5.0 out of 5 stars The hidden gem in the Noctua range, NH-D15 performance in a smaller package.
I am running an AMD Ryzen 5800X and had the massive Noctua NH-D15S for a while and while it is an exceptional cooler it's absolutely massive (I was only able to have one fan installed on it otherwise it would have blocked the GPU fan below (see picture).I was on the verge of ordering an AIO water cooler but by accident I stumbled upon the NH-U12A, initially thinking that it's yet another standard single tower cooler and would be a noticeable step down in performance due to its smaller size.Noctua claims on the box that this cooler offers 140mm performance in a smaller 120mm package and naturally I was sceptical of this sort of claim, but it turns out it's completely true! You can tell Noctua has thrown all their engineering and technology behind this to enable it to perform like it's bigger brother and they've achieved this by adding an additional heatpipe (7 compared to the 6 found on the NH-D15) as well as including two of their brand new NF-A12x25 fans in a push-pull configuration. The supplied NF-A12x25 PWM fans are a game changer compared to anything I've tried before - the blades use a new material that allows them to extend the blades so there is practically no gap between them and the housing which increases the static pressure to help force air through heatsinks (and radiators). A new bearing/hub allows it to wind up all the way to 2000RPM at a noise level that you have to actually experience yourself to believe. You could easily have these running 1500-1800RPM and be as quiet or quieter than other fans running just 1000-1200. I believe this fan would outperform even 140mm fans for airflow and static pressure. As with all Noctua coolers, the supplied mounting kit for AMD and Intel processors is really easy to install and provides a secure mount. One particular highlight is the screws that screw the heatsink down to the mounting platform have a spring and a 'hard stop' to ensure you get the perfect mounting pressure with no risk of overtightening (once the screw stops turning it's done). It's also supplied with Noctua's excellent NT-H1 thermal paste and a handy screwdriver.I ran the Cinebench R23 multicore benchmark with my existing NH-D15S and got a maximum temperature of 81-82C (room temperature 24C) and then installed the NF-U12A and ran the same benchmark and got the SAME temperatures and same benchmark score. So if you think the NH-D15 is too big or just won't fit in your case, don't hesitate to consider this instead, you really don't have to compromise!PROS:1. Same performance as the massive NH-D15S2. Compact footprint and is horizontally offset to stay clear of the memory3. Typical Noctua quality4. Simple to install AMD/Intel mounting kits provided (including Screwdriver!). Very secure fitting5. 7 Heatpipes6. Supplied with the incredible new NF-A12x25 fans7. Excellent airflow through the heatsink due to the fans8. Supplied with a tube of the excellent NT-H1 thermal paste9. Supplied with 2 different speed adapters (if you can't use PWM)CONS:1. More expensive than the NH-D15 (although consider the fans cost £25+ individually!), although in my opinion you get what you pay for.
5.0 out of 5 stars It's a great cooler, a good size that doesn't hide your ram and it's almost completely silent.
After about a year of use, I'm impressed. It is far superior than the stock cooler my CPU came with. It's almost silent, it looks decent (albeit the fans being brown, more on that later!)Now, I haven't overclocked my CPU, I got this cooler because it looks more premium than the stock AMD cooler I had before, I also read up on how good noctua coolers are, but this cooler is nice and cold and whisper quiet. I have changed the curve in the bios on mine so it constantly runs at 60% until it hits higher temperatures, which it never does lol.I was going to go for the d15, A, because I was looking at the chromax (that black looks gorgeous) and B, because it was generally reviewed as the best cooler for its price. Then I saw what a monster that beauty really is and noticed that I either didn't have the clearance over my ram, or I would have had to squeeze the panel back on. Neither seemed appealing, so I started looking at the u12a and liking what I saw, close results on a cooler with 2 of noctuas newest, probably best 120mm fans (again, albeit they're brown!) Yet the cooler is tiny in comparison! I'm so glad I chose this one. Now, onto the brown, even though the brown has never bothered me, just recently I've been thinking how it doesn't fit in with the rest of my build. I was going to spray my fan casings, as all of the videos I watched made it look pretty easy, but I haven't got the patience, so I opted for the anti vibration rubbers, 1 pack of white and 1 black (you get enough for 2 fans!), and they made such a difference. I'm just going to wait until they release the heatsink cover for this cooler and finally release the chromax version of the fans! Then my little noctua cooler will be complete! You also get a little tube of thermal paste, but you only have to use a fraction so you have some for the future too!
5.0 out of 5 stars Never disappointed by Noctua
Quality. Best air cooling solutions.
5.0 out of 5 stars great cooler
easy to install, quiet and keeps temperatures low.
5.0 out of 5 stars This might be magic
This cooler might be magic. I've used a lot of coolers over the years, and very few are actually impressive. This one is. At low fan rpms with low static pressure fans, this seems to cool better than the DH15 despite being much, much smaller. It cools my 3950X (16-core) easily with Silent Wings 3 fans at 800-900rpm, absolutely incredible. It cools better than the U14S, which I find amazing. The performance is literally on par with a Liquid Freezer II 240mm AIO. I much prefer air where possible.Installation is super easy thanks to the standard Noctua mounting mechanism. The documentation is straightforward and the packaging easy to access. The included accessories are always welcome. Noctua always do a fantastic job with their bundles, packaging and installation.Update:I had originally mentioned Silent Wings 3 fans working better with regards to noise. Having played with the fan curves a lot, I can report that the Noctua fans are just as quiet with some effort put into fan control. Better yet, the Noctua fans are fantastic at getting air through the cooler so they're more efficient at similar rpms. This heatsink really is astonishing. I've got another running on a Ryzen 5900X (12-core) now and it works just as well there as it does with the 3950X (16-core). Can't recommend this heatsink enough!
4.0 out of 5 stars Terrible installation, Amazing temps
This is the biggest pain in the ass to install. if you don't put a ton of pressure on the screw when you screw it in you will round off the end of the screw. I had this exact problem. had to get an electric screwdriver and very carefully I had to screw it in while putting my body weight on the screw. I am shocked I didn't break the motherboard. But, The thermal performance is amazing. I have a Ryzen 7 3800x and at full load, I get sub 50C (no OC). It is also so quiet.Overall, if you are patient and confident at building PC's this is a great cooler. It is quiet, cool, and to my eyes, it looks excellent.
very quiet, very good
Keeps my 7600x running really well and very silent. Great for ryzen 7000 CPUs as they run hot no matter what you do.
Passt perfekt - tolles Set
