5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic first lens for compact full frame setup- will you ever need another lens?
Bought this for my new ZV-E1 after a lot of research. I am coming from a Nikon Z30, so wanted a compact setup. For reference the ZV-E1 is actually very slightly smaller than a Z30.This lens is therefore in my opinion THE first lens to buy if one of your primary drivers is a compact setup and you are buying say a ZV-E1, or the new A7Cii. There’s other cheaper options such as the Samyang 18mm which is slightly wider, but I’ll come onto why I went with this. The lens is tiny. I have the 24/F1.7 new small Nikon APSC lens for my Z30 (which is really a 36/25.5 in full frame) and the lenses are almost exactly the same size. That means this is tiny. It is about 5mm longer than the Nikon APSC lens, but this has an aperture ring on it, that doesn’t. It is clickable on and off, great for anyone who likes shooting aperture priority like me.The lens is an ideal focal length for the first full frame Nikon lens. This is because it’s just about wide enough for Vlogging even with Dynamic Active stabilisation on. Yes an 18mm would be slightly better for that but I bought this as an all rounder, and it’s wide enough. It is also a superb out and about lens for video and photos. This size does everything- the Vlogging it’s just wide enough, the architecture, inside shots, landscapes, people. Of course a prime to do everything has compromises, but remember on the new Sony cameras you have the astonishing clear image zoom making this lens also zoom to 36mm.The lens is also fast enough. With the flexible ISO on my camera, this can film clear footage in the dark.So why did I go with this over a cheaper non Sony alternative?Well there’s the image quality which is extremely nice. But also Sony lenses work better with Sony in body stabilisation. And given my main priority is top quality footage out and about and travelling in a small package, I have neither the time or inclination to be regularly setting up my gimbal. One of the main reasons I got the ZV E1 was the brilliant stabilisation. So I want the best outcome with that, which means a Sony lens. It’s also very nicely built and I particularly like having an aperture ring this one being either clickable or non clickable. Very nice. Also Sony lenses have more ability for in camera correction, such as focus breathing on this one.So the lens is maybe £100-£200 overpriced like most Sony stuff but really for my use case this lens is an unbeatable first lens and I am wondering if I’ll actually ever need another (although the 16-35 powerzoom would be nice, it’s very expensive!)
5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning lens with one feature worth the money - it weighs almost nothing
When choosing a lens weight is not usually a factor. Quality, value for money, how much light it lets in etc are usually the most important features to look for. This lens has all those, it's super sharp, well made, lets in lots of light ( f2.5 is more than needed on moderm high ISO digital cameras ) and it's not expense when compared to Gmaster lenses. I own many f1.4 gmaster lenses and they are all brilliant but when looking to take a camera with a Gmaster lens on it out for the day the problem that immediately becomes obvious is the total weight. So to have quality is a ridiculously light weight lens is heaven. I have it running on my new ( as at may 2023 ) Sony zv e1 and together it is dream come true. A stunning small full frame camera with a stunning small lens - small with no compromises. If you are looking for a Cinematic look in video this will do it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic little prime!
I happened to catch a great deal on this lens, it was Like New from Bolo Warehouse for 394 with original box and I didn't hesitate. Glad I checked on Bolo first as I definitely would have missed it. Saved me at least £50-70 on used prices. It turned up quick and the condition was better than expected, not a mark on it, could pass as new.It functions pretty fast and has the aperture ring which is a nice touch for quick adjustment with tactile feel. The size of the lens is perfect for a walk around lens and images look plenty sharp, bokeh is lovely even for a f2.5. It is exactly what I was looking for to replace the 35mm 1.8 FE (which is a superb lens but heavier). Only gripe is doesn't focus as close as the lens I am replacing it with which is a trade off I'm okay with.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great and compact
Bought this to have a compact lens and it does what I need. I have this paired with an A7 III and it's so much lighter than if I had a Tamron 28-75 G2 attached. I can mostly shoot with just one hand. I also use the APS-C/Super 35 Mode to get a 60mm range.Image quality is great and sharp, just what you'd expect with a G lens. I read some comments where people were saying this is pretty much a GM lens, but I don't have any knowledge of that. The 40mm focal range is so natural and I'm glad I went with it over the 35mm.My main dislike is the lens hood, and I wish it was the more traditional one like the one the 24mm version has.
4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely lens but not really sharp enough for 61mpx
The size of this lens is really lovely but the performance on high megapixel bodies like the A7R4/5 is a bit lacking. It has brilliant resolution in the middle but sharpness falls of quickly leaving the edges somewhat lacking. Stopping down has little effect. The 20mm 1.8 is much better though you lose the size advantage of this 24mm. Depending on what you are photographing edge sharpness is not necessarily a problem at all - if you don't need perfect sharpness across the frame or you are on lower mpx body for example. Its size makes for a perfect discreet lens for travel and for many that will be more than worth a bit of a drop in sharpness. It's certainly nice to have in your kit but personally I'd only buy on a very good offer or used. Optically the 40mm and 50mm in this set of small lenses seem much better.
5.0 out of 5 stars Compact and high quality - great street/walkaround lens
I was looking for a light and relatively compact prime to use as an everyday lens on my Sony A7IV. I’d tried the nifty fifty but wasn’t too happy with the build or the image quality until stopped down to f4, and the focus performance wasn’t the best. I’d also tried the 35mm GM but it is still quite some weight and size. This 40mm might not have the f/1.4 aperture but it ticks all of the other boxes and I quite like the tighter framing. I think it works well as a compromise between 35mm and 50mm and has the strengths of both. The build is good. It feels solid but without the weight and bulk of the 35 and 50 GM lenses. I pair it with the 24mm GM which is a great lens for low light shooting and Astro.I’d recommend this highly for daytime street photography
Tan bueno como dicen
este es un lente tam bueno como dicen los montones de reviews que hay
Me encantanto!
Nitido già a tutta apertura, leggerissimo, compatto.
Totalmente recomendado. Excelente esta serie compacta de objetivos SONY.
