5.0 out of 5 stars • This trackball is absolutely excellent. • It is well built
AN ELEGANT, UNDERSTATED JAPANESE WARRIOR! DESIGN AND FUNCTIONALITY.• This trackball is absolutely excellent.• It is well built, although it is made out of plastic, the trackball feels robust and compact, offering a plenty of sensibility and feedback when navigating the internet of working on applications.• The design is perfect, its looks is the perfect blend between high tech and professional devise; it has an underlying sense of Japanese wisdom and efficiency.• Its matt black colour, is understated, never looks dirty nor attracts dust• It is very intuitive, all its buttons are well located and fitted. They need to be pressed hard in order to operate then, which means they are long lasting.• The track ball has the perfect size (although it looks small at first). I soon realised the ball has the perfect size as it fits perfectly well with the buttons located in its left and right hand side. Three fingers can work in complete harmony.• Functionality!!!!Every button is programmable, with at 46 different functions plus gestures; this is what makes this devise so special.• The wheel’s performance is like a plane control, smooth and precise.• Improvements:It needs a protecting bag/box to protects its buttonsThe back of the trackball needs more high in order to allowed the hand to be fully supportedon the devise.
4.0 out of 5 stars MS Trackball Explorer Replacement? Maybe..
First of all I'm writing this about the DEFT version of this trackball with the smallest of the 3 balls (M-DT2DRBK).I'm a time user of trackballs including the classic but sadly departed Microsoft Trackball Explorer 1.0 (I own 3), and the Logitech Trackman Marble FX (even rarer and more worshipped than the MTE).Is this an MTE replacement?Maybe.Overall build quality seems much better than the MTE. I've seen teardowns of the HUGE model, and if this model is similar, then build quality surpasses the MTE especially on the inside!Ergonomics wise.... the DEFT I find is not quite as comfortable as the MTE. The ball size (34mm) is noticeably smaller than the MTE (44mm). But for me at least the hand fit is very similar. This results in skittery accuracy for me.In terms of smoothness, those ruby bearings are just as good as the ceramic bearings I've fitted in my MTEs.(No nose grease was needed to get the ball spinning smoothly)Buttons feel is OK, perhaps a bit heavy. I'd prefer 2 buttons on the right like the MTE for backward & forward. Like others have said the 3 function buttons on the top are hard to get to, so use them for rarely used functions.I did try the HUGE size too. This too is built very well, but I found that for my hand size (22cm spread tip to tip from thumb to little finger) it was simply too big & so quickly became uncomfortable. The big ball (54mm) was nice though.Ideally I think I'd prefer the size of the Pro (44mm)...but as I write this, it's more than 3x the cost!!!!!The moral of the story is...if they fit your hand size the Elecom Trackballs are very good. If one size is wrong for you, do try another.I'll probably keep this one as a nice wireless ball, but so long as I can keep gluing them together again, it probably won't replace my MTEs full time.....
5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a good wireless, finger operate trackball.
I have tried several makes and models of finger-operated trackballs - I utterly reject the thumb-operated ones as unworkable. (Why do they dominate the market?)Every one of the other trackballs I have tried have their problems. Mostly they pack-up after a short amount of heavy use. This trackball is just the right size and has lots of programmable buttons, allowing reassignment of the primary button functions (the most common point of failure). This trackball gets everything about right! It is in constant use, and stands up to heavy wear. It accepts rechargeable batteries and gives plenty of warning when replacement will be needed,
3.0 out of 5 stars Bit too light, bit too fiddly, way too much static friction.
Gave this a few days to come round but the ball is on the small size, similar to that of the Logitech thumb-ball mice. Smaller ball than the Kensington orbit. Probably ok ergonomically if you have smaller hands, mine are larger and this caused me to have abit of an uncomfortable grip on the unit as a whole. The main problem for me was the ball is too small and fiddly for any delicate work, coupled by the static friction on the ruby bearings. Actually the ball flys about the place nice and freely for nipping about the desktop with ease but when it comes to fine work such as selecting text character by character or even fine movements in games there's way too much "stick" or static friction. I have other trackballs, both of the classic metal roller type and ruby bearings and I know people like kensington with the expert mouse and slimblade do a much better job smooth bearings with little static friction.I guess this is all reflected in the price, but even saying that - you can get the Elecom Huge for only a few pounds more which hopefully has better bearings. On the positive side, the buttons have a nice feel and there's no problem with the wireless function. All works well. Sadly for me, wasn't comfortable nor accurate for fine work. Sorry.
