because I had one for Christmas many years ago and I have fond memories of playing with it. However, this new version is notably different. For a start there's no pins to pin down the outer ring wheels to a cardboard base only "Spiro putty" which isn't nearly as good. Secondly, all the wheels, and rings etc., seem to be made from a different type of plastic to what they were 30-40 years ago; Why? The pens are different too. In early Spirographs you had four ballpoint pens; black, blue, purple and red. Now you get three felt-tip type pens, again why? I wouldn't mind betting that if the original Spirographs from the 70s were to be sold today far more would be sold than this version.
5.0 out of 5 stars ideal to relive childhood
Bought for my mum as she remembered using on in the 70's.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good set with carry case
This is a good Spirograph set with lots of bits of equipment which store nicely in the box which is a carry/tidy case. Very happy with it. It was purchased for my daughter who is 5.5 years old and is probably a bit young to use it. She likes it and the rings can be tacked down so you just concentrate on moving the wheel which is better than the sets I remember as a child where it all moved around. It would probably be better for a 7/8 year old as a bit more control is needed to do it independently. I had no problem using it and support my daughter in her use of it. Think it will get more use as she gets older and can better control the wheels herself.
