5.0 out of 5 stars A really great second/study/spare room amp.

I had a spare pair of 80s JVC bookshelf speakers kicking around and I figured that I could replace my PC speakers with something a little better sounding, but I didn't have the space to spare for a full size hi-fi amp. Having used boxes like this in the past in cars with good results, I thought I'd give this one a try, and boy does it exceed expectation. Sure, it's no match for a truly high-end amplifier in terms of connectivity and audio quality, but compared to most consumer audio equipment it punches well above its weight, figuratively and literally.First things first, it's small. Unexpectedly so - it's about a third of the size of similar products I've seen before, yet in terms of feature set outperforms them. Despite the small size, you've got proper banana plug connectors (with backup screw-down fittings if you just have bare speaker wire) which are far better than the lever-style connectors many full size amps even ten times the price come with. There's also a much more powerful presence to the output than anticipated. This thing isn't front of rock gig loud, but it's capable of driving my bookshelf speakers to the point of breakup, and there's a lot more bottom end than you'd get from a standalone Bluetooth speaker unit.In addition, it's also a nice looking and feeling unit! The case is a smooth, attractive aluminium shell and the buttons and hardware are well finished. The printing and labelling is good, and the layout well designed. Putting the AUX input on the front and the USB input on the back is a little design detail that really improves usability, and is something many similar amps lack. Compared to similar products I've used before, which felt more "functional", this is something I'm happy to have on show.Unlike many other amplifiers in this price band, it also has three independent inputs that can be actively switched between - a USB-driven sound card emulator of some kind, a standard 3.5mm (AUX) cable in, and a bluetooth connection. I have the PC input connected to my desktop, the cable input free for use with my radio or mp3 player, maybe my phone, and the bluetooth allows other devices to be connected too. As mentioned, this amplifier treats all inputs as independent, with the possibility of switching between them - this is a marked improvement over some similar competing products I've tried, where either the input signals are simply all blended, or one input mode takes absolute priority and disables the others when active. As an added bonus, despite the bargain price the unit ships with a whole host of accessories of good quality. In the box with the amp and power supply were three extra cables: an AUX cable, a USB cable, and, most surprisingly of all, a packaged AUX to RCA cable. The AUX cable is of a decent length and quality to start you off, though I'd replace it with a longer more durable one down the line. The USB cable allows the amplifier to be used as a USB audio device and it works well, although the length left something to be desired on this one when running from desk surface to a PC on the floor, but would be fine if it was being used with a laptop on a desk. The RCA cable was the biggest surprise, although it indicates just how confident the manufacturers are about the possibilities of using this amplifier for actual hi-fi use, and rightly so. Although not a "brand-name", the quality of this cable is good and it's an actual off-the-shelf product in its own packaging, not just a cheap bundle cable with cut corners.I'm yet to see how the amp stands up to long term use, but first impressions are that the build quality is more than adequate for this purpose - an occasional use medium-power amplifier. I'll probably update this review after six months with more accurate information about quality. The only downsides I've found are the slightly annoying mode select voice, and the power supply. The voice, although helpful is somewhat grating on the ear - it's a very robotic female voice announcing the current input channel, and the duration and intonation of these announcements is just a bit off to my ear. I'd have much preferred a language-neutral chime system. The power supply is good, but it's only half power so restricts the output from the amplifier to below what it is actually capable of. Mine also displayed some rather unpleasant coil-whine at first, which has quietened down but is still audible in a silent room. Not a dealbreaker, replacement power supplies are easy to come by, and the supplied one is more than fit for purpose, but a shame that it wasn't perfect out of the box.My parting thought is that I have another set of old speakers lying around as well, and another one of these hooked up to those speakers would make a great "extra" in my spare room for guests to use. I could see it being really popular in a holiday let for the same purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for passive bookshelf speakers to stream via Bluetooth.

I have got pair old Microloab Solo bookshelf active speakers. To stream music from on-line services (Spotify mostly) I had tried some cheapo Bluetooth adapter but I did not like the result - the sound was dull, so I needed a amplifier with Bluetooth to get more details. This little gem fit the bill perfectly. At first there was a noise issue with active speakers (internal amp interference). To resolve it I had converted speakers to passive : just open the speaker cabinet and cut wire from internal amp to crossover and connected the wire to Nobsound. It is easy to connect wires rather than RCA connectors. The result was quite good - the noise is gone. The amp itself has slightly noticeable white noise but only if you place your ear directly near speaker when no music playing but it is acceptable for the price. The moderate sound volume on the mobile is about 70% and about 60% on the amp works just fine in the average size room. I would recommend it for passive bookshelf speakers (find a good used pair on online auction). I would not recommend it for active speakers so and it is not suitable for audiophiles. This budget D class amp is not as smooth as proper expensive amp). But streaming from smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth is hardly an Hi End experience, it is rather convenient and quite reasonably good sound (I can hear details).

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact & powerful, but not for audiophiles! Poor bluetooth range.

I bought this and the previous model (with the large volume dial on top) as I was intrigued about the different form factors, and needed two small amps anyway. For the price and compact size, I'm blown away by its capabilities.I tried it out with the supplied 12V power adaptor, as well as a 24V power adaptor - both work great, but I didn't notice a significant jump in max volume.I also tried it with 5 different speakers:1. Vision LU-206 outdoor/waterproof speakers rated at 80W at 8 ohms - impressively loud, even from several feet away.2. Gale Rock Monitor, 80W at 8 ohms - fine - not very loud, but fine for near-field listening.3. Mission 731, 75W at 8 ohms - works fine, but not that loud.4. Acoustic Solutions Powerforce 1000 rated 120W (190W max) at 8 ohms - it works but not particularly loud.5. My car speakers (bypassing the broken radio!) - sounds really good but not enough bass (I'm not EDM bass-junky!) - so I'll probably add a low-profile, under-seat sub-woofer.The bluetooth range is pretty poor - so don't get this if you intend to stream from a bluetooth source further away than several feet or without line of sight. It's fine for the one I've got in the car, and since I'm desk-bound when working that works well, unless I get up to make a cuppa, whereupon it disconnects. It does auto-reconnect when I return so it's not a big problem.Build quality is good - a metal housing, and reasonably good terminals on the back. The on-off and mode buttons look like they wouldn't take too much abuse, and the volume control feels plasticky and cheap. (I prefer the larger top-mounted volume control on the previous model)Sound quality is acceptable rather than good. Audiophiles will be disappointed and should avoid, but nobody is expecting top quality audio from something this cheap and small - it's all about convenience. In summary - it's compact, fairly powerful but not for audiophiles, or those expecting normal bluetooth performance/range.