5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, very precise.
I've been using another brand of trackball for many years, but often the buttons weren't very responsive. So I decided to try another brand, and so far the Elecom has proven to be a very good replacement! The only problem I had was with the left button being flush with the mouse body (thumb doesn't always find it!). I stuck a small rubber pad to the button to raise its profile - problem solved! Perhaps a future model could have a raised left button similar to the function buttons?
5.0 out of 5 stars i have multiples of those (both cordless and corded) to last me long time
I have only been using these for years. ever since logitech stopped creating trackman i was at a loss. these have amazing programmable buttons, size perfect for my small hands, choice of wired and wireless models. i love them to bits.
Looking for the best trackball for small hands
So I went through quite a few before I settled on the Logitech Ergo options. I have small hands and it seems like a lot of the products out there are a tad bit too big. I found that this Elecom one has way too many buttons to be of full use to me. It also feels very plastic-y and light. I prefer a solid build, which is why I prefer the MX Ergo from Logitech. Elecom seems to have a good reputation though, so if you want lots of buttons and the novelty of the thumb-operated scroll wheel, by all means go for it. But you get what you pay for. Personally, this one just didn’t feel ergonomic for my hands.
Love it and buy it second time
First one works 5 years already, with changed left-button switch after first 3 years. And now I bought second for the office. Really like it more than deft pro, it's the most convenient trackball I ever used. Only thing is better to change bearings to the zirconia 2.5mm, or change the ball to the blue one from Logitech. Blue ball from logi works fine with stock 'rubin' bearings, and stock black ball works perfectly fine with zirconia bearings.
Good mouse in a harder to find format.
I had gotten used to finger operated trackball mice back starting with Microsoft's 'Trackball Explorer' years ago, It has been long since discontinued, and is typically unreasonably priced on the aftermarket. I had went on to use a Logitech 'Wireless Trackman Optical', again for years until it too was basically worn out, discontinued, and overpriced on the aftermarket. Not wanting to give up on the finger style of trackball that I've long become used to, I found this offering. It works very well, fits the hand comfortably, and has the added benefit over my previous old models of being a modern, high resolution product that tracks much faster across my modern high resolution monitors than the old trackball I replaced.
UPDATED. 2023.
All in all a great product. Size, feel, quality all on par or better when you consider price. I bought this one just to try it out and see if the company was legit. I can honestly say that i am more than sold on the company and the quality and i have no reservations about spending considerably more for one of their high end models. Im actually excited to see this company's high end features bells and whistles.. The only real issue with it is customizing the extra buttons. The software they provide is garbage. And to make matters worse, isnt even in English. You will have to find another software to customize the 6 7 8 buttons. This is the issue that keeps me from giving it 5 stars. But other than that, its terrific. Fast, accurate, comfortable. And at fair prices... i highly recommend.UPDATE: Its now 2023. Ill save u the details but I was asked to give my opinion on ergonomics as it relates to office workstations. I was given the opportunity to do some research on several companies including Logitech, Kensington, and Elecom. The funny part is no one on the team had even heard of Elecom before my recommendation. Comes to find out, they chose Elecom mice for every new workstation in the facility including the main dispatch center hub where they no doubt are going through a trial by fire. And not a single complaint has come up about the performance, and they were actually praised for their customization as dispatchers like to program their mice with their own shortcuts for maximum speed and efficiency during their shifts. So I must retract my initial review about their programming software and tell you that it's much improved. And that's not just from me. That's from a whole 911 dispatch center crew of over 30 dispatchers who have no skin in this race. I'll be honest I forgot about this initial review and never would have paid any attention to it if I had not given it a poor review initially. I stand corrected and concede that improvements are the new order of the day. So Elecom gets the 5th star. Oh, there is still 1 tiny issue... The product info is still written in Japanese so you have to go to the Elecom website to get it translated to English. Lol. Pound for pound.... And I can't believe I'm saying this... Better than Logitech and Kensington. Elecom quality and price is equal, if not better than the big guys , and they offer more innovative options to their products so u get more for your money. At the end of the day, Elecom is doing what any new guy should be doing., better product at better prices, and letting their performance do the talking. And again, Elecom doesn't even know I exist and they don't pay me a single dime to say any of this.... I just believe good quality products should get a little recognition every now and then .
