5.0 out of 5 stars Good compressors

Used these on my Tesla to change over the springs. Well made, did the job and didn't slip when compressing the springs. Felt much safer than my old spring compressors without the pins. Highly recommended.

Excellent does job with extra safety a must if changing springs

4.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and mostly safe.

Compressing a coilspring badly can kill you as it releases, which is why you should try and keep it pointing away from you. This is one of the safer clamps which is why I bought it. Can slide along the springs a little - so you want to make sure the clamps are 180 degrees. It comes with a device to do this - but I never found the rig supplied to do this usable, and used the clamps without it. Did the job a number of times (don't buy cheap chinese coil springs - buy a brand!) - when I bought a branded coil spring and thus finally got it all working I had compressed and uncompressed coil springs for days with a impact driver with few issues with this tool. It is very easy to use with a impact wrench or driver and socket to tighen or untighten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lower-cost but effective. Fits XC90 fronts. More suited to larger springs than double-hook types

    A.C. · 21 March 2023

To set context, I am not a professional mechanic nor fitter. However I class my DIY skills appropriate to moderately challenging projects, including in this case the replacement of the front shock absorbers of my first generation Volvo XC90.The XC90 is a fairly sizeable SUV and the size and strength of its coil springs reflect that. I'd already decided that there was no way I would trust a single pair of compressors on such a spring. By using two pairs (four in total), the load on each individual thread is reduced by ~50% but as importantly, it gives some safety redundancy - if one compressor breaks or lets go, theoretically there will be three still holding it, not one. I suspect that a single compressor would let go shortly thereafter, or at the same time.Going for safety-based redundancy, I also bought each pair from a different manufacturer, to avoid systematic issues (e.g. if one vendor used sub-standard steel/threads causing a failure, the other won't necessarily have the same problem.)That context leads me up to the point of my review - I'm in a position to compare the relative effectiveness and suitability of two types of compressor on 'big' springs; this one, and the 'double-hook' type. For the latter, I had purchased Laser model 2779 on the recommendation of another Volvo owner (at the time of writing, nearly twice the cost of Katsu). Firstly, whilst the double-hook type appears to have an added safety advantage, I found that in practice this wasn't the case. The twin hooks of those type of clamp follow a radius and if that radius doesn't coincide well enough with that of the spring you're trying to use them with, the fit can be compromised. There is no such problem with the single hook types, like the Katsu. I purchased the Katsu tool because originally I'd decided to pair the Laser twin-hook with another twin-hook from Sealy (AK3841) and the hooks of the later were shaped such that they simply didn't fit the spring.Having now used the Katsu in conjunction with the Laser to replace two shock absorbers:1) I note how more robust the Katsu seemed to be and hence how much more confidence I had in them. The Laser compressors showed a tendency for both the clasps and the central thread to flex and bend under load, whilst the Katsu appeared to remain unaffected. I finished the job with more confidence in the Katsu tool than the Laser.2) The locking pins on the Katsu require modification to be used with larger springs - I had to grind a small flat on the head of the pins, where they are flared out to a button end, to get them to pass over the spring. However, I consider that a trivial modification and not one that would effect the strength or safety aspects. Quite the contrary, I wouldn't want to use them *without* the locking pins engaged.3) Having compressed two large SUV springs, I'd seek to avoid doing so again. I really didn't enjoy this aspect of the job. Seriously consider whether this is something you want to do yourself, or might be better left to a local garage. If anything were to go wrong, the potential for damage to self and property shouldn't be underestimated.4) There is no way I would have wanted to have done this job with the safety margin of using two sets of compressors, regardless of which type or manufacturer.5) Neither the Katsu, nor any of the other tools I've mentioned, are really suitable for daily professional use. All show some signs of wear / thread degradation after just two uses. I'd be ok with using them perhaps a half dozen times before replacing them but maybe I'm being too conservative.
